This was also interesting reading :-

Who gets squeezed out of the backline?

AT times last year Geelong was happy to play with up to eight nominal defenders in the side and those high numbers continued through the pre-season.

Against Essendon, eight – Tom Stewart, Mark Blicavs, Lachie Henderson, Jack Henry, Jake Kolodjashnij, Tom Atkins, Mark O’Connor, Jed Bews – predominantly played in the back half, while Jordan Clark, Zach Tuohy and Zach Guthrie are all able to float through half-back.

Are there enough dashers out of that backline group?

TALK around the league with the new man on the mark rule is of running defenders becoming an attacking weapon.

Clark will spend some time across half-back (and took several kick-ins on Saturday), Stewart is a master of the counter attack and Isaac Smith’s elite running could be useful.

While excellent defenders, the likes of Henry, O’Connor, Kolodjashnij and Bews aren’t known for their attacking flair and will need to show off new abilities.

So rather than Clark having to compete with Duncan/ Smith/ Menegola for a wing position, the cats need him in the side to be that running/ dashing defender that he provides with the new rules whilst Henry, O’Connor, Kolodjashnij and Bews don’t so maybe 1 or 2 them gets squeezed out.

So the Saints are another ruckman down, with Paddy Ryder taking time to spend with family. Set to miss the first few rounds of the season. Paul Hunter anyone?

What's a few in AFL rounds do we know? 3+
"A few" One of the great expressions in the English language. The word itself means a smaller number, but in modern usage it generally means more than that.

In other contexts, particularly explaining yourself to the constabulary / wife / mates, it can mean soooooo much more

"Geez, I've had a few!"

I've always interpreted a few to be greater than a couple, which is 2, so 3+ sounds right

Hunter just became a startable rookie, maybe my season destroying strategy is going to be available just to tempt me into failure

McKernan at least an interesting FWD at 245k as well if he were to start as the lone ruck.

I'd probably like more confidence it would be closer to 5 games, one price rise is hardly worth a rookie spot especially when downgrade targets on the ruck line might be hard to find.

I'm keen to go a Grundy,, Rookie, Rookie ruck line but my worry is that we may have 4 rookie rucks available R1, come round 3 it's probable none of them could be playing.

Judging from what Brett Ratten had to say on AFL 360 tonight, looks like the saints don’t even know how long it will be. Started saying 2 weeks and then by the end it could be 4+. Hunter could make some good cash
All personal issues are different, but looking back to past AFL players with personal issues, it usally takes a very long time to return to playing again. Marshall is the concern to return early and replace Hunter as the main ruckman.
When Marshall returns, do you think Hunter will still be in the team for many weeks, like Ryder and Marshall used to share the ruck role?

That has been the saints structure and it will be either Hunter or Mckernan that make way for Marshall when he comes back but it won’t be both! With Marshall, he will still need a block of work before he comes back. Can’t see him back until round 4. It’s an interesting one because I can see a few teams playing Gawn (given his first 4 rounds and the ruckman he will be up against) and a rookie at R2 simply because of the rookie rucks available that will play and the potential cash generation there.
