Excellent then , hope history repeats itself for you then πŸ˜€

Maybe Mummy is hungry and decides to tackle him and snap in half as well πŸ˜€

3-5 rookie eligible rucks likely to be named Round 1 , be crazy not to explore all options at this stage.
So if you bypass Gawn & take the rookie rucks, you will also need to consider your captaincy options which without having Gawn as an option becomes quite difficult. You could take Neale for example but there is always the risk he will be heavily tagged like the Swans did with Clarke & the saints did with Seb Ross last season. One of the beauties with Gawn being a ruck & a great capt choice is he will nearly always put decent numbers up with hitouts/ clearance work without even picking up possessions around the ground.

So say Gawn does punch out 150's the first 3 rounds to start (which is quite feasible looking at his opposition & historical averages v them) x 2 as your capt for those 3 weeks - 300 per week per round/ 900 points first 3 weeks.

Which other SC player do you think has the ability/ realistic potential to bring your team in 300 points per week to start the season?

No idea at this stage , currently have Macrae , Merrett , Jelly , Boak , WOWell & TT in my mids so better do some research on their respective matchups for the first 6 rounds and see how they fare historically.

Dangermouse up forward might be a option as well.

Hopefully the $$$ saved allows me to bolster other players in my team.

Might be hard to get away from starting a rookie nowπŸ˜‚
they need to last longer than the first few rounds though.
In 2012 Giles from GWS was a popular R2 because Redden from Port was talked up as a playing R3. Redden only lasted 3 games IIRC before getting dropped. He came back mid season.
No point setting up a structure like that unless we are sure the R3 stays in their side longer term.

Let's not forget Fullarton $128,900. Went 65 from 80% TOG with BigO, Daniher and Hipwood in the side. Slotted 2 goals of his own and was not relying on HOs (only had 3 for the game) - that could be a double edged sword but given who was playing, it looks like he might be best 22. The fact that he's R/F is the bonus. None of the others (other than Treacy) have FWD status

The thing with going with both Gawn and Grundy is you are likely going to miss one of the better rookies this year due to having room for only one of Hunter/Flynn/Meek (assuming all are named).

Hard to by-pass Gawn and Grundy with their huge VC/C scores, very tough decision. I just know I’m going to pick the wrong option.....

Hopefully clubs will announce debutants Mon - Wed next week.

Seems many are relying on Campbell (M6) , Powell (M7) & the majority of Brockman , Gulden , Downie , Lazarro , Scott , Sharp (maybe not so much) actually being named.

If 50% of them miss it could have a major flow on affect to the rookie ruck situation (if indeed they are all named)

D5 & D6 still look problematic as well if people are not keen on Cox & Butts and instead of going full premo need to look at Cumming , Fantasia , Jiath , the Young brothers or Buckley & Clark for example.

I guess the value is still in the forward lines with ZDI etc.

Interesting week ahead.

OK, so just a quick collation of all the rookie options:

Flynn - Contingent on Pruess - 4-5 months away - Might miss round 1
Meek/Treacy - Contingent on Darcy/Lobb - Test / 6-10 weeks away
Hunter - Contingent on Ryder/Marshall - ??? / 2-4 weeks away
Fullarton - Contingent on McStay? - 3-6 weeks away

First of those teams to play is Fremantle and they should name a side before Collingwood get locked out, so you can switch to a Grundy-less structure if you like what's coming out of Freo and you're brave enough. All the others play Sunday so don't have to be named before either Gawn or Grundy get locked out.

I guess what I'm most worried about (particularly with Hunter) is that if they don't get a run of three games they're not making any money, and they're unlikely to get another look in later on. It's a big gamble. Could be a worthwhile one though!

Still a bit uncertain for me. Doesn't offer much more than others as 2nd ruck yet and won't be able to play the same 3rd tall role McStay was set for. He's very mobile for such a tall player but won't often get away with kicking goals by being out of position and staying down at marking contests he should be involved in.

Funny how we all read the news through our own lens. If you want to start Gawn you see the draw opening up for him. If you want to start a rookie R2 you see more reliable backup and a chance for an extra good cashcow on the bench.

What a great SC spot. Huge stakes in both directions. Entirely plausible we have the two best captaincy options and the three best cash cows all being squeezed into three spots. And lots of permutations around JS issues with all three of those cash cows that makes the situation even harder to read.

The possibility of fewer stoppages with the new rules adds another dimension too.

FWIW I reckon Flynn (Hunter) is an almost irresistible combo. I would be surprised if we saw Marshall before RD5. And unless Hunter really spuds it up I reckon they'd play both of them for at least a bit.

Good luck all with your deliberations!

I'm still iffy on the rookie R2 despite having 3 options on the table.

Flynn – We think he's the man, but who knows. Big leap of faith as none of us have seen him. No idea how bad said rolled ankle is as well.
Meek – Will ruck until Darcy is back? Darcy still touch and go for R1.
Hunter – Will be in the side for a few weeks until Ryder/Marshall are back.

Serious question marks on all of their medium-term job security as @Hondo points out.

I also don't buy into the narrative that Jackson might take considerable CBA's against the 'easier' rucks. Melbourne will be desperate to start the season as well as they possibly can, and I'm near certain that's with the games premier ruckman doing the lions share of work in the middle while still in his prime as a 28 year old.

Might I still have a rookie at R2 come next Thursday? Maybe, but I'd want to hear something solid from GWS that Flynn is their man and that he's fit and raring to go for round 1.
