Had already planned on going heavy in the backline, so the lack of def rookies hasn't fazed me at all.
Hopefully only need to make 1 def upgrade for the year.
Have Fyfe as my loophole and eventual swingset to move Laird back when needed.

Lloyd is just too consistent and has punished me the last few years, I'll just cop the high price and hope he continues scoring tonnes for a laugh. The potential of Dawson pinching his kickouts is a worry but I'll back the Gull in to find the chips and manage 115ppg.
Stewart just a very solid pick, a bit underpriced thanks to his injury effected game last season.
Usually avoid Tigs players but I think Short is up to premo scoring this season, won't be the sole kickout taker, but will be looked for by team mates regularly with the new stand the mark rule, wasn't amazing in the praccy match the other day but was hot on the umpire trying to get blokes pinned for shuffling around while on the mark which was a good laugh.
McDonald not as solid a lock as he was coming into the season, but I'll still back him in. Even if he's a bust there's legitimately 10 offer defenders I'd be happy to pick this season and won't be the end of the world to sideways him if Corr/Ziebell tank his scoring.

Don't think I've started JKelly before, I'll back him in to pump out top scorers until he inevitable goes down, I'll just pray that his is the year he plays 22.
TMitch will be given every chance to make my starting team. If he's named round 1 he's in. If he's not I turn him into Zerrett who's playing the same match that week so no late headaches.
Laird is just very good, freebie for top 2-3 defender this year, I'm going to miss him being def eligible.
Cripps is back. Hard to pass up that potential at 525k

Rucks are set and forget as they have been for the last 3 years.

Was worried about Danger and old man injuries, but he moved well in limited game time, his role is rock solid, and his draw is very appealing. Plus the forward line is getting more and more disappointing by the day.
Dusty is a boring pick, reckon he will nudge his way back up the 105ppg and be durable, just not much else to chose from at the moment.
Butters is a new addition after Bevo straight up said that Dunkley is gonna be copping the Bevo treatment again this year.
Good general progression, plays in a strong team, touted for a bit more midfield time, etc.
Reckon he can go at 95ppg this season and that would be a win in my books.

IMO, I think the problem with this team, is that altough you only need 1 DEF upgrade, you need 5 MID upgrades. Whilst I'm all for value, trying to get in the Neale's, Oliver's, Macrae's, Petracca's etc could be very hard if they go top 10 again when you may need all 5.

Looking at your ranks you know what you are doing, but that would be my only comment, aside from your M1 and M2 not having the best recent injury history ;)

I doubt I'll be getting all of those blokes, it's just not feasible to have them all.
I'll be looking for value upgrades to get my team full premium ASAP.
Last year I wasn't able to get the likes of Oliver, Steele, Petracca, Zerrett, Ryan, Boak, JKelly, Crouch, Brayshaw etc.
They just cost too much and stall the rest of my upgrades.

Just putting my preferred team (structure wise) down after the first week of practice games to refer to later on :-

Screen Shot 2021-03-03 at 1.41.08 pm.png

Defence

Lloyd - whilst he is overpriced in my opinion, he is a lock to finish top 3/ just so consistent & durable

Laird - lock, everyone will have him I think

Mills - all about that midfield role, looks like the shackles have been released at last.... can I trust horse on this one :p

Williams - not 100% on this one but the value is there. Considered Duggan also but I think Williams has a greater chance of being a premium.

Jones & Gould I have real reservations about them being there round 1 (although Jones appears to be very close it seems) - I can go to Cox but will need to juggle. Highmore there as the best chance 117K rookie & Fyfe is there as the floating donut loophole.

Midfield

Neale - looked great, not hampered at all. Like Lloyd, overpriced but has history of starting the season strong.

Oliver & Trac - showed enough to keep their spots, both look in good shape.

Walsh & Cripps - the 2 blues have been locked since day 1 & haven't moved.

Campbell/Powell/Downie I am very comfortable in starting -all look they could score well in their roles. Gulden, Lazzaro & Macrae appeal as good mid rookies for the bench.

Rucks

Lock & Load - easy decision

Forwards

Danger - looked awesome in the 1/2 he played, number 1 fwd this year for mine.

ZDID - the 200K bargain boys, all look great value. Dow looks a completely different player this year.

Smith - has a nice role, needs to cement his spot in the next game.

Rowe & Waterman look nice fwd benchies to me at this stage.

Based on current information a realistic Gawn & Grundy starting side only gives you 12 premiums (even then Williams is debatable)

D: LLOYD , LAIRD * , STEWART , DOCHERTY , WILLIAMS , Butts / Cox * , Ling

M: OLIVER , KELLY , DANGERFIELD * , FYFE , CRIPPS , Powell , F Macrae * , E Smith * / Downie , Gulden , Lazarro

R: GAWN , GRUNDY / Flynn

F: Ziebell , Daniher , Impey , Dow * , Campbell * , Cahill / Rowe , Waterman

Time for some Community Series games

With the exception of Butters, I really really like this team. Across 3 out of 4 players, we have around 1 player (with another being 50-50) that's different. Only problem is whether we can pull off that defensive structure with the rookies.

I like it... especially the double Demon midfield 😎
Just a couple of comments / questions as follows :
1. I know you said you were uncertain about the 2 on field Def rookies and could fix with a juggle to Cox. This implies that you still have another viable rookie at F6. How confident are you about the availability of this extra rookie and what is your plan if you need to play Cox at D6 ?
2. No Tim Green I see... What is your thinking here?
3. Williams at D4 - I see the upside and I have owned him in previous seasons so I understand the appeal... however he is built from tissue paper and always picks up niggles and knocks... is this of any concern to you?

Apart from that, very similar to my team in many ways, so much to like 👍

Yeah I know , too safe and conservative and actually looks quite unexciting to be honest.

Not really convinced by M6-11 but hopefully Community Series tells more.

Still looking at R2 options though in Big O , Flynn , Martin & McEvoy.

And keen to see what Meek does.

Have looked at 25 different players between $ 200-350k for D5 so no doubt one of them will work , would actually rather gamble at R2.

Stick with this, it looks good to me! Leave the unconventional ruck options alone!

Could all depend on 2 of Jones , Gould & Highmore being named or it all changes
