Good summary of proceedings here:
https://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/577167/afl-announces-shortened-season
  • The AFL season will be reduced to 17 matches, with all teams playing each other once.
  • The first four rounds of the season would remain as fixtured (regardless of when they are played), but the rest of the 13 rounds would be "recalibrated".

  • The potential of shortening game time provided greater flexibility to play multiple games in an "accelerated" period. It could include playing multiple matches in the space of a week.

  • Games with no spectators would allow flexibility for broadcasters to play matches on non-traditional football days including Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • The four-week finals series structure would continue as planned – with no date locked in.

  • The fixture for the rest of the NAB AFL Women's competition remained unconfirmed.

  • State league competitions and talent programs would be put on hold until May31 in an attempt to limit the outbreak due to their "part-time" nature.

  • A decision on the ability for AFL clubs to add players from state league competitions to a supplementary list would be finalised next week.

  • AFL Commission Chairman Richard Goyder will chair a cabinet of club presidents to assist and lead the industry. It will be finalised on Tuesday.

  • The League has every intention to play the Grand Final at the MCG. The first scheduled cricket match of the summer falls on October 25 with a Twenty20 World Cup match between New Zealand and West Indies.

  • The AFL executive was working closely with AFL clubs on their finances to ensure clubs were able to work their way through this challenge.

  • McLachlan confirmed that he too would take a pay cut.

It's just a game. There will still be an end of season and they can declare a winner at that point. Whoever adapts the best wins. Whether they can justify the $50k or they can manage the software with a changing fixture is another question. The biggest problem would be if games from different rounds overlap because player prices are based on a total fixed pool of money after each round.
In the grand scheme of things I think they could just relax the fixed pool constraint. No one is checking anyway!

While I appreciate most here probably don't know the definitive answer, can we assume round 1 games are played under normal conditions? ie full length games and any adjustments will be made to the second block of games should we make it that far?

Yeah, I think that'll almost certainly be the case. It was not definitive at all in Gil's presser, he just said that the AFL wanted to keep that option open to ensure it could play the 17 game season.

So with the hypothetical shortened games would this give the inflated scores we used to get in the preseason round robin games?

Trying to spit out 3300 points in less time. Was this a tangible thing? (from memory they there were larger squads too).

I’m thinking mores 150’s for players always in the action (maybe games considered closer for longer relative to % game time) and more 20’s rather 50’s for KPP not effecting scoreboard.
