Good evening and welcome to the 2020 SuperCoach Scores Ultimate League Rising Star Awards ceremony. Tonight, we will be recognising and celebrating some of the best young talent in the competition, as we look back on their feats and achievements during the inaugural SCSUL season.

For a player to be eligible for this award they must be on their 1st Contract, 22 Years or Younger and have played 10 AFL Games or Less.

The ten-member voting panel is made up of the coaches from all SCSUL clubs, with each member casting their votes of 5,4,3,2,1 for who they believe to be deserving of the Rising Star honour. The judging panel were to consider a range of different factors including season average, position, games played, and the players importance to their respective SCSUL side when casting their votes.

Below is a summary of the 18 Rising Star Nominations across the 2020 SCSUL home and away season.

SAM DRAPER
Goodie’s Giants FC
RUC
Pick 12 (Round 2) Open Draft

14 Votes

The 21 year-old big man was the first real surprise selection in the Open Draft, with plenty of eyebrows raised amongst the other teams recruiting departments when The Giants pounced at the twelfth selection. Draper suffered an ACL injury in the early stages of the 2019 season when he was on the cusp of AFL selection, and eventually made his AFL debut in Round 9 2020. He has since formed a fantastic RUC partnership with Giants skipper Brodie Grundy, averaging 83 points per game, with a highest score of 122.

NOAH ANDERSON
Goodie’s Giants FC
MID
Pick 3 2019 Draft Class

25 Votes

For many keen SCSUL observers, Anderson slipping to Pick 3 in the 2019 Draft Class was quite a surprise, with most expecting him to be drafted immediately after his best mate Matt Rowell. After playing much of the year out on the wing, in recent weeks Anderson has moved into the on-ball rotation and taken his game to another level. Having played every game and averaged a really solid 69 throughout the SCSUL home and away season, Anderson has produced efforts of 116 and 90 in The Giants two finals fixtures.

IZAK RANKINE
Roppongian Rangers
FWD
Pick 7 2018 Draft Class

27 Votes

Rankine’s debut was one of the most anticipated in recent history and boy did he deliver, after a string of injuries hampered his 2019 and (the early stages of) 2020 seasons. Rankine produced back-to-back hundreds in his first two games, and quickly established himself as a key member of the Roppongian Rangers forward line. Rankine is a scary prospect for opposition coaches to deal with and will only improve on his SCSUL average of 73 the more games he plays at the level.

MATT ROWELL
Roppongian Rangers
MID

Pick 1 2019 Draft Class

28 Votes

A devastating shoulder injury was the only thing that could stop Rowell from putting together one of the most remarkable debut seasons ever witnessed. With an 80 on debut, Rowell then went on to score 171, 141 and 114 for an average of 127 before a Round 5 cut his season short. Rowell has secured himself a spot in The Rangers starting midfield going forward, a prospect that will excite Ranger fans.

CALEB SERONG
Jordan's Jets FC
MID
Pick 9 2019 Draft Class

41 Votes

The Gippsland Power product, via Geelong Grammar, has put together a wonderful season and is fully deserving of the 2020 SCSUL Rising Star Award. Nominated for his Round 7 performance of 118, Serong has often been compared to SCSUL superstar Lachie Neale. The strong-bodied 178cm midfielder has been able to combine the role of stopping the oppositions stars with finding his own football. He has averaged 77 across the SCSUL home and away season, and delivered scores of 94 and 78 in The Jets two finals thus far, having quickly established himself as a key member of Jordan’s midfield rotation.

That rounds out the 2020 SCSUL Rising Star Ceremony, be sure to join us for the Brownlow Medal Count and the announcement of the Bay Villas Resort SCS All-Ultimate Team over the next few nights.

It is with great pleasure we tonight announce the 2020 Bay Villas Resort All-Ultimate Team. Congratulations to all players selected in the very first representative side in league history, it is a huge honour and one which each and every player should be proud of. The guernsey and blazer is just reward for these players exceptional efforts across the 18 home and away fixtures, and we wish those who are lucky enough to be playing in the Grand Final this weekend all the very best.

Brilliant. Love the field setup but one small change is necessary.

A Brayshaw is incorrectly listed as a Darkness player when he is still contracted to Creme.

Unfortunately due to space I just listed current team, had enough trouble finding where to fit the two RUCs in :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Grand Final Preview
After one of the craziest periods of fantasy football imaginable, with tight schedules, rolling team selections, the madness of the festival of fantasy, in-season trading of multi-million dollar contract players, mid-season coach appointments and lockdown 2.0, most importantly, the inaugural SCSUL |01 premiership comes down to a tussle between the formidable Giants and the mighty Jets!

Despite securing several brand name bona fide superstars, the Giants got off to a rocky start this year and this showed in the head to head battles between the Giants and the Jets in the early H&A games, where the Giants just lacked that edge to conquer the Jets. But after some shrewd trading decisions by Coach Tim to bring in some more experienced players with the aim of giving the SCSUL |01 premiership a real tilt, the Giants have found themselves with a formidable side on paper and are the favourites to win the SCSUL |01 Grand Final.

The Jets on the other hand have already had a taste of success, taking out the minor premiership and a cool $30 prize, as well as Coach Jordan being named the 2020 All-Ultimate Coach! But the pressure and heat is on, with some footy experts commenting that in recent years the minor premiership is more a curse than a sign of true success. The Jets have clearly been the most consistent side all season, even throughout the Festival of Fantasy period, but will they be able to match it with the Giant's brand name superstars when it matters most?

Selection headaches?
  • The Giants may be sweating on their F6 spot with young GWS Giant Riccardi potentially putting pressure on fellow Giant Himmelberg's spot in the side. At a minimum, Giants will need Rowbottom to earn a recall if Thor cops the wrath of the hammer.
  • The Jets are fairly well covered on all lines except the rucks and will hope both their Port rucks get up for the battle against Grundy. Mr Worldwide may be waiting in wings if needed but some say he has used the hub to prepare for a career as a DJ rather than working on his ruckcraft. It’ll be a dilemma for Coach Jordan to address in the o***eason.
Key Matchups
  • The Midfield Battle: Oliver/Cripps/T.Mitchell/Taranto/Whitfield v Dunkley/Duncan/Adams/Shiel/Walsh. On paper, the Giants' midfield look far too strong with a core group of elite superstars but the Jets could win this battle if some indifferent form of the Giant's superstar mids continues.
  • The Ruck Battle: Tom Bellchambers officially passed on the mantle to young Draper and the Giants will be hoping that Draper will bring his A game against one of the toughest ruck opponents imaginable #FearTheBeard. His partner in crime Grundy faces off symbolically against the Jet's dual ruck combo of Ladhams (aka the C19 protocol breaking party animal) and Lycett (aka the 70's porno moustache). Can they double team Captain Grundy? Or will Grundy revert to his usual approach of punishing opposition rucks late season?
  • Rising Star Battle: It was the Jet's Serong who took out the inaugural SCSUL Rising Star award earlier this week ahead of the Giant's Anderson (who finished in 4th place), but who will step up when it matters most? The Jet's will be hoping Serong can continue his stellar form in his first season to help contain the Giants star midfield
  • The Lynches: Like the rucks, the Tom Lynches also symbolically go head to head this round with each coach hoping that it is their Lynch who kicks a bag this round. I have no idea who owns which Lynch from the above predicted line ups, but may the best Lynch win and may the loser be lynched!
Prediction: The Giants to get it done by 85 pts and reap the reward of some skillful in-season trading.

All the best of luck to @Goodie's Guns and @Jordan's Jets and huge thanks to @KLo30 for all the behind the scenes work all season!

Exceptional write up @Bomber18 ! Looking forward to what should be a great contest.

The Giants have a match committee meeting this morning to discuss some possible selection dilemmas.

If we are being honest, absolutely sh*tting ourselves about the GWS team selections, can cover one out with Rowbottom likely (surely?) back, but fearing two. One of which could be a $1.25M donut...

In The Mix: Who’s Pushing for Selection in the Grand Final?

Who's knocking on the selectors' door? Who's coming back from injury? And who's under the pump?

WHO IS a chance to play in SCSUL Grand Final?

In this week's In the Mix, brought to you by Bay Villas Resort Port Douglas, we find the players who are giving their selectors plenty of food for thought.

Who's going out, who's sore, who is under the pump? Our reporters attempt to pick all the Grand Final ins and outs. Check it out.

In The Mix.png

After securing their place in the Grand Final with a Semi-Final victory over The Jets, coach Goodman has had an extra week to prepare his players for the biggest game of their lives. Last week The Giants held an intra club contest, with many of the players barely raising a sweat, well that's at least what they'll be telling themselves after some horrendous scores were dished up, we're looking at you the midfield group. Youngster James Rowbottom was managed while Tom Lynch (hamstring) made a very successful return, key forward Harry Himmelberg struggled, and his indifferent form in recent weeks could well see him in the firing line. The Giants match committee will be pleasantly surprised with the good form of young defenders Riley Bonner, Lachlan Sholl and Damon Greaves. With Will Day a lock, it appears these three players will be battling it out for the final spot in the back six, where Greaves appears to have the upper-hand at this stage which would make for a Marlion Pickett-like Grand Final debut. With James Worpel (AC joint) in for surgery, expect Noah Anderson to be recalled to the lineup after missing the semi-final. Hard-nosed midfielder Luke Dunstan (pectoral muscle) returned after a long injury layoff, and it remains to be seen if he is a chance to feature for The Giants. A massive selection call looms over out of form, well-paid midfielder, Tim Taranto, who despite a couple of solid outings, has been largely disappointing since his return from injury.

Verdict: Three changes from the side that defeated The Jets in the semi-final, a Grand Final debut for Damon Greaves who replaces the extremely unlucky Lachlan Sholl. Noah Anderson slots into the midfield for the injured James Worpel, and Tom Lynch returns from injury to replace the out-of-form Harry Himmelberg. The bolter could be Luke Dunstan if ticked off by the medicos. - Marc McGowan

Great work Tim for preparing this! I’m glad the league were able to work out a sponsor too!

Steele and Lyons may be worthy of some higher salaries after their All-Ultimate performances in 2020, but the Rangers are very happy to have locked them away whilst they will remain at their peak for handy salaries :)

Will also hope some of the Rangers rising stars in Rankine and Rowell can join the prestigious All-Ultimate team sooner rather than later! Maybe Rivers too!
