SCS ULTIMATE LEAGUE MEDIA RELEASE

In unusual timing for an unusual season, The Dagobah Immortals have held their Best & Fairest for season 2020.

The winner of the Immortals B & F award will receive the JACK GARDEN MEDAL

Jack Garden, a lightening fast wingman, played 116 games for Essendon in 1915 and 1920 to 1926, with the 4 years gap due to his WW1 service.Garden won Essendon's B&F in 1920, and was a member of their 1923 and 1924 Premiership teams. He also wore the Big V jumper on a number of occasions, and upon VFL retirement became Captain-Coach of Kew whom he lead to the 1927 Premiership.

The Garden family were very close friends with the family of Dagobah Immortals Manager Philzsay's family. Jack Garden's daughter Mary was best friends with Philzsay's grandmother. Philzsay's mother often described Mary, her brother John and sister Joan as her de facto grandparents; and a young Philzsay would visit the Garden's every Christmas Day. None of Mary, John or Joan had children, and with John passing away during the 2020 season the Garden lineage has come to an end.

Voting for the JACK GARDEN MEDAL sees potentially a different amount of votes awarded for every game, with the some of the voting taking into account the positions of the players. For each game the following votes are awarded:

1 - Highest scoring defender
1 - Highest scoring forward
1 - Highest scoring from the midfielder & ruck group
1 - 2nd Highest scoring from the midfielder & ruck group
1 - Highest scoring player outside of the 4 points awarded above, regardless of position.
1 - Optional coaches award point. This is for a player, not having earned a point from the above group, who the coach feels deserves a point, it my be for an out of the box performance from a rookie, or scoring significantly higher then their direct opponent, or any other reason. Note this point is optional, with it having been awarded only 4 times in the 2020 season.
0.5 - Bonus half point for anyone scoring 120 to 139 points in the game.
1 - Bonus point for anyone scoring 140 to 159 points in a game.
1.5 - Bonus points for anyone scoring 160+ points in a game, meaning that a player scoring over this most probably earned 2.5 points for the game in total.

PROPOSED RULE CHANGE

RUCKS
When the Keeper League was developed (upon which the Ultimate is derived) AFL teams largely played two rucks. This allowed the keeper league to keep the same format and player positions as SC. As we have seen in recent years, with 2020 being more so, teams moving to one genuine ruckman and a stop gap for relief.

We that in mind, the proposed rule change is that teams will be allowed to play a forward as a ruck for one of their two ruck positions in the case they do not have enough rucks in their team to fulfill their team. Teams must have at least 4 ruck eligible players to able to access this rule.

This is to allow teams to still be competitive without giving teams an advantage who don't team-list rucks.

INFORMATION TO CONSIDER:
  • The top 20 rucks averaged ~70 or more. A reserve ruck replacing an injured main ruck is most likely to score around the teams main ruck.
  • The top 60 forwards averaged ~70 or more. Therefore, your 7th (if all players are fit) is likely to score below 70.
  • Having to play with a donut decreases the fun in the game, listing a young ruck for a few seasons who then gets a starting role is great fun. (ROB for me in keeper, Draper for Tim, etc)
Thoughts?

As a team that has lost a young up and coming ruckman (McLean) to forward status I was getting worried that I was going to have to punt on a few young or not likely to play rucks and most likely cop many donuts this year. Therefore I am all for a rule that means I don’t have to spend all my trades on rucks!

Like it a lot Ken!

Just thinking out loud but I wouldn’t mind also seeing something that would push such FWD player being a KPF as well just to mimic how KPFs tend to be that pinch hitting player. Perhaps another condition could be that in that week you also need at least two 190 cm+ fwds in your fwd 7 if utilising the rule.

Something similar was discussed by Ken and I as an additional condition from our brief discussions. Our worry was we may be over complicating things, however, having had another coach suggest it, if others had similar feelings then we could well look at considering it. 👍

Tim and I have discussed this, and decided to keep the rule simple to follow and implement.

We could make all Forwards 195cm or taller Ruck/Forwards, then we would have players like Charlie Curnow and Darcy Fogarty who are key forwards ineligible. In the end, whether you play a Hawkins type in the FWD position or the RUC position or Jamie Elliott vice versa, it will make no difference to the score.

Team Lists
  • Free Agents have been removed from your team list. You no longer have rights to their contract.
  • RFAs are still listed as a reminder that you will have to make a decision on them. You can't trade them at this stage as you don't own their rights, only the ability to resign them and/or match rival bids in the preseason process.
  • 2nd Contract eligible are still on your list. You have the rights to their contracts and therefore you can trade those rights to another team without a contract attached.
  • All other players have contracts and can be traded as per usual.
  • Draft picks can be traded as per usual.
All teams have 41 players or less, therefore no further delistings are required, though they can still be made.

Preseason Draft and Signing Period

This is how I see the preseason draft and signing period playing out, however this isn't set in stone and will need to fit with individual availability.

The order of drafting and signing will be as follows:

1. Free Agents
  • There are 54 players who fit the criteria for the free agent auction draft.
  • This will run in the same manner as the top 60 in the inaugural draft.
  • Therefore, we will need up to 3 hours to complete.
2. Restricted Free Agents
  • There are 3 players who are eligible for the restricted free agent auction draft.
  • This will run in the same manner as the 2017 Rookie players in the inaugural draft.
  • This won't take very long. :)
3. 2nd Contract
  • Teams will need to determine whether eligible players will be retained.
  • Retained players will need to be signed before the Rookie and Unlisted Player Draft.
  • The signing process is the same as the 2017 Rookie players in the inaugural draft (i.e. predetermined contract table)
  • This process doesn't require all to be available.
  • There will be a set deadline
4. Trade and Delisting Deadline
  • Deadline to enable Rookie and Unlisted Player Draft doc to be completed.
5. Rookie and Unlisted Player Draft.
  • This will run in the same manner as rounds 19 onwards in the inaugural draft.
  • Teams must ensure that they stay within the contract year and salary caps at all times.
  • Up to 2 hours will be required.
Ideally, 3 - 5 are completed after the preseason games, so as to give us all as much information as can be garnered.

No worries, good to hear that we had similar lines of thinking. Don’t mind the 195cm and above rule for SCSUL R/Fs.

My only thinking was that similar to the 4 rucks on the list condition, we could also put something similar in for the 195cm players (ie two need to be on field). But most sides seem to have 2 KPFs per week playing anyway so for simplicity, you may be right that it makes no difference.

I am also in favour of the ruck rule change. I was actually thinking just yesterday that AFL SC is made significantly more complicated by the fact that we need two on field rucks, despite most teams not playing two.

I think changing our approach for UL more closely mimics AFL, which I think has been one of the goals of the competition.

I would be open to the height cutoff as well, but can see the benefits of simplicity, especially if that makes life easier for Ken.

I like the need to have at least 4 rucks on our lists though. If we wanted to avoid “gaming”, there could be some sort of quality threshold imposed here (eg at least two have to be paid more than $X to be able to use a forward as backup).

I also had a similar thought this afternoon about your point above Darkie re. Quality of the x 4. But then I thought maybe that would further restrict, possibly too much, particularly for those that were on a RUC early in their career. Maybe they hadn’t even played a game by the time they are on a 2nd contract, then locked in a 5 year deal but on minimum money as they hadn’t played yet. Probably gets too hard.

It’d be similar for my list this year now that Bellchambers has retired. Draper, my R2 to Grundy, is on ~$125K but likely wouldn’t meet a ‘quality’ $ threshold.

Nice! And you don’t want to encourage good selections like this one. Could also do it on games played or average in a prior season(s), which would likely address situations like Draper, but it may not be necessary. Interesting that you thought of it as well, but if others aren’t worried about it, I could definitely live with the simpler rule.

YOUNGSTERS ON THE MOVE
The first trade of the Ulitmate Preseason Draft and Signing period has been made between grand finalist Goodie's Giants FC and beaten preliminary finalist Creme De La Creme.

Damon Greaves and Will Hamill leave the Giants, along with 2022 Pre-Season Round 4, to join the Creme's. Whilst Trent Bianco comes the other way, bringing with him a sway of draft picks (2021 Pre-Season Round 3, 2021 Pre-Season Round 4 and 2022 Pre-Season Round 2).

From Dagobah Sports Entertainment Nightly news.....

"And now we cross over to Tracene Kane down at The Quagmire for the latest Immortals news, I believe the is a fair bit happening behind the scenes Tracene?"

"That's right Gavin, the big talk around the corridors centre on the contract talks with Jack Lukosius. Both parties are keen to resign, however Lukosius has put a big price on his head after a great end to his 2020 season where of course he ended up coming 4th in the Jack Garden Medal last week. I believe the contract will get done, it just a matter on which side bends first on the terms and number of years.

Meanwhile I've been told the relationship between Jaidyn Stephenson Immortals and Manager Philzsay has soured, with Philzsay telling Jaidyn in no uncertain terms to pull his finger out. Stephenson meanwhile has been looking around at other teams but interest has been minimal I'm told.

Also rumours have it that Liam Stocker, Jack Redden, Jordan Clark and Rhys Mathieson have all been exploring there options. Plus on a side note Jack Bowes has been training with the defenders this preseason, and Adam Cerra in the midfield, expect these two to swap roles. Back to you Gavin."

"Thanks Tracene, interesting times. Now to Rebecca with the weather".
