Mattner is now an assistant coach at the Swans and Laidler is said to be his on-field replacement so a lot of hopes on Laidler.

This is what came to mind as well which has me hopeful he might be able to start at D5/6 in my team. Looks like we'll be rolling the dice with the other defender rookies so he's as good as any option.

I can't believe I haven't at least seen Shannon Hurn's name been thrown around.

Touted as playing more midfield under Simpson, in the leadership group and also suggested as a possible replacement for skipper Darren Glass once he retires in 2014 or steps down.

Take out the sub affected game where he got injured early and he averaged 92, but is priced at 85.

An easy draw for the Eagles, coupled with a fit and firing Hurn who we all know is more damaging in SC than Dreamteam he must surely be a watch if not a near lock for a POD D3-4 position (even at this early stage)

Hadn't heard the midfield talk myself. If that's the case he's a great option as his lack of possessions has generally been the only thing stopping him from taking his average to the next level. From what I've seen of him, not sure how successful a midfielder he'll be lol.

Also with Johnson and R.Shaw on the comeback trail, Laidler will be given every opportunity to mesh with the team.
Could make us coaches some cash and then upgrade him somewhere down the track.

Been locked for a while, because of their early draw (like you mentioned), he's underpriced (thanks to the 8) and is very consistent.

He did well for me last year... until his 8 in round 13. He's under close consideration again.

there are good and bad things that can come from new coaches . . . if shannon hurn can get midfield time each game, let the points flow

West Coast did struggle in the midfield last year through injuries, form, and retirements.
wouldn't hurt to give a more experienced hand a go in the midfield.

To be honest i dont think Hurn could run in the middle. Will always be a half back Flank with a great kick

I dunno, I think you might be surprised with his running capacity.
I'm not saying he's a bona fide midfielder, just runs through the middle during general play and sneaking up to HF for a long goal or two

Yeah, I'm not sure this is anyhing new for Hurn.

He definatly will not be a permenant midfielder, but he has in the past had a bit of a licence to run through the midfield and go forward, as he is such a good kick of the footy.

Cheers mate. Definitely does improve his scoring potential even if it is just stints in the midfield.

Putting the last couple of seasons aside (poor coaching, low team morale & losing almost every game) I can see Roos giving him a lot of freedom to boost his confidence. Given he is awkwardly priced, all I can see is upside?

Hey Nate,

As a Melbourne man, I started Watts last year and it only lead to heart break.

Although, with Roos now on board, he might be worth a punt, I think that it is now or never for Jack.

Last year was last year, so I would stongly recommend watching him closely in the P/S and making an assessment then.

The defence is frustrating me a little.
Personally I'm not interested in spending 572K for McVeigh, Bartel or Walker. The only two defenders that are 100% locks in my side are Mitchell and K.Simpson. I've been spending a bit of time looking through the 'Rate My Team' thread and majority of the backlines have had (apart from Mitchell and Simpson) McVeigh, Bartel and risky selections like Seedsman, Grimes and Swallow.

Seeing as Mitchell and Simpson both have the Round 9 bye, does anyone have any other ideas that aren't too risky or overpriced and fit my structure for around 500K?

P.S. The top 6-8 defenders IMO by the end of the year will be Mitchell, McVeigh, Bartel, Hanley, Hibberd (unsure), Simpson, Murphy and Shaw. I am considering Hanley, although his very tough draw is making it difficult.
