Right, finally had a chance to have a decent look at the current squads and done some scouting... Immediate first thoughts:
* Scoring changes probably disadvantage anchor openers (Hughes types) and perhaps also Chris Green / Rashid type allrounders (unless the top order really has folded above them). Part time bowlers also get the shaft (Renshaw/Cooper) if they don't make three overs. Specialists seem to be be favoured, although of course if somebody can genuinely contribute in both roles they are at an absolute premium. Considering that, and the draw, Dan Christian is my first picked this year.
* Since the last three rounds are all no-DGR no-bye rounds, the tendency is probably more towards trying to make a "complete" team by round 11, and therefore cash generation is probably more important than previous years. So I'm looking a lot at cut-price options with a clear role - and unfortunately a lot of the internationals are overpriced compared to last year (remember being able to get Morris for 125k?). And there's also the old English batsmen problem to consider - a lot of the young stars coming over this year are new to the T20 circuit and how they will perform in Australia is a big unknown. It took Hales, what, four seasons to get it right?

So here's where I've landed so far:
WKP: Dunk / Philippe
BAT: Stoinis, Maxwell, Jacks, Clarke, Khawaja / Harris, Turner
BWL: D Short, Zampa, Milne, Christian, A Agar / Wildermuth, Noor

I don't really like the Dunk pick but whatever we all know we're gonna have 15 more iterations before the first match. Turner and Harris in particular are dependent on them actually getting picked, I think Turner is more likely in the early games the way their squad is. Pity Pucovski doesn't look like an option!

The problem, of course, is having no Adelaide players and only 2 Hobart, so maxing out at 5 DGW for round 2. Adelaide in particular are a real problem, the core of their side is all 140k+ (aside from Worrall, who I don't really rate in this format) so to bring any of them in for round 1 donuts would need to be more of a structural change than I'd like. Hobart have the continual issue of what does their order look like - McDermott would otherwise be an appealing option.

Obviously this far out I'm not too bedded into anything but as usual I like the interplay of ideas that goes on here in the early stages. I just have to know which calls to back myself on over the potential for groupthink!

Thanks for the reply ....

- Have had Nabi and DC both in my side when I did my initial draft but their respective DGR rounds means that I can probably bring them in later ....
Isn't their less rounds with DGWs this season so it doesn't matter too much. If Christian has a good role at that price I'm not skipping him

I guess you could look at it two ways:

- Ignore when the DGR games occur and go straight for value ... if so I'd have DC in but also think he is more of an end of comp performer (like say Dusty in AFL terms)
- Use the early DGR rounds and wait to see where value appears ...

TBH I don't have a real answer but early points lost are hard to make up fanasy wise .... so it's always going to be a gamble as usual ...

I just wanted to see who the most popular players were. The following team has 15/16 of the highest owned players so far. I couldn’t fit the 13th highest owned player, Henriques, under the salary cap, so the 25th highest owned player, Sangha, replaces him to fit the cap. Must say, it doesn’t look like the team I thought it would!!

wow no D'Arcy Short

nice side though
He’s priced so high that I would be prepared to fade him ex DGRs. Stoinis can be captain and is likely to bowl more than last year.

I know Short just keeps scoring runs, but I do struggle with the idea that he can be so much better than other batsmen on a consistent basis.

If he bowls he’s much more appealing, and that could go either way by the looks of things.

You are very bullish on DC , I thought he looked past it last season to be honest.

Different team , different scenery.

Abbott , Bird & Curran missing though certainly places more importance on him though.

Can't really see him batting higher than 5 or 6 though.

If they get King Carlos though his role might change again (think he is playing LPL)
I am at his price. He has averaged 50+ in the other seasons we have data on, and I recall him as having a history of 60s.

He did look terrible at times last year, but Finch didn’t seem to want to use him in his best role. He did better when he was captain.

He was also playing in another T20 league recently (CPL?) and was scoring very well if I recall correctly.

Well he did average about the same as Khawaja, Handscomb, Maddison, Worrall and McDermott ... all of which I've see posted in quite a few teams
Fair point

Khawaja offers tremendous value

Think Handscomb/McDermott with the DGR in Round 2 is appealing , plus spending big elsewhere need a cheaper WK option.

Maddinson would have been in my team if he wasn't in the Australian A Squad

Worrall with 2 DGR.

I guess it is the DGR v SGR approach.

Like I posted before with Abbott , Bird & Curran missing early he does become a bit more appealing with the ball , Henriques out as well.

Could all depend on their OS signing tomorrow and if they get a short term replacement for Curran.

Lots of viable starting options , hard to fit them all in.

The thing I find with Short is he just looks so comfortable at the crease and still plays "normal" cricket shots , similar to Khawaja or S Marsh , but knows he can change gears at anytime

Even if Wade is on , he is happy to play the anchor role.

Not sure whether he benefits or not from the change of scoring with no boundary bonus and the difference in SR.

CA has instructed him to bowl more , so I am sure that has been passed on to the Hurricanes.

Stoinis certainly is "under priced" given he will be bowling again.
