I read Wogitalia's comments as more to do with the way teams will be announced this year. We won't know sunday teams until 4-5 games have been played already so the options to change plans a pretty limited if the sunday rookies don't eventuate.
That is a major concern with knowing teams. We have to hope they will continue the tradition of announcing throughout the week.

The 50% goes back to an earlier comment: "We've just had 50% of the preseason games done."

Nor is @wogitalia. We get the inter club practice matches currently played and this weeks AAMI series this year. That's it, for better or worse, and the stats you get coming out of those games. The club insider commentary during each game was quite insightful.
"Pretty significant data set" was the phrase used, unless I'm missing something there. Doesn't meet my standards.

Insider commentary and opinions are generally not reliable. Statistics and numbers on the other hand can't lie or bend the truth, they paint a real picture.

Anyway I'm signing out of this conversation, have said my part. Best of luck with the slow burning $200k rookies :) Will be interesting to re-visit this come round 1.

I would say two weeks out people panicking about a lack of solid rookies is the norm actually......
Once again making deductions from data that is of poor validity. But hey I've said my part. Let the panic set in!
I don't think SC Coaches are panicking, concerned yes. Basically, we should be prepared for as many possible scenarios, regarding the number of Rookies avaiable for Rd1. That way, there is no need for panic.

In the 2020 JLT series (a 2 Round series) there were 13 Def Rookies played.
8 played the "Full dress rehearsal" JLT2 game
Only 4 of those debuted in Round 1: BZT, McAsey, Brander & Starcevich.
2 of those were on Saturday, in games 3 and 4. 2 were on Sunday.

In the 2019 JLT series (a Round series) there were 11 Def Rookies that played both games.
9 of those debuted in Rnd 1.
Our task was made easier to pick our teams, with Port announcing early that Rozee (D/F) and Duursma (M/D) would debut, and both were Def eligible.

So I guess we wait and see what happens in this years 1 Round Community series.
Just using 2020 as a guide, imagine this scenario.
In 2020 the teams were announced Thurs, and the Sunday teams were "finalised" Friday.
Now imagine it was this years scenario.
BZT played a Friday game.
McAsey played a Saturday game.
There were 3 games played on Sunday, and after 4 or 5 games were played, before you even saw the Sunday teams, you had 2 Def Rookies that were locked into play.
You have to wait until late Saturday afternoon, just to see if they are the only 2 Def Rookies you'll get for Round 1!!!

Don't you think it is prudent, to have a back up plan in place, pre-planned for, rather than the attitude of "Every year people panic that the Rookies won't come, but they always turn up."

Point 1 - last year of the 8 from the full dress rehearsal, only 4 played.
Point 2 - there was no junior competition last year, so most of this years Rookies are behind the 8 ball in their development, compared to previous seasons Rookies.
Point 3 - there's no Thurs night teams, with Sunday teams finalised Friday, before Fridays game is played this season.

Round 1 2021
Thurs - Rich v Carl
Before this game is played, you will know the teams/(squads?) for
Fri - Coll v Wbull
.Before this game is played, you will know the teams/(squads) for
Sat - Melb v Fre + Ade v Geel + Ess v Haw + Bris v Syd
Before the Ess v Haw + Bris v Syd games, you should know the Sunday teams/(squads?).

So there will be 4 games done and dusted, before you even know who is playing Sunday.
We still don't know for sure, if the Sunday teams being announced Saturday, or the Saturday games being announced Friday will be squads, or actuall playing 22's!!!!

If you can't see that we are sailing into unchartered waters, with less pre-season games, underdone juniors coming off a season of no football, late team announcements and final announcements, and a truly unknown quantity AND quality of Rookies, and plan accordingly, you are very likely to be cursing your SC season by the end of Round 1!

Keep in mind too, that the early fixturing is a nightmare for this scenario

Rnd 1 - Thurs 1 game, Fri 1 game, Sat afternoon 2 games, Sat night 2 games, Sunday 3 games.
Rnd 2 - Thurs 1 game, Fri 1 game, Sat afternoon 2 games, Sat night 2 games, Sunday 3 games.
Rnd 3 - Thurs 1 game, Fri 2 games, Sat aft 2 games, Sat night 1 game, Sunday 2 games, Monday 1 game.
Rnd 4 - Thurs 1 game, Fri 1 game, Sat afternoon 2 games, Sat night 2 games, Sunday 3 games.
Rnd 5 - Thurs 1 game, Fri 1 game, Sat afternoon 2 games, Sat night 2 games, Sunday 3 games.

The potential for carnage in those early Rounds has always been a thing, but with late team (or is it squads?!) announcements, the carnage news will likely hit too late for us to scramble a solution!!!!

Which year was it that we had no cheap forward rookies Rd 1 and ended up with 200k types at F5 and F6?

Far easier to prepare to spend more at D4 to D6 and one can always trade down if a cheap rookie does bob up.

All you need to know about Duggan this season in this article at the bottom of the post and straight from the horse's mouth.

Basically he will do the 'team thing' which at the moment means playing as a midfielder while Yeo is out. He prefers to play as a defender and may end up back there at some stage this season depending on what the team needs.

That’s exactly why mid price is the way to go. Regardless of which rookies show up round 1, they will be rested at some stage due to lack of games from last year. They will all be underdone from match condition and hardness. Management from clubs will be paramount this year and the need for players to play consecutively will be key. A player in the system 2-3 years will be much more advanced from a rookie from pre seasons. I’ll be looking to having 1-2 first year players maximum on field with the hope of being able to manage them with bench players due the round announcement changes if need be. DPP will also be huge. I have Dunkley and Danger in the mids at this stage for flexibility. This is the perfect season for left field plays but the key will be maintaining a full squad each week!

I guess we agree to disagree then, because I'm certainly not calling a few intra club scratch matches without stats or scores 50% of our data set. ;)

More specifically just that the teams that have been picked for 50% of the inter-club matches are going to be a very decent indicator of what players are in contention for round one. Teams have now played 50% of their inter-club games, we've got one more week for rookies to earn a spot and if they're not in the sides at 90% strength it's tough to see them making the 100% teams.

It's not the days gone by with 4 games where the first game is basically the reserves and a senior on each line to keep things organised. Most teams have gone in at damn near full strength for the first round of practice games and that allows us to use those teams for initial planning, throwing that information out because CD didn't give us nice neat stats seems like throwing the baby out with bathwater to me.

But the teams breaking are going to be super annoying as well, hopefully clubs will talk up the debutants with the puff pieces during the week so we can find out and hopefully with the travel restrictions that are likely it will be easier to find out with families needing more notice.

Add to this the fact that some rookies have played no footy in 2020, realistically there will be fewer debutants in Rd 1.

If Whitfield is named round 1 would you pick him?
Probably not, due to his durability I'd like to see minimum 3 consecutive games. If all and well, maybe during byes, but my current structure only permits 1 upgrade in defence, so possibly not after all that.

This is actually my main concern. And it’s not just round 1 - would be nice to have some confidence heading into round 2 that we actually have a starting 22, without having to trade to get it.
