I brought McGrath in as a budget mid 3 weeks ago for scores of 67, 124 and 89. Although this is very underwhelming, I can see that both of his poor scores were 'almost games.' His numbers were still good, with just DE% and FA numbers letting him down.

RD 7:

24 disposals at just 50% DE

RD 8:

25 disposals (12 CPs), 10 tackles, 8 clearances

60% DE

RD 9:

25 disposals (12 contested) at 72% DE

6 clangers including 3 frees against (one 50 metres).

I will add that as a bombers fan, I never thought I would see Pidge in my team as a MID only, especially not in 2020. I just need him to clean up his game a bit and he could go 110 from here on. Is that too much to ask?

What's the go with Gaff? Is it simply that he can't handle a tag?

What must he do to recapture early season scoring?

@Lost In The Sky do you have any insights legend?
Plays a highly uncontested style so is heavily dependent on amassing a large amount of the ball and disposing of it efficiently. Shorter quarters makes it more difficult for him to hover around the 30 disposal average he has maintained since 2015.

This is true but 20% less game time means that 20% less disposals should equate to the same supercoach score as long as he is efficient. If he was getting 30, then he is coming close to the -20% equivalent of 24 - currently averaging 23.3 in 2020.

Prefer the contested types due to possessing more facets to limit their poor scores.

Eg- Can still score well from a low possession game if they are pushed forward and register a goal or accumulate a lot of tackles.

Also doesn’t possess a high ceiling in comparison to the other players available around the same price range.

I think I am trying to talk myself into a POD that I can watch on the tele in an hours time. Classic move. You are right, and there is enough reasons to stay away.

Wet in Perth today, not good for his uncontested game relying on good ball use. Will probably cop the Curnow tag also. Upcoming:

Hawthorn - Impey?
GWS - De Boer
WBD
Richmond
Essendon
St. Kilda - Steele
North Melbourne - McDonald

Yeah Gaff really doesn't like the hard tag (Like a lot of guys) but as Connoisseur said his game is heavily outside. He's a pure winger.

Last year he was playing more inside at time but Kelly coming in has pushed him back out again.

As an Eagles fan, I love his role, He owns that wing, and his defensive running is also very good. He's an endurance beast and he is always one of the first back to help the defenders out and then he charges through the ground to deliver it in the forward 50. He's simply elite at his position and what he does.

From a SC perspective, he's one I would stay away from. There is a reason a lot of opposition teams decide to hard tag him over a Kelly or Shuey or a Yeo. They don't want to be hurt by him running around and doing as he pleasesOther inside mids when getting hard tagged still have a good chance to get some contessed possessions and clearances... Gaff when copping the hard tag doesn't have that benefit so the possessions dry up and his SC score suffers.

I'd much prefer a punt on Shuey, though he's not as durable as Gaff.

Thanks so much for that response. Very helpful! Is Shuey and Yeo in one SC midfield too much?

Gaff looked like rolled gold early in the year.

Tags do impact him. It has caused some of his poor scores.

The last score against Geelong concerning as he didn't get the attention. Tim Kelly had a run with player from memory (being an exCats the reason I expect, same as when Ross Lyons tag Neale when he went to Brisbane).

I think with Sheed on another wing and Tim Kelly giving better run, it may have had an impact on Gaff. Early in the year Sheed was forward and Brander was on the wing.

At his point I don't think so, WCE have had their bye, Both Shuey & Yeo are contested explosive players so can score well, If you are looking for a great value pick this week with a little risk... Shuey is fantastic value at that price.

West Coast is playing well, is at home for a bit longer so good scores should still come for them.

If you don't want to pay big dollars for your mids, Shuey is worth a punt.

Personally, I've gone the other way and I'm trying to get as many of these uber premiums as I can over value picks, In this season things are different and thoses top guys are regularly getting 150-200 scores. So will see how that goes for me, lol

As with most years, I will be scraping the barrell to finish my midfield. I should be able to afford two mids in that 500-550k range in the coming weeks. Don’t have Macrae, Oliver or Jelly but don’t see how I can afford even one. Do have Neale and Titch.

Looking at “fallen” prems who have already had their bye. Options are Parker, Merrett, Gaff, Yeo, Telly, Taranto.

Front runners for me actually are Parker and Yeo!

Nice. I know you aren't asking us to rank them but I want to because it looks fun.

Merrett, Taranto, Parker, Yeo, Telly, Gaff.

That being said, Yeo is in my team and Merrett is not in my plans as I have Ridley, BZT, McGrath, Hibberd, Draper and Kev so far.

Thanks for the rankings! I’m raising these thoughts early as I will be looking to commit in R13 and R14 to two mids.

Zerrett could hook me in with another good performance, he’s been so up and down this year after losing his position as a CB mid. But then again he’s still averaging 106 so I probably should look at him more closely.

Taranto definitely an interesting one... probably has the most upside, I’ll continue to monitor more closely.

Feels I should consider Merrett and Taranto a bit more closely after seeing you rate them one and two

Zerrett can really get a hold of a game and go nuts. Not goliath but big ceiling which is what you want for byes.

I have looked a bit at Taranto myself. If you ignore his return game he has since gone 111 and 126 from 18 and 21 disposals respectively. He had 32 disposals against us, just lucky he went at 50% DE and had 5 clangers as it kept his score down (92) and his price.

Given there are more best 18 rounds to come I would prioritise Macrae and Oliver. Maybe even Jack Steele. Unless your betting against them with the risk of falling further behind. At least plan for them to be in your team. Oliver asap as he doesn't have a bye and Macrae with a slingshot after his bye (hopefully it's early). If the players you mention don't get you to these three then you should try and generate more cash rather than finish your team. Maybe Sier or Serong if you're worried about on ground scoring or just another basement price cash cow.

Interesting points you have raised. I was thinking of prioritizing 22 prem scorers so I’m not so blown away when other premiums are missing in bye rounds. There will be at least two 4+ team byes to come, probably don’t have the luxury to sideswap everyone out (will only have 4 trades after completing my side). Players will be rested too in the condensed schedule (likely from Ess/Dees who won’t have a bye). Not so sure I can always hit 18 premos playing in a round with only a pool of 21 premos.

I have Danger and Bont as options potentially to swap around their byes, so it’s not as though Jelly, Macrae and Oliver types are completely out of my plans.

I’m hoping I can find a Treloar post bye 2019 type. I paid about 510k for him post byes last year and he became a very important player, averaging ~125 on the run home. Hoping I can find someone with some positive reversions (and Macrae and Oliver types can go back to scoring in that 110 range!)

Didn't realise how few trades you would have left. Instead of 2 trades to bring in a cheaper mid next round, what if you use the same 2 trades to bring in Sier and then Oliver in a few weeks? Or if you can put a decent M8 on the ground just bring in a basement priced cash cow and wait a few weeks for Oliver. I like Bont and Danger to Macrae at some point.
I just think those best 18 rounds are really going to separate teams that have the best players. Also the first two league finals might be best 18.

Yeah I have given Sier some thought but he did throw in a 50 odd as well first up so don’t think he’s much of an upgrade on a Wicks/Schoenberg type.

I think I’m gonna back myself to find a better value pick in that low 500k range who can hopefully go 105-110. I doubt Oliver continues at a 120-125 avg and expect he probably comes down closer to 110. Also potentially has a De Boer tag to come.

Interesting suggestions though given the best 18 landscape!

He had B2B 100% TOG games which I think took alot out of him before this short turnaround games started aswell. The game just gone he actually had a rest and owned the last quarter was 49 at 3QTR time and ended up 96. Also noticed 90% of the time Sheed has a big game Gaff is used less.
