(Apologies if this has already been posted)
Rayner went down in the second quarter of Monday night’s AAMI Community Series win over the Gold Coast Suns and had to be helped from the field.
Lions head of football Danny Daly confirmed the news via the club website.
“It is terrible news for Cam and really disappointing for the team,” Daly said.
“He will see a surgeon in the coming weeks and we will then lay out the next steps from there.
“Our thoughts are with Cam and we will wrap our arms around him and continue to support him as he gets on with his recovery.”
DOCKERS CONFIRM INJURY TOLL
Fremantle tall Rory Lobb has avoided the need for surgery on his right knee, but faces at least six weeks on the sidelines after scans confirmed “significant damage to his posterolateral corner”.
Lobb injured the knee during Sunday’s AAMI Community Series loss to West Coast and had to be taken from the ground.
Fremantle footy boss Peter Bell said Lobb will be in a brace for approximately six weeks before the club reassesses the timeline for a return to footy.
Star forward Michael Walters will also miss at least the opening round of the season after scans confirmed he had suffered a hamstring injury during the match.
The club expects to have a return to play date in three to four weeks.
Both Bailey Banfield (syndesmosis) and Mitch Crowden (calf) have also been ruled out of the season-opener, with Banfield in a moonboot for a couple of weeks and Crowden set for a five-to-six week spell.
DOGS MAKE CROZIER CALL AHEAD OF ROUND 1
Western Bulldogs defender Hayden Crozier has been ruled out of the Round 1 clash with Collingwood after suffering a shoulder injury during Monday’s AAMI Community Series win over Melbourne.
Crozier went down in the third quarter and the club has since confirmed the 27-year-old sustained an AC joint injury, which will require surgery.
The Dogs say a return to play timeframe for the former Pick 20 will be determined post-surgery.

DONS UTILITY OUT FOR TWO MONTHS
Essendon utility James Stewart will miss the next eight to 10 weeks of football after scans confirmed a hamstring strain.
Stewart came from the ground in the third quarter against Geelong in the AAMI Community Series before the extent of the injury to the 27-year-old was confirmed.
In better news for Essendon, half-back recruit Nick Hind has been cleared of any major shoulder damage and will be available for Round 1.
TRELOAR MOVES CLOSER TO DEBUT
Western Bulldogs prized recruit Adam Treloar is moving closer to facing Collingwood in Round 1 after playing in a VFL practice match on Monday.
Treloar played two-and-a-half quarters as he returns from a calf injury and racked up 19 disposals and six clearances.
“I’d say health-wise based on today (in the VFL) he probably will be right,” Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge on Monday night, following their AAMI Community Series win against Melbourne.
“Then we’ve just got to make the call on whether we pick him on limited game time.
“He’s done a lot of cross-training, he’s very fit. Because of his experience and his history, he’ll definitely be a consideration if we can get him through training and he’s feeling strong.”
Treloar has battled a calf injury over the summer and didn’t feature in the two senior practice games.
“It was great to get a hit-out before round one… physically I feel great,” Treloar told the club’s website.

“I felt like I could have played another quarter but I was managed with minutes and ended up playing two and a half. I played a bit of mid, back and forward – so I’m not sure where Bevo’s going to play me, but it’s exciting.
“Physically you want to be right and you want to go into games – especially at the start of the year – in good nick.
“Today was a massive indicator to see where we were at physically. There will be a plan put in place for the rest of this week and fingers crossed I get the call up to play.”
SIDEBOTTOM PUSHING FOR ROUND 1
Steele Sidebottom is racing the clock to feature in Round 1 after a calf injury in the club’s loss to Richmond on Friday.
Sidebottom failed to play out the match after leaving the ground with a tight calf during the first term.
Scans revealed a small nick in his calf, leaving him just a 50/50 chance to feature.
ADELAIDE CROWS
Wayne Milera
looked set for a move to the midfield in 2021 before injury struck once again. He ruptured his patella last week and is out indefinitely. Tom Doedee played a SANFL game match rather than a hitout in the AAMI Community Series and will hopefully take to the field in Round 1. Daniel Talia won’t get up in time for the season-opener as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
BRISBANE LIONS
Even with a new start at the Lions, the injury curse continues for Nakia Cockatoo, with a hamstring concern holding him back from a potential debut under Chris Fagan. Speaking on 3AW Sportsday last week, Fagan said Cockatoo had “started running at some really good speed and his body shape and everything has really changed. We’ll just take our time with him and give him the best chance to succeed as the season goes on.” Darcy Gardiner’s knee injury is going to keep him out for at least a month, while Dan McStay will also miss around that length of time. Connor McFayden is still a long way off as he continues to recover from an ACL.
CARLTON
There’s a fair few on the injury list as things stand. Levi Casboult is working to recover from a jarred knee, Mitch McGovern is battling a minor hamstring strain and Eddie Betts should return from a calf niggle, providing he’s selected. Jacob Weitering, Jack Newnes and Harry McKay all copped knocks in the practice game against St Kilda. Caleb Marchbank’s calf issue will keep him out of Round 1, so too for Tom De Koning (back) even though he may return earlier than expected. Charlie Curnow (knee), Brodie Kemp (foot) and Nic Newman (knee) are all indefinite.
COLLINGWOOD
It looked to be a costly night for the Pies in their AAMI Community Series loss to Richmond, with concern around star midfielder Steele Sidebottom. Scans revealed a small nick in his calf and with 10 days until the first game, there is huge doubt over his fitness. Taylor Adams is pushing for Round 1 despite injuring his hamstring at training, with Chris Mayne likely to return from concussion. Young forward Will Kelly won’t be available for at least a month after breaking his collarbone in the match. The Pies had two other minor injury scares with Jordan De Goey and Brayden Maynard leaving the ground, but the pair will be fit for the game against the Western Bulldogs.
ESSENDON
The Bombers won’t be rushing gun forward-midfielder Jake Stringer as he recovers from an Achilles injury suffered over the pre-season. Round 1 seems a stretch given he didn’t feature in either practice match over the last fortnight. Michael Hurley was spotted at the club’s clash with Carlton on crutches and has no time frame on his return, which may not come in 2021. David Zaharakis and Patrick Ambrose both won’t play in the short term.
FREMANTLE
The final pre-season game for the Dockers didn’t go to plan with two crucial best 22 players now ruled out of Round 1. Michael Walters has a hamstring strain while Rory Lobb limped off with a knee injury and is out for an extended period despite not damaging his ACL. Bailey Banfield was spotted on crutches after an ankle injury following contact with Brad Sheppard. The Dockers aren’t confident ruck Sean Darcy will be fit to play in the season-opener, paving the way for Lloyd Meek to ruck. Young stars Adam Cerra and Caleb Serong didn’t play in the practice match after being rested, with the duo certain for the season-opener. Stephen Hill, Griffin Logue and Sam Sturt are also on the injury list.
GEELONG CATS
Luke Dahlhaus
made his return from a groin issue in a VFL hit-out on Saturday morning, but is far from a certain starter for the season-opener given the amount of action he has missed. However, assistant coach Matthew Knights said post-game the club could have played him against Essendon. The Cats will also wait another week to decide whether Mitch Duncan (calf) plays in Round 1 as he increases his training loads. Rhys Stanley didn’t play against Essendon due to concussion, but can play against Adelaide if he passes tests. Fellow tall Esava Ratugolea received a kick in the leg with the Cats cautious over when he is selected. Darcy Fort (knee) and Sam Simpson (shoulder) won’t feature in the early stages of 2021.
GOLD COAST SUNS
The Suns have a relatively healthy list heading into the season. Recruit Rory Atkins is working back from a foot issue so won’t feature in the senior team to start the year. Rory Thompson and Elijah Hollands are both working back from ACL injuries, with the club taking it slow on the latter after his injury during his draft year.
GWS GIANTS
The Giants will be without off-season recruits Jesse Hogan (quad) and Braydon Preuss (shoulder) following injuries during pre-season training. It will force a major change in the club’s ruck department, as well as opening the door for a number youngsters close to goal. Lachie Whitfield is uncertain on his return date, which could well drag out until the middle of the year over a liver issue. Phil Davis didn’t play in the AAMI Community Series but has trained strongly and should play in Round 1.

HAWTHORN
Hawthorn is certain to be without a number of stars for the start of the season with plenty of doubt over the fitness of Chad Wingard (calf) and Tom Mitchell (shoulder). While the pair are yet to be officially ruled out, there is uncertainty of their fitness after not featuring in the pre-season competition. Given their past injury issues, the Hawks won’t be rushing either for the season-opener. Jack Scrimshaw has been on light duties with bone bruising but remains in the mix. Jack Gunston will be out for an extended period after surgery on his back, with trio Seamus Mitchell, Jack Saunders and James Sicily unlikely until mid-year.
MELBOURNE
Jay Lockhart
was forced to undergo surgery after a testicular injury in the club’s loss to the Western Bulldogs on Monday afternoon. Lockhart headed to hospital in the early stages of the game after a knock and won’t feature in the season-opener. Star Jack Viney’s foot hasn’t recovered in time to make him available for Round 1 clash’s with Fremantle, with the Demons also missing crucial forwards Sam Weideman and Ben Brown. Aaron Nietschke will miss the entire year after his third ACL rupture.
NORTH MELBOURNE
The Roos will give Jed Anderson, Trent Dumont and Jared Polec until closer to Round 1 to decide whether they will be fit for selection after soft tissue issues. Youngster Aiden Bonar won’t be in action with a calf injury, while Matt McGuiness’ finger blow will keep him out for a month. Tall Charlie Comben isn’t likely to feature until the middle of the year after a leg injury.
PORT ADELAIDE
The Power finally decided to put Connor Rozee into surgery after receiving advice from a foot specialist in Sydney. Despite playing in the club’s practice match against Adelaide, Rozee needs surgery to avoid more issues throughout the 2021 year. He is expected to be out for at least a month as he recovers from surgery. Sam Powell-Pepper is one of the other few on the Port injury list, with a broken bone in his finger set to rule him out for the first game.
RICHMOND
The Tigers will have all of their premiership 22 available for Round 1, except for defender Bachar Houli. The three-time premiership player suffered the injury against Geelong and is still working back to full fitness. Dion Prestia is fit to play despite a hamstring strain at training, with Tom Lynch (toe) available despite not featuring against Collingwood. Ivan Soldo and Noah Cumberland are both long-term prospects as they recover from ACL injuries.
ST KILDA
Brett Ratten’s side certainly won’t be at full strength in the early stages of 2021 due to a growing injury list. It was bad to worse for veteran defender James Frawley, with scans revealing he would need 10 weeks on the sideline due to a hamstring injury suffered in the win over Carlton on Thursday. He will be joined out of the team with Rowan Marshall and Jarryn Geary, with the latter unlikely to feature until around Round 4. Dan Hannebery is touch and go after a soft tissue setback, with the Saints likely to be cautious. The news does slightly get better with Zak Jones right to play after missing the practice match. Ryan Byrnes (hamstring) is out for 10 weeks, while Ben Paton (broken leg) won’t feature this season.
SYDNEY SWANS
Sydney has one of the slimmest injury lists across the competition, but it is headlined by one of the biggest stars. Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin has pushed for Round 1 selection but won’t be picked, with the club wanting to be cautious after a calf setback during the pre-season. Sam Naismith also features on the injury list with the ruck working back from an ACL blow.
WEST COAST EAGLES
The Eagles are expecting stars Josh Kennedy and Tim Kelly to be available for Round 1 despite battling pre-season niggles, with match simulation ahead of the first game set to decide the outcome. Zac Langdon suffered a concussion in the win over Fremantle, but could still feature in the first match. Elliot Yeo (groin) seems to be at least a month away from AFL action, while a knee injury will keep Mark Hutchings out indefinitely.
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Adam Treloar
appears right to go for Round 1 after featuring in the club’s reserves hitout on Monday. The ex-Pie racked up the ball with ease and will be fine to play his former side as long as he pulls up well. Aaron Naughton suffered a bruised elbow on Monday but is fit for Round 1, but a shoulder injury will rule out Hayden Crozier. Easton Wood is back at training after a niggle in the pre-season and is working his way back to full fitness. Toby McLean and Riley Garcia are coming back from bad knee injuries and won’t be seen until the latter stages of 2021.

Melbourne’s Steven May must have a smooth recovery from “mild concussion” symptoms if he’s to feature in his club’s Round 1 clash, with the gun key defender to be assessed under the AFL’s new protocols.
May copped contact to his head during a fourth-quarter marking contest in his side's AAMI Community Series loss to the Western Bulldogs on Monday.
The 29-year-old remained on the Marvel Stadium turf for a while before being helped off the field by the Demons’ medical staff.

Melbourne on Wednesday confirmed had sustained a “mild concussion” and would be assessed under the new concussion protocols, which state the earliest a player can return to play post-concussion is on the 12th day.\

May’s knock occurred on March 8 — and Melbourne’s Round 1 clash against Fremantle is on March 20.

“Steven was removed from play on Monday night and found to have mild concussion symptoms,” Melbourne football performance manager Alan Richardson said.
“Pleasingly though, on Tuesday morning Steven presented symptom-free and our medical team will continue to assess Steven each day in the lead up to our Round 1 match.

“We will ensure that every precaution is taken with Steven and a decision on his return to play date will be determined by his recovery.
“In line with the new concussion guidelines, Steven will undertake a graded return to training.”

May was arguably the unluckiest omission from last year’s All-Australian 40-man squad.
Managing to play all 17 games, May developed into an even more versatile key defender, proving hard to beat one-on-one while also providing ample drive out of the defensive 50.
According to the AFL Player Ratings, May was the fifth-best key defender in the league in 2020.

Hunter!!

ST KILDA ruckman Paddy Ryder will miss the start to the season after being granted personal leave away from the club.

Ryder will be absent from the opening rounds to spend time with his family and elders in his community.

AFL FIXTURE Check it out here

It comes after Rowan Marshall was ruled out for the start of the season with a hotspot in his foot.

With both missing the Saints are expected to hand an AFL debut to rookie signing Paul Hunter and a club debut to former Bomber and Crow Shaun McKernan.

"Family and community are a huge part of the culture and connection that we are building at the club," Saints chief operating officer Simon Lethlean said.

"When Paddy said he needed to take some time off for his health and well-being and reconnect with his family and culture, he had our full support to do so."

"2020 was difficult for many families, with border closures and restrictions impacting everyone differently.

"We look forward to Paddy returning after some time way, energised to attack the 2021 season and ready to contribute strongly to our on-field endeavours."

Midfielder Dan Hannebery (calf), defender James Frawley (hamstring), co-captain Jarryn Geary (fractured leg) and recruit Brad Crouch (two-week suspension) will also miss the start to the year.

Speedster Zak Jones (hamstring) is racing the clock after another soft tissue setback.

RE: .........Ryder will be absent from the opening rounds........needed to take some time off for his health and well-being.........We look forward to Paddy returning after some time way............

I'm reading this as Ryder will be away at least 2 rounds minimum, but it may be longer, which gives Cash Cow Hunter a bit of time to make some money. Also, the longer Ryder is away, the more time he will need to build up his fitness again.
So Hunter looks like the better choice for R3 between Meek and Flynn (if you have Gawn and Grundy).

I think this will be a pivotal decision for a lot of coaches. Playing Devils advocate we have Darcy which should return early on from all reports (Meek $$$ generation is at question), Flynn by all accounts has more of a go at it but has the Leon Cameron factor. From memory he used Mummy several times last year so how confident are we that he'll have a good stint at it? With Hunter and this recent news does he not have more worries that he has Ryder and Marshall who could be due back at any time??

I know its a how long is a piece of string question/comment but I see maybe Flynn having more "opportunity" than Hunter and therefore generate more $$$. Just my 2c....

Yeah, job security is important. It's good they play each other late in the 1st round, may have more info then to make a decision.
Looks like both have tough early games.

Thanks all for the debate. I agree that, for me, the biggest concern is the issue of DEF rookies, and not getting a look at them all before the round commences.

Forgive me however, but I think I'm missing something here. We can't really be comparing Williams to ANY other premuim DEF option, as it's all about where you spend the money. Williams is less than $460k, but people are banking on him being value for money. If you replace him with someone at a similar price, you're likely picking someone who will score, say, 5ppg worse. Alternatively, if you replace him with someone you think will score similar, you'll likely be paying, say, $50k more ... $50k that you have to find from somewhere else, which could mean downgrading a top-tier premium / rookie to a standard premium / rookie.

In the end, if he scores better than he's priced (even taking into account that potential 50pt loss), then wouldn't he still be considered an advantage of sorts?
You're losing a chunk of that value though when he's dropping effectively 3ppg off his average compared to those playing 22.

He's being picked in place of another premium, he has no successful end game that isn't a keeper so you really need to compare to the field. There's a lot of guys in his price range with cases, Rich, Dawson, Houston, Witherden, McEvoy, Bowes, DBJ, Williams and Clark all come to mind and then you've got the more expensive guys who could also improve from their starting points.

He can work but you'd want to believe firmly he's an elite pick to justify it, imo. Especially given his durability, be nothing worse than him getting injured after round 1 at training for example. I think you just take the premium score, the only real exception to me is when a rookie goes ballistic and you need a donut but he's not offering that unfortunately.

I think a large part of it is how highly I rate the defender options this year that I don't think there is the need to throw away a premium score for Williams, he just doesn't have any indicator that he's in a different class to me and if he is you can be alongside everyone else chasing him as opposed to being all on your lonesome if he flounders.

yes, but who to replace him with at around that price point? - oops kind of wrong thread - guessing one of the WA lads
