I don't see what the issue is tbh with Hird getting paid by Essendon.
Surely it's Essendon's money and how they choose to spend is none of anyone's business.

A bit stupid that we're still paying Hird though I thought. Seems pretty clear cut that he can't be paid so expect us to cop some more punishment from the AFL soon.

AFL moves to overhaul complex match review panel and tribunal system
REFERRING to matches rather than demerit points when deciding penalties is part of a proposal to overhaul the AFL tribunal system.
And rectifying the distortion caused by carry-over points and bad record loadings is another priority to fix the often contentious guidelines.
Club football managers and list managers are being called to a meeting at the AFL tomorrow to be briefed on the possible alterations to the nine-year-old table of offences, based on demerit points, that replaced the old tribunal panel.
Led by football operations manager Mark Evans, the AFL team has worked on experimental models in the off-season in a bid to simplify the system and deliver more equitable results.
The working group, along with representatives of the AFL Players Association, have used videos of incidents that drew charges and penalties this year to test new models.
The vision provided the chance to gauge the impact and compare outcomes under the proposed models.
Definitions within the conduct category was a focus, with more clarity of what's a negligent and reckless act.
One proposal is for an infringement that draws a free kick to be negligent, while reckless must be an act that's strongly discouraged by the players.
Evans sought feedback from each club two months ago on six key elements of his predecessor Adrian Anderson's tribunal system in time for the AFL to trial changes that could be implemented for the 2014 season.
No definitive model will be presented to the managers at tomorrow's meeting, instead the league will run through what has been tested and the outcomes before seeking input from the clubs again.
Appointments for the match review panel, under chairman Mark Fraser, and the tribunal, under chairman David Jones, are yet to be discussed.
Possible rule changes, such as the roles of runners, training and medical staff on match days, will also be discussed as not every club attended the summit on the Gold Coast the day prior to the AFL national draft.
The AFL working party still has two months before the start of the NAB Challenge to refine a revamped tribunal model and rule changes.
