The $1 million he recieves this year, instead of getting paid in 2014 takes the form of a "bonus" for his work in 2013.
Hird (and his wife) made it quite clear, they will be paid for 2014. This is the only way Essndon could do it, and the AFL can laughingly say "well, he didn't recieve any money in 2014!". It's a joke, and not fooling anyone. It's just an attempt to take the egg of AD's face. He should know better than to say "I thought it was understood", and not get it in writing. It's a good thing he has plans to step down sometime in the not too distant future!
