Most other codes have come to a halt so I find it bemusing that the AFL has yet to decide about whether or not RD 1 going ahead with only 48 hours left.
I mean the NBL has been called off in the midst of their finals. If any code has a rationale to continue, it's the NBL.
How much more information could they possibly be waiting on to make a decision?

I can't help but feel the AFL what to sneak in round 1 if they can, to get at least 9 games ticked off.
You're correct @Philzsay, they are desperate to get Round 1 in. What happens after that is anyones guess, but they are hell bent on this first round being played. Which will be horror for us SCers if there's a big delay between Round 1 and Round 2.

Yeah, reading between the lines, the AFL is desperately talking to everyone possible. Trying to get someone to agree with them, that they are good to go, and play Round 1. Everyone is telling them
NO!!!!
So they keep delaying the inevitable. It would seem even if they start Round 1, they might be lucky to complete it, let alone move onto Round 2.
Conversely, they are waiting to be told by the government, that they can't play, so they can go to all their partners and say "Well, we wanted to play, and did everything we could!".

With every passing headline surely the chances of the AFL deciding to go ahead with the season are fading fast.

The NRL is copping flack on multiple fronts over wanting to play on (and demanding handouts in the process) and sporting leagues all over the world are calling a halt to proceedings, so I can't see Gill possibly wanting any of that sort of publicity in the twilight of his tenure as AFL boss.

Desperate to appease their media deal, and betting partners. They are going to have to suffer losses, just like all the clubs that enable them to earn their revenue.

Interesting that the US has banned gatherings of more than 10 people. Under a similar scenario there is no chance the afl commence round 1. How many people do you reckon would be necessary for an afl game to go ahead?

Might be naive, just seems to me that all parties are trying to buy time until another party blinks and the decision is taken out of their hands.
The players, who were all about a reduction in the number of games, are now all about the 22 and want to ensure they receive the best possible remuneration. Hard to reconcile.

Does Dangerfield want to play Geelong in the 18th game?
