Which risky players do you not recommend?
Milera, Preuss, Brown, Ziebell and Daniher as 5 mid pricers is what I was referring to. It's unlikely all 5 will represent good value, but as I said, it could work.

You also have a few injury prone players, such as Cockatoo and Heeney, a few who may not have their ideal mid roles in Fyfe and possibly Cripps, a few are questioning Rowell at that price too (he is in my team though for now). All up it's a side that is too risky for me, but I don't exactly have the best record.

Preuss is definate value imo, Zieball will play every week, Brown is a gamble , Daniher has to be picked at that price if fully fit imo.
Cripps is cheap, Rowell could be a top 5 mid, Heeney is a gamble but he can rack up big scores.
Cockatoo is a must at that price imo.
Sometimes it is who you don't have that can cost you.

First version of what will be many! Tried to keep some of the higher priced rookies in as placeholders as it's easier to take them down to someone cheaper than it is to free up cash from a maxed out bank - speaking of, I currently have 135k in the bank still to spend.

Key thoughts:
- Lloyd, Neale, Oliver, Grundy and Gawn are pretty expensive but they are not about price and more about points. Between the 5 I'll have easy captain options and should be able to play match ups.
- Laird, McDonald and Stewart all seem like good value based on their scoring outputs. Laird (improved mid role), McDonald (should see A LOT of the ball down back) and Stewart (great SC role) should represent good points return for their price.
- Gaff seemed to be hugely impacted by the shorter quarters last season but still managed to score well. His running ability will return to the fore with the longer quarters, and should avoid any tags given their mid line - so for 570k seems to be a good option but one that can easily be "corrected" in the early rounds if needed.
- Forward line is tricky.. a lot of players that seem good on paper but could potentially be picked up cheaper/have question marks. Not sold on Dunkley but he's in for now.. Marshall a no brainer though so he'll survive most versions of my team. Ziebell needs a full preseason to survive but if he does, lockity lock!
- Rookies are just random selections until that puzzle becomes clearer..

It is interesting how severly impacted a team that starts Lloyd, Neale, Grundy and Gawn over some of the cheaper alternaives. It basically cuts you down most G'nR teams down to at best a 4-4-2-2 or a 3-4-2-3, with a Ziebell, Brown etc. coming in at F3 or a Milera type at D3.

It seems that the imact is around 1 less 'keeper'.

I guess the question is though, can you afford to go the season without all 4? If Gawn and Grundy score close to expectations they'll be close to unobtainable.. Neale should drop in price eventually but with his history of starting the season well that might not be until closer to round 10.. Lloyd has shown he's usually not too bad at maintaining his price so could be tricky to bring in.

The other issue is timing.. if Neale drops in price at the same as time as there are other issues needing to be fixed, you can end up having to compromise your team one way or the other. I'm banking on there being the usual group of premiums that drop to around 450-500k due to injury and it being easier to grab 1-2 of them than trying to get the big guys in.

Plus, if after two rounds one of the big guns aren't looking good you can trade them to anyone.. vs. a 500k player than isn't working out and has limited options to trade them to.

I'm currently running those 4 and have a 3-6-2-3 with Zilliams D3, Taranto M6 and Bolton F3. A little compromised with rookies but still with 3 between 130k and 153k

Pondering this team. Phillips and JZ could become a high priced Fwd and a rookie. Based on possible fitness issues for now I am avoiding a possible bad case of Heppellitis. If he was 100% I could work him back in without too much trouble. I like the Big O. He only plays one of the top six rucks(by price) in first 11 games.

Is the appeal with Daniher generally due to his starting price ?

15 games in the last 3 seasons screams problem just waiting to happen.

I guess the first sign of trouble he could be a downgrade to a rookie.

2014 = 59.1
2015 = 60.7
2016 = 68.8
2017 = 86.0

will need to find my little piece of paper again to work out what he needs to average to increase by $ 125-150k.

Think I prefer Brown or Ziebell to be honest.

I guess it might come down to what forward rookies are named Round 1.
I think it is more about the spike to generate his cash at his price ...

first draft

thoughts, pre avergae team, no real surprises sier and hately

I love Sier's scoring. But as a past owner, I'm convinced he caused Buck's marriage breakdown (too soon?) cause the bloke doesn't get a game, and when he does he doesn't get the TOG. Perhaps the Tigers of the Melbourne variety could do with him to fill in.

Heeney no evidence of increasing Mid time, but low risk at that price. I prefer many of the forward line gifts Brown/Daniher/Ziebell crew to Milera & $$$ fwd rookeis, based mostly on price/fallen premo status and that I like Harmes more on the Def line (but more $).

I really like this team. How confident in Tom Phillips are you? While he is taking over a scully/smith sized hole, but those are two players who I've been impressed with SC wise.

It’s interesting how we can all view these tradeo*** differently!

Obviously it depends on who you are dropping down to, but trading off one keeper to be able to get possibly the four best players in the game seems like a decent trade to me.

As others have mentioned, it can be really hard to get these guys (especially four of them) without having to really prioritize this. It can significantly reduce your flexibility, mean you miss out on other discounted options, and so on.

I always planned to be GnR heavy, but this is making me rethink whether it’s worth just paying the price for most if not all of these guys.

...And some not quite as brilliant work done by myself. It's a bit rough really, but it was handy for me before the site went live and should be easy enough for anyone to update each year with the raw data and some basic Excel knowledge.

@Beijing_Sting if the spreadsheet is not still available, let me know and I can upload it again.

Profound apologies @Ironhawk for you missing out. I just went back looking for the post and saw the one from Beg2Differ first. I use the Team Picker constantly as I create different team versions and I keep all of them on tabs adding as I go. Means I can go back and "hybridise" different versions as you go.
