Allan Border said in the current circumstances he would ask Matthew Wade if he was comfortable opening the batting, allowing Cameron Green to make his debut in the middle order if he is passed fit after suffering a concussion on day one of the day-night tour match.

Fox Cricket expert Shane Warne came to the same conclusion, pairing Wade with Harris at the top and naming Shaun Marsh as the back-up option should Green be ruled out.

“Burns looks horribly out of form,” Warne tweeted.

Shane Warne’s first Test XI: Matthew Wade, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Tim Paine (c, wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

Mark Waugh suggested opening with Paine
Open the batting to go with being the captain & wicket keeper - way too much.

I much prefer the Wade option opening.
I've also been suggesting to my mates opening with Paine for the last week or so.

Let's be honest, if he gets through the first hour or so, taking the shine off the new ball he's done his job to then a least give Marnus and Smudge a touch of protection before coming in. Wade is a heck of a lot more likely to do some sort of damage in the middle order than Painey, and Painey is potentially less likely to nick one early against the new rock than Wade? Obviously we are dealing with hypotheticals all round here, so it's all guesstimates. But if Painey is getting through the new rock and then checking out, provided we are batting the best part of a day or so, I'm not sure opening, keeping and captaining will be too much of an issue for one test (likely).

Test Averages

Burns 38.31
Harris 24.06
Labuschagne 63.43
Smith 62.84
Head 41.96
Wade 31.30

Harris with scores of 35 , 25* , 26 & 5 isn't compelling to me.

Averaged 36.86 v India in his debut series with 2 x 50's.

If Wade does agree (if asked) to open and fails has he then forfeited his middle order spot moving forward?
That's the big concern to me , fails in 1-2 Tests as a opener and Green (if fit) succeeds , Wade's Test career is finished.

I guess if he fails at 5/6 anyway in the first 2 Tests then Green would be a big chance to come in for Sydney.

That's true, but at least if he fails at 5-6 it's not because he has been coerced into a less friendly role for him and that sits better with me.

Play two specialist openers is my preference even if at least one of them is purely a stop gap measure as taking someone out of their usual position can have flow on effects.

Even if Marnus opens it is not where he has become entrenched and while failure as an openenr would not IMO see him dropped there still could be a flow on effect on his confidence when he returns to his usual batting position.

I would go back to Harris and just pick the next best aggregate runs scorer so far this season among regular openers (haven't researched not sure who), who knows could find an unexpected diamond.

Some people thrive when the pressure is turned up.

Alternatively go back to an older more fringe player like SOS for example who would know they are a stop gap but also hopefully have the maturity to handle that and also be able to use it is an opportunity to add some cream to their career.

Totally agree.

If Wade does open (don't think he has ever opened in first class cricket) and fails , they have certainly thrown him under the bus.

I was keen on them selecting both Green & Pucovski and fitting them both in , but if that's the case would have them preferred to then drop Wade.

I was big on them adding Khawaja to the Squad as soon as Warner was ruled out , and would have added SOS as well , can't understand why they added Henriques over anyone of them to be honest.

I don't think Harris (or Bancroft) is good enough at this level.

The only name I just came across based on Shield form would have been Whiteman.

I don't like the idea of moving Marnus from 3 (although appreciate he could face the second ball of any Innings) then moving Smudge from 4.

Couldn't imagine Head at 3.

Can't even imagine how Burns must be feeling.

I suggested Paine as a opener a week or so ago , think his technique is a lot better than Wade's , win the toss and bat first I would prefer he opened.

Getting excited for Thursday

Allrounder Cameron Green will make his Test debut in the opening Vodafone Series match at Adelaide Oval starting Thursday provided he overcomes the mild concussion he suffered last week.

Australia men's team coach Justin Langer today confirmed the 21-year-old, who has been in stunning form with the bat so far this summer, will earn his Baggy Green Cap if given the all-clear by team medical staff in coming days.

Green was diagnosed with mild concussion last Friday after being struck in the head while bowling, a savage blow from India tail-ender Jasprit Bumrah bursting through the hands of the Western Australia before he could take evasive action.

Green will train with the Australia squad at Adelaide Oval later today and tomorrow, and if he passes the required tests to show he has made a full recovery he will take his place for the day-night match on Thursday afternoon.

"If he's passed fit he'll definitely play," Langer said in a media conference today.

"We're just going through the concussion protocols.

"We all saw, it was a very unusual incident that happened with him.

"If Cameron gets through the protocols and he gets through training and he feels good, I've seen him last night, he had a big smile on his face, he had another test this morning that we got good news.

"He's a terrific young bloke, he's obviously an excellent talent, he's earned the right for selection through his performances through Sheffield Shield cricket.

"If he's fit and available then he'll make his Test debut, which is very, very exciting for Australian cricket, for him and his family."

Green is currently restricted to bowling spells of up to four overs, a couple of times per day as he continues his rehabilitation from stress fractures in his back that saw him unable to bowl for most of the past year.

However, his batting form has been elite as he posted a career-high 197 in the opening rounds of the Marsh Sheffield Shield in Adelaide earlier this summer, and an unbeaten century against the Indians in a three-day tour match at Drummoyne Oval last week.

At 21 years 196 days (on Thursday) he will be Australia's youngest Test player since Matthew Renshaw (20 years 241 days) made his maiden appearance at the same venue against South Africa in 2016.
