From my experience, round 1 roles matter much more than pre season scores. I don’t see any reason why Walsh and Cripps would make out of the midfield come round 1, so they’re looking pretty good from my point of view.

Dow is probably a bit more uncertain, since they may have been experimenting with him last night, but looks good value at only 80k more than a rookie.
Thoughts?
I agree in general on Cripps and Walsh. But I had planned for four Carlton premos (those two plus Docherty and Williams) and the team was bad enough last night that I am now worried about that. Cripps one of my first picked but Walsh now teetering on the edge of my team.

I think they're testing Dow out in the hope he steps up and I'm worried he is going to fail the test and get dropped to send a message.

Hate this kind of decision and know I will get it wrong. Think it's equally plausible that it all comes together for him and he goes at 80+ or he bombs and doesn't play after RD3. It may be true that our hand is forced and we have to pick him anyway, and that all of the options have worse JS. But 200k players who get dropped are poison.

Still plenty of time to get the team sorted and injuries may influence who gets an opportunity anyway.

He had 18 CBA, 17 disposals I don’t think it was that bad. Something obviously wasn’t right due to his average SuperCoach score. I think he will score better than all the expensive rookies and his priced at one.
His history shows quite a few 17+ disposal games with very limited supercoach scoring. Some players just don't move the needle. I've been looking for players like Wines and Hopper to break out since champion data raved about their junior record but they never get there.
He should beat his price but I would still prefer a basement price cash cow.

Are people really writing off a 523k Cripps?
Agree, need to be careful not too read too much into roles, yet dont ignore what we did see when in roles.

Walsh - has dropped out of my team. Did well when Cripps forward, not going to happen like it did 2H. Williams too good on the inside and will take points he received last year.

Cripps - ignore time forward for 3Q, not likely in a game. Note handball to kick ratio was ridiculous, going to be distributor by hand to Walsh, he talked about this pre season. This could hurt him getting to 110 levels. Williams may steal some inside points too. Could drop out of my team.

Williams - in. Good inside role and dangerous forward. Had dropped him on Martin comment, however, his forward role was as a crumber when he kicked goals. Back in my team although dont like injury risk. Limiting these players.

Dow - question marks. Lots of CBA, ave return. Reied on Cripps not being there. Could be a good hedge on Williams if the latter gets injured. Role in my team depends on rookies picked.

Martin - expect he is relegated forward, didnt do much from what I saw.

Comparision to days of geelong having number of SC relevant players, Carlton is not Geelong!

Appreciate all the insights above, all helpful and just giving my 2c.

Just want make one point on the SC score's for the preseason games and not being too fixated on what people score, remember teams are playing with extended benches, last night 51 players played that's an extra 7 players taking a slice of the 3300 scoring pie.

Also the people that watched Carlton's other practice game last week, was it as uncontested as last night? If it was more contested that could help explain why some players looked a lot better then and not so much last night. Last night was pretty free flowing and not what you would expect from a home and away game, so many times players were out on the wings with no one around them, definitely suited some players.

What’s everyone thought on hunter Clarke is Williams a head of him
The thing to consider with Clark is that Zak Jones wasn't playing last night. They've got a lot of potential 80s or 90s players floating around various midfield/wing/hbf/hff roles and competing for points in Ross, Higgins, Billings, Clark, Jones, Crouch, Gresham and maybe even Hill. That could be too many for one of those players to stand out.

I tend to agree. In Dow you've got a guy at 200k with M/F swing who was 3rd in CBAs last night. B Campbell at 189k > what are we expecting from him. He's a guy that could easily throw up 40-50s. I'm all ears about the fwd rooks people could replace Dow with (Henry/Kelly/Jones?). I can't see we have much choice but to pick Dow tbh
Forward rookies are a bunch of blokes that will average 40, for every Max King you get 30 duds up there.

Dow at least has the role.

Lots of options to roll through the saints midfield.

De Koning(124k DEF) in the ruck is interesting if Fort and Stanley are out for longer periods. Might end up playing FB instead with Blicavs in the ruck.
