Max King will miss the opening round of the season due to a concussion.
King was struck in the head by a golf ball on Thursday afternoon.
In line with the AFL’s latest concussion protocols, King will be mandated to spend a minimum of 12 days on the sidelines.

Just when you thought Valente kicking himself in the calf was the craziest injury story we have a golf ball concussion for the last second challenge.

@Professor

Do you have the confirmation on Nicholas Murray injury ?

Only caught the end of it on the News , rolled ankle I think they said.
Confirmed it was Murray.

Rolled his ankle at training , based on the vision of him walking , I have more chance of playing.

Might depend on how many jabs they give him.

Rookie Docker Josh Treacy’s AFL debut is set to be delayed, with the Round 1 bolter facing a stint on the sidelines after being offered a three-week ban for an incident in a WAFL practice game.

Fremantle released a statement on Monday night confirming Treacy had been suspended by the WAFL’s match review panel for a high tackle during Peel Thunder’s pre-season clash with Perth on Saturday.

Treacy was charged with striking Perth’s Brady Grey — an incident that was classified as intentional, high contact and medium impact.

The incident carries a three-week suspension, but Treacy can escape with a two-game ban if he accepts the penalty with an early plea.

Fremantle has until 3pm Tuesday to decide if it will appeal the decision. But if unsuccessful, Treacy’s suspension would lift to three games.

The ban to Treacy, who was firming for an opening-round debut against Melbourne at the MCG after a promising pre-season, looms as a horror outcome for the Dockers, who are already missing ruck-forward Rory Lobb (knee). Ruckman Sean Darcy (knee) is also no certainty to face the Demons.

Speaking on Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight last week, Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said Treacy – a nimble 193cm forward that’s ferocious at the footy with great hands and an efficient kick — was in the Round 1 mix.

“We’ve been rapt with what big Josh Treacy has been doing for us as a first-year rookie. He’s ready and got a body for AFL footy, so we just need to weigh up all those options and see what gives us the best balance,” Longmuir said.

(This really doesn't sound good)
GIANTS star Lachie Whitfield will miss the club's opening round against St Kilda and has no firm timetable on a return from his liver laceration.

In his first interview since suffering the injury in early February, Whitfield has spoken of the nine nights he spent in hospital and the trouble he still has doing most forms of exercise.

"You do a whole pre-season ready to go for round one and I won't be playing round one now," Whitfield told AFL.com.au.

"I can't do much exercise at all because the liver is inflamed, swollen up, which has then pushed up my right lung from where it should be.

"Breathing is pretty hard to do, especially through exercise.

"I've tried a fair bit of running and I'm not fully agreeing with that at the minute.

"I just need the liver to shrink in size, so the lung can cope with it all."

Whitfield sustained the injury in a training mishap four weeks ago and initially thought it was a rib problem.

He said the pain was not too bad, but after some difficulty breathing the following day, got scanned and found the real culprit.

"I got the scan and was told there was a little bleed in there," he said.

"Sometimes if the bleed is miniature you can avoid hospital, but the pain continued and … I ended up spending nine nights in hospital.

"It was a bit worse than we first thought."

It's now just a matter of waiting. Waiting for the liver to shrink, waiting for the lung to move back into the right spot and waiting for blood to circulate right through the body again.

There is nothing the former All-Australian defender can do to rehabilitate.

Unable to exercise, aside from some small bouts on the bike and the occasional 'touch' session, Whitfield has lost a "fair chunk of weight".

The 26-year-old said it was frustrating not having any control over his recovery time.

"I feel healthy in the mind but unhealthy in the body at the moment.

"It's a week-to-week scenario.

"Speaking to the specialists, some people have done it in a bit over a month, some have taken three months, it just depends how quickly mine decides to shrink.

"Injuries are part of everyone's career and I've had my fair share.

"Injuries like this that are quite rare, and you don't know how to handle them.

"Physically right now, I feel good, I feel like I could go out there and compete, but as soon as you get moving your body changes its mind and that's the frustrating part.

"There's no exact date I'll return, it's just wait and see."

AFL CHIEF executive Gillon McLachlan has hinted the League will introduce a concussion substitute just two days out from the start of the 2021 season.

McLachlan said an announcement would be made on Tuesday morning regarding the potential rule that would most likely see a 23rd player named to a team's squad but only used in the event a teammate suffered a concussion during the game.

"I think there'll be a decision or an announcement in the morning," McLachlan told Fox Footy's AFL 360.

"There's a lot of stakeholder management to work through, directionally, (but) this is what I'd say:

"This is something that'll have no impact on the game, the rules.

"It's a health and safety possibility that I think makes sense if the clubs and coaches want to support it."

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan speaks to Damian Barrett
McLachlan indicated the discussions were still ongoing amid deliberations over whether a substitution would be a general medical substitution, rather than just for concussions.

"That's why we're still discussing it, because I think that medical aspect rather than just concussions, is where this might go," McLachlan said.

"I think that's what Steve Hocking's working through at the moment."

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said he expected the concussion substitute rule to be confirmed on Tuesday but hoped it would instead be a medical substitute along with potential flexibility over which emergency to use rather than a set substitute.

"To get a concussion sub and then a guy breaks his leg four minutes later - why shouldn't you be able to use the sub for that reason also?" Hardwick also told AFL 360.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson told SEN on Monday morning the coaches were "nearly unanimous" in pushing for the concussion substitute, while GWS counterpart Leon Cameron also publicly backed it.

The AFL previously tightened its concussion protocols in January, with players now ruled out for 12 days after suffering concussions.

Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin also threw his support behind a concussion substitute plan.

"It's important that we protect the players and make sure that they don't feel like they're letting teammates down if they don't play," Cotchin said.

"With the education that's around it and the way it typically impacts you, not just now but also down the track in your life.

"I think we're aware of how significant concussion can be.

"We just want to make sure that we create a really safe environment for players to play."

Clarkson suggested the substitute player could be restricted to under-21s to avoid coaches bringing on experienced players for tactical reasons, while Sydney counterpart John Longmire flagged including slightly older players with minimal senior experience.

Wonder if Briggs will come in now. Would leave Himmelberg and Finlayson as the two forwards who would need to back up ruck. Can't remember if Keefe got injuried or not.
I think I heard yesterday that Jesse Hogan was fit to go, so it might be a case of whether they want to through him straight in or not.
