Paddy Dow:
Knocks in the past had primarily been - as I understood it:
(i) Lack of physicality (absorb hits / fend off tacklers)
(ii) Poor DE, in particular by foot
How did he go tonight on those fronts? Was the earlier form a mirage due to a lack of pressure or did he go OK on those fronts (at least OK enough to justify the elevated starting price vs a rookie)?

He was fine on both of those but his biggest issue has always been not finding the ball which did pop up again tonight. He basically looks good as a pure midfielder but couldn't get near it anywhere else, last week he actually showed a bit in that area by being dangerous forward as well and generally prolific but this week with reduced midfield time he fell back into old habits.
I think he still sits firmly in the possible pile fwiw, one poor game and one very good game. Basically if I have enough cheap options I'll pass, if I don't I wont, but he's still a stronger on field option than most with that role and scoring potential it does present.

I think he is more likely to have these games when he has no targets to actually hit.
Blues had Casboult, McGovern, TDK, C. Curnow unavailable, then lost McKay. Forward mix would have been very different to what they had trained with most of the summer (Betts missing as well and Martin wasn't interested). This would also have affected the disposal efficiency of defenders like Doc, as they didn't have the normal outlet tall targets.
This was a typical practice match, where the intensity of the fringe and new players (keen to impress) was generally at a higher level than the established fixtures.
Also, the SC scores seemed to distort quite badly later in the game, when you had the likes of O'Brien and Cuningham scoring 40's in just over a quarter - dragging other scores downwards.
The questions around established players you were previously considering, should be 1) was the role what I was hoping for, and 2) did he get injured? If the answers are positive - no reason to alter thinking.

Like other Tiges have said he just didn't have anyone's spot to take. Doesn't have a Dan Rioli's closing speed inside 50 and doesn't have the step of a Shai Bolton in the middle. Just like Dan Butler he'll look like a million bucks playing for the Saints (is definitely still a promising AFL player) but in the Tiger's side - specifically among the players that he's competing with in the 22 - he just doesn't offer anything additional that can't be covered by a guy on a lower salary. I think that's a bit to do with it.
In the end he is good enough to be worth more to Saints and we need money ball guys to keep the salary cap down. Butler was the same - worth way more to Saints in their pay structure.

I tend to agree. In Dow you've got a guy at 200k with M/F swing who was 3rd in CBAs last night. B Campbell at 189k > what are we expecting from him. He's a guy that could easily throw up 40-50s. I'm all ears about the fwd rooks people could replace Dow with (Henry/Kelly/Jones?). I can't see we have much choice but to pick Dow tbh

I read the comments on Carlton's BF gameday thread. They were pretty happy with Dow's performance. It sounds like he is at least likely to get a run of games. As a m/f at his price i think i have to be realistic and hold. They were not at all happy with Docherty's game but he had 27 possessions in a bad game. I'm really thinking about Mills to Docherty. Also, they didn't seem to have any forwards so maybe we can go a bit easy on the mids with no one to kick to?

Dimmawitt's Moneyball point is also valid, Aarts came in to play 14 games on basically match payments.
Was very stiff to miss out after the Brisbane final loss,plenty of others struggled that night.
Higgins knock was always his kicking depth,he's not a long kick & makes up for it with lots of dinky little chips.
This can be amazing or dreadful to watch & I'm not sure how it's marked SC wise.

From my experience, round 1 roles matter much more than pre season scores. I don’t see any reason why Walsh and Cripps would make out of the midfield come round 1, so they’re looking pretty good from my point of view.
Dow is probably a bit more uncertain, since they may have been experimenting with him last night, but looks good value at only 80k more than a rookie.
