I have a flat $0 remaining team too. Whilst there are definitely some weaknesses, the fact I can spend on Phillips, Powell, Perkins and Robertson keep bringing me back to it.

My riskier picks are McDonald, Docherty, Cripps and Heeney - and I've put a limitation on myself to not pick players who are or will be 30+ during the course of the season, mainly to avoid the niggling issues with ageing - but that means I can't touch Dusty or Danger (although both of those are the most likely to tempt me to break my restriction).

The players I think I'm missing (aside from those two), are Whitfield in defence and Walsh as midfield breakout contender. I have considered switching Macrae to Walsh, and that's definitely an option. But the issue for me with changing Docherty/McDonald or Heeney is both getting the extra $$$ to spend, which would potentially cut into the rookie budget, or structure, because aside from Heeney who I believe will average low 90s and is priced at 84, the forward line has basically nothing reliable unless you spend $90k more, and for reasons above I don't want players like Dusty.

McDonald and Docherty are both risky too, McDonald with a new coach, maybe a change in role and gamestyle, not to mention the fact that he has about 10 games of premium scoring history. But his upside is massive too - averaged about 118 in his role in 2020. I don't think he'll get anywhere near that but if he averages 100 it would be a fine pick.

As for Docherty, so much has changed at the blues since he dominated, there's a lot of mystery as to how he'll go in 2021 especially with off-season surgeries and recoveries. I don't blame people for not picking him after his decline in 2020 after an excellent start - but there might be an opportunity to get a great POD if he does fire and everyone else is scared off by his 2020 scoring. I can't say for sure either way - he's really a gut pick without perfect logic to back it up.

But picking those risky players does allow me to both fit the potentially overpriced and uberpriced premiums in, whilst also allowing me to pick up a few expensive rookies to supplement my cheapies. 1611369161758.png

Not sure if you guys have seen Tom Powell but he looks very skinny, needs a few preseasons in the gym. His junior numbers are outstanding however I have real doubts that his body is AFL ready - North guys on here might be able to add more on this.
Will Phillips on the other hand has a mature/ AFL ready body so I can certainly see him playing round 1.

What do you do when Preuss gets injured or is replaced by mummy.?
I really don't see the situation as being any different to if Grundy or Gawn were injured. Also I think Mummy is beyond cooked. If he came in Preuss would be a trade anyway.

On Marshall. Could easily be where Dusty is but I don't think he's amazing value with Ryder capping him. Also decent chance we get an R/F rookie which will be all I need to risk Preuss happily

oooooh - I like a good flat '0' in the kitty. Haven't managed it yet.

All my players are placeholders until I see some preseason game time. I am going to go now and make my initial list of players with positional and price flexibility so that I can go directly to that list in the last hours before last teams, rather than suddenly plonk Zorks or Cunnington last minute because I had a brain fade. (just examples - still considering both). Will keep it updated and have my list of ranked players at certain price points ready to consider...

At the moment, my team looks horribly cookie cutter and like this:

Pretty busy this week where I am. Schools (which is where I work) have gone back to online for an unknown period of time. Things had been developing and feeling open for some time period too. Sort of reminds me that the upcoming AFL season may still have some considerable challenges looming due to unexpected lock downs and restrictions.

lol - team just changed again, but think this is the structure I
m going to fly with...

What are you expecting preuss to average?
On Marshall. I was thinking the same thing, Ryder takes a lot of his points. With danger not fit apart from sidebottom there is not much value there.
Do you see value in rozee?

hahaha maybe I am better off not playing or just copying your starting team 😀

I still believe our starting structure depends on the number of rookies available , without them their isn't much choice not to start cheaper players/fallen premiums/midpricers (whatever we like to call them)

Unfortunately with a salary restriction $ 500,000.00 k x 22 doesn't fit.

Probably not buying too many premium mids & rucks at that price either.

So something will have to give.

Once Big Bash finishes no doubt I will spend countless hours trying to fit the puzzle together (which is fairly pointless really until Round 1 teams are announced) but fun anyway.

Preuss , all those $ 300k mids & $ 200k forwards , so much fun 😉
absolutely agree, decent rookies critical, 1st picked premiums usually the same for most as well.

Its that point in between on the last 5-7 players where to find the balance plus hoping you don't have a premium or two that spud it up.

Last year went a bit mid price and hurt me by round 2 - Houston, Smith, BZT, Roberton, Naismith, Ceglar, Townsend.

Midfielders went from 32% of my score to then 44-45% for next few rounds.

I looked at that when considering him in my team. It was not an issue in 2020. Marshall with Ryder 103.2 inc EF. Without 102.5. Marshall's three highest scores occurred when Ryder was in the team. I am happy to take a 100 plus fwd so I am going with him. Ryder is also 33 this year and has not played a full season in a while. Last three years has missed 15 games out of a possible 61.

Exactly. Add to that his potentially insanely valuable ruck cover potential, and the aforementioned fact that Ryder could go down, he's a no-brainer pick IMO.

Feels like 4 def, 5 mids, 2 Rucks and 2 Fwds will be the main structure, with variation of premiums within that group.

Question will be do you take a 500k mid (Cripps, Walsh, Rowell) type down to a Heppell.

Do you downgrade a Ruckman to Pruess and upgrade a midfielder?
Think I have more confidence in ruck premiums than midfielders, outside of Oliver and Neale. Also Heppell easier to trade than Preuss if something happens.

Heppell capt of the club. Preuss should do well, some replacement risk from Mummy or sharing of duties etc.

Too early to tell but I agree that he looks undersized and may be in and out of the side this season (Powell). Would suggest he is behind Bailey Scott for a position on a flank/wing

I think I’ll run both Cripps and Heppell. Question for me will be whether to take a Fyfe, Neale or Jelly type versus a breakout mid type like Walsh, Green or Rowell. I struggle picking breakout mids though so am unlikely to go down the breakout route. Cripps over Walsh seems a no brainer if Cripps is fit and playing preseason games.
