WTC is a absolute farce.

9 teams only playing 6 series home & away with series of various lengths.

How can it be fair when teams don't all play each other ?

Needs to have all teams involved and playing each other at least once , minimum of 2-3 tests.

"Icon" series can then still have "additional" tests which are not part of the WTC.

I actually emailed the ICC probably a decade ago with a proposal that each team would play 4 x 3 series in a 12 month period.

With 9 teams it would work over a 4 year period where every team would play each other H & A , so 16 series in all.

Afghanistan & Ireland get granted Test status and then basically get told they (and Zimbabwe) are not part of the WTC.

Think their was discussion on a 7-5 division split (with promotion & regulation) but then Australia , England , India & South Africa were worried that one of them might get relegated.
I think part of the problem is the big teams would have to host the smaller teams at some stage. They are struggling to make money out of test cricket as it is. I don't know what the fix is because more big matches are needed, but they only way to do that is to get more countries involved.

But how many countries would get permission to play in the boxing day test here? Sri Lanka got beaten here last time in 2.5 days. They havent played a test in Melbourne since.

Yeap. Rule 1 of Australian test cricket, you can't lose at home. The Oz team had so many problems with collapses overseas, and very little seemed to change. Then Hobart 2016 happened. 11am on a Saturday morning. The whole of Oz watches us get bowled out for 85. Mass changes follow.

I'm not sure how much change would help here. Realistically it was the bowlers that couldn't get us over the line in Sydney and Brisbane. Maybe Starc needs a break. Patto/Neser/Abbott could come in. Lyon looked down on confidence but he's still the best spinner in Oz.
Most experts had Australia winning 4-0.

Once we bowled them out for 36 in Adelaide , maybe we got too cocky.

Full credit to India , but with "supposedly" the greatest 4 bowlers in the history of the game , something is seriously amiss (in my opinion).

India's side at the Gabba was essentially an A side.

No Ishant & Kumar for the series at all , Rohit arriving after 2 Tests , Kohli leaving after Adelaide.

Shami , Yadav , Bumrah , Ashwin , Jadega all injured during the series.

Obviously Warner's absense was heavily missed , I still think we have 3 batsman who are not yet at Test level (hard to judge Green & Pucovski in debut series , after reading what Chappell said about Green , was certainly expecting a lot more)

Very embarrassing series lost if you ask me.

Pattinson injured himself during the Boxing Day Test.

The bowlers said they were right to go for the Gabba , so I guess you have to trust them.

Lyon still doesn't have enough variation and if he isn't getting help from a wearing pitch he will struggle.

2022 will be interesting as we have away series against Pakistan , Sri Lanka , Afghanistan & India scheduled.

Hopefully we have a "A" team visiting somewhere soon so Agar & Swepson get a opportunity to show what they are capable of.

Their was a article on CricInfo 12-18 months about Zimbabwe and how they lost a fortune on every Test they actually got at home , and were basically looking at just playing away tests.

Problem is with out home tests not many others are inviting them for tours due to the TV revenue.

Need to keep playing Tests to try and stay competitive but costs too much $$$.

NZ , SL , WI are probably in the same position unless they get Australia , England , India , South Africa touring.

Afghanistan & Ireland finally get Test status and they will probably go broke from it , and playing less cricket now than they were before when they would play Canada , Holland , KENYA , Namibia , Scotland , UAE etc etc in 4 day cricket.

Unfortunately Australia , England , India & South Africa would actually just prefer having series against each other due to the TV deals.

The other sides then "vote" with India in the hope they might get a token series against them every now and again.

Because the ICC don't actually schedule series between all countries equally & fairly , counties can essentially choose who & when they want to play without any penalty , eg Australia cancelling Bangladesh series regularly.

I would like us to use the winter months more and schedule Tests in Cairns & Darwin against Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Ireland , Pakistan , Zimbabwe etc etc.

Probably not worth any $$$ to CA though so they can't be bothered.

Somehow their needs to be a incentive from the ICC to actually make sure these series happen.

I think something like this is the only way it could work - having divisions, getting all teams involved and fixed series length. Have a 4 or 5 year cycle, 2 divisions of 6, play each team in your division twice (home and away), each team in the other division once (neutral country). Three tests per series, if you have longer series for the Ashes etc, only the first 3 tests count towards the championship.

5 pts for an away series win, 3 for a home win. 2 pts for an away draw, 1 for a home draw. 3 and 1 for neutral games. -5 pts for any series not played in a cycle. Bottom 2 teams in Div 1 and top 2 in Div 2 have a round robin play off series after each cycle, single test against each of the other 3 teams, top 2 to Div 1, bottom 2 to Div 2.

This gets more games for developing nations and encourages the better teams to actually play the minnows occasionally. If you are good enough, you won't get relegated, if not - get better! It's 48 tests (51 for those in the play o***) over a 4-5 year period - 10-12 tests per year is manageable, surely - they play 5-6 here in a 2 month period here most summers. It should be an honour to represent your country, no matter who you play.

Of course it will never happen due to money, but it's definitely manageable if they want it to happen. Any other series held (which still could happen), can be held between series. I'm sure this structure could be tweaked to improve it, but it will never happen - too much cash in tests between the big 4-5 teams.

Joe Root's 100th Test

Debuted in December 2012.

Just highlights how many Tests some countries play each year (compared to others)

I think England have 16 Tests scheduled for this year.

💯 for Root

9th player to score a century in their 100th Test (Punter did it in both Innings)

Root is the first to score a century in his 98th , 99th & 100th Test.
