I really liked Flynn a couple of years ago in a preseason game, be interesting to see if they actually go with him when they get to the real stuff, Cameron hasn't liked playing young guys when possible, a major reason why so many have left.
Their whole list has been young for 9 years. Isn't that why they all left?

Coming around to the idea that Downie will play round one. Just caught the short highlights of yesterday’s intra club game, and noted that James Cousins was in the 2’s along with Dan Howe.

With Mitchell highly likely to miss round one I expected Cousins would be a shoe in to play. So makes me think that Shiels might be re-introduced into that main midfield rotation to help cover Mitchell, as he found himself on a flank for a lot of last year. Dan Howe is that utility tye mid for us, that can play inside, on the wing, or in the backline. With Downie in the ones, and looking rather impressive from the highlights coupled with the match reports from onlookers, he’s starting to feel more and more likely for round one for mine now. Will be interesting to see how he goes against the Dogs next week.

Keep seeing Valente's name a lot , don't know enough about Fremantle but how/where does he fit in amongst Fyfe , Brayshaw , Walters , Mundy , Cerra , Acres , Serong , Aish , Bewley , Tucker , Blakely (surely this is his year) etc

Maybe JL is trying to be Mr Magnets too

It's a concern I agree, but let's face it, it's freo, we are going to get injuries.

I see us lining up something like this through the midfield.

C: Acres, Cerra, Aish
HF: Walters
F:Fyfe

R: Serong, Brayshaw

Bench: Mundy, Valente?

Fyfe yes, will play majority of time midfield, but I reckon we will see 60/40 split. Walters midfield time will be limited this year I reckon.

Mundy will no doubt rotate through the middle, but its his last season and it's time for the kids to take the majority of the load. Tucker returning from injury, probably more of an outside player though so maybe not in direct competition with Valente?

Bewley, Blakely (this is not his year) will be in the magoos.

I reckon there is a spot for Valente in the second midfield rotation and they'll want to give him a go now that he finally fit after 2 years ruined by injury. I know he slid in the draft but I think his groin injury may have played some part in that. Think they see him as a future leader, plus they gave him Pav's 29 to wear!

Having said that, if I had to pick now, I would say he won't be in the round 1 team, but we will definitely see him at some stage this year, should he remain fit.

With Tom Mitchell touch-and-go for the early rounds as he recovers from an off-season shoulder reconstruction, Clarkson said Finn Maginness presented an option but that the second-year prospect would need to add other strings to his bow.

"Physically he's ready, it's just about learning the game and the craft," Clarkson said.

"He's played all of his junior footy predominantly as an inside midfielder and he's not going to, right at this point, replace (James) Worpel or (Liam) Shiels or (Jaeger) O'Meara or Mitchell in that inside space.

"We need to teach Finn Maginness how can he play a little bit of wing, a little bit of half-back, a little bit of half-forward.

"But we also need to teach O'Meara and Mitchell to play other positions, too."

With Chad Wingard already used in the forward/midfield split, Clarkson nominated Breust, Dylan Moore and draftees Tyler Brockman and Seamus Mitchell as other considerations.

I do like the sound of a few things in that article, such as wanting a midfield like 2013 and McEvoy signing until the end of 2022.

I can't see Mitchell playing in another role to be honest. Most of the others can probably move to the wing, or forwards, but you would be keeping Tom around the ball surely, at least if he's fully fit.

I tell you what though if they all stayed fit and well that is one very impressive looking midfield.

Don't get to see a lot of Freo games on FTA but Brayshaw , Cerra & Serong all are impressive to watch.

Certainly a balancing act though with them and then still with Fyfe , Mundy & Walters.

Still think when it comes crunch time Fyfe will just have to move himself into the mids.

Thought Tucker was developing nicely last season until his injury.

2022 must be Blakely's year then 😀

Thanks for the response

Given the starting mids for whites and purples, looks like he fits somewhere else as he wasn't in that group that was tweeted about. Didn't play the game, must be carrying an injury.

Big game from chapman apparently. Article on TheWest behind the paywall which may become available soon on intra club wrap up.

Purple: Mundy, Aish, Blakey and Sandi White: Cerra, Serong, Brayshaw and Lobb.

Was a post saying he was on the sidelines doing rope work.

Doesn't Hamling & Pearce returning affect Chapman getting a game though ?

Although I did read somewhere else that Cox could go forward if Darcy is out and they opt to use Lobb in the ruck instead of Meek so maybe that opens up a spot in defence for Chapman

I don't know how we fit them all in to be honest, but JL is on record saying he wants Cox to remain down back for the time being

Treacy will play if your above scenario eventuates

I think intraclubs games just confuse things even more.

Need to wait for the preseason game whatever it is called these days , even then if they are playing 26 aside and a few first choices are missing/managed.

When is the pre season. Looking up 2021 AFL pre season fixture only finds old articles saying it starts Feb 18th.

Yet so many of the list clogger types are still there and still in the mix for games. Mismanaged salary cap sure didn't help though, they cooked it real bad.

Mitchell is actually a really decent forward, people forget that's the role he played for Sydney because Horse hates to play people in the midfield, it also happens to be the reason he left so obviously not ideal to send him back there but if they give him a 70/30 type split it might be more tolerable than the opposite it was at Sydney. Really craft up there and obviously amazing at forward stoppages.

And Sholl is a really good one, not sure he can improve quite enough, will depend if he can do extra things but his last couple of games weren't flukes, they were a team realising who their best kick was even if it was a 20 year old who'd played 5 games and getting it to him. Be interesting to see his role and I'm honestly not sure where the best role for him actually will be (HB, wing or pure mid all have +/- for him). I'm watching very closely though.

The Hately comment interesting, if he's not in their first midfield group then Sholl just about must be. Not sure you can have two guys as dinky as Crouch and Laird without having someone with genuine penetration alongside them.
