Final Team:

D: Lloyd, Laird, Daniel, Stewart, Short, Docherty, (Koschitzke, Highmore*)
M: Neale, Oliver, Macrae, Cripps, Powell, Sharp, Berry, Gulden, (Jordon*, Brockman, McNeil)
R: Gawn (C), Grundy (V), (Flynn*)
F: Dunkley, Campbell, Warner, Fullaton, Bergman, Scott (Jones*, Rowe)

Score: 1941
Rank: 40302

Heroes: Whole defence line; very solid effort, Oliver, Macrae, GULDEN, Jordon, Rowe, Dunkley, FLYNN.
Villains: Gawn, Neale, Grundy
Trades: None planned.

Comments: My worst Round 1 score ever, and second worst starting rank. Didn't even hit 2k which I try to have as a minimum outside of bye rounds. Despite all this though, I don't think I've ever been happier with a starting side. I would have preferred a more balanced lineup but with rookies falling the way they did and rolling team announcements, I think I did the best I could whilst remaining true to my core desires for my overall lineup. Rookie roulette can go in any direction and my worst performers are the best Supercoach scorers of the past 3 seasons so I'm feeling very optimistic that I'll bounce back next round. I avoided picking any midpricers and I'm fine with that decision. Ziebell probably scores a lot but it is what it is; I'll back my strategy in over the long term and if it fails, I did my own thing.

Score: 2,128
Rank: 3,519
Heroes: Laird, Daniel, Stewart, Short, Clark, Macrae, Sam Walsh, Taranto, Dusty, Dunkley, Ziebell, Warner Rowe
Villains: Campbell, Powell, me putting Gulden on the bench, Gawn C, Grundy, Daniher.
Comments: Pretty happy with the team on the whole, most of the players did quite well and seem to be decent picks. It was a good start to the year and my best in a few years, certainly better after R1 last year when I was ranked 47K.

Taranto is a good choice, I believe at his price, even though he did shank a few kicks. I did leave a lot of points on my bench, but the R1 rookie scores tend to be unpredictable and up to the SC gods, so I'm not mad, just a bit disappointed that I swapped Scott on field for Gulden on about Tuesday. Not having Danger, Neale or Rowell did help.

Flynn on field and running a Hunter/Meek on the bench or might have been the smarter move, but it's hard to know at this stage and time will tell. Grawndy has looked like a mistake in round 1 in 2019 and 2020 as well but turned out not to be. In any case I'm happy with the side and that's my only true big query. Daniher is also on watch after that score, as well as the FWD bench rookies.

Cheers to everyone for the feedback and advice and all the best for next week!

Final Team

Def: Lloyd, Laird, Short, Fantasia, Clark, Highmore (Koschitzke, Sharp)
Mid: Neale (vc), Bontempelli, Merrett, Kelly (c), Cripps, Taranto, Campbell, Powell (Berry, Gulden, Oea)
Ruc: Grundy, Flynn (Meek)
Fwd: Dangerfield, Martin, Ziebell, Daniher, Impey, Bergman (Warner, Scott)

Score: 2,030
Rank: 16,524

Heroes: Martin, Flynn, Ziebell, Fantasia, Taranto after half time.

Villians: Grundy, Neale, Bergman’s ratio, Bont for being the only premium Dogs mid that didn’t ton-up.

Trades: Danger to Dunkley or a premium defender, possibly Daniher or Impey out as well.

Comments: Pretty happy overall considering a pretty iffy Saturday evening.

Made a late call to trade Gawn down to Meek and use the money elsewhere. A decent start, but plenty of footy still to come. Happy to hold Grundy for the time being, think he and Gawn are a good chance to be the top two again.

Reasonably happy with the team overall, and glad SC is back!

R: Grundy, O’Brien (Flynn)
F: Dangerfield, Butters, Ziebell, Daniher, O Henry, Treacy (Rowe, Campbell)

Zeroes: Grundy (70), ROB (55), Henry (9)
Comments:

Flynn & Rowe on the bench, traded in A.Fyfe to get Gulden’s score.

Rookies who scored in the 50-60 range – Scott, Butts, Campbell, Berry, Sharp, Highmore

Will see how the Danger story plays out, Danger -> Titch on the cards.

May also have to do something about O Henry, will give him another week if he doesn’t get dropped.

D: Laird, Ridley, Daniel, Short, Clark, Sharp // Kozi*, Highmore
M: Neale, Macrae, Merrett, Cripps, Walsh, Taranto, Campbell, Powell // Gulden, Berry, Scott*
R: Gawn, Flynn // Meek
F: Dunkley, Z Bailey, Ziebell, Daniher, Cahill, Warner // Rowe*, Bergman

Score: 2078
Rank: 8364
"Lost" points: Gawn C 50, Def 0, Mid 86, Ruc 0, Fwd 67 = Total 203

Heroes: Ridley, Walsh, Flynn, Ziebell, Dunkley
Villians: Neale, Bailey, Cahill, Gawn, my huge points loss on the bench
Trades: Ideally none

Comments:
Overall I'm surprised at how good my ranking is after that score. I avoided the Danger and Rowell issues, JS for Bergman and Sharp is probably the only thing to watch out for this week.

My big risk on Bailey hasn't paid off yet, I'm hoping he'll calm down a bit next game. Def lineup's a bit cookie cutter and Bowes who was in my team for a fair while has already cost me. However he does play for GC so a hot start doesn't mean much. Neale will be a headache if he has another down game at Geelong, Cripps and Taranto could both be a bit too mid 8-ish if Cripps continues to struggle to run out games. Gawn remains a huge question mark, if he and Neale can't pull something out next week it becomes a huge concern owning top priced players who might not produce C worthy scores. Doubly so if the more even spread of scores continues for all players. Daniher isn't a problem yet, he'll have those scores. Unless the Lions have a shocking start a big one will come soon if he keeps drawing the ball. His score wouldn't have even been in that concerning range if Fullarton had the awareness to shepherd through a shot that was on line.

Villians: Duggan (62), Neale (77), Grundy (70), Fullarton (38)

Comments: Overall I am happy with my team as a starting point. Not sure how many corrections I want to make straight away, I usually go hard on trades early and end up regretting it

R: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)
F: Dunkley, Phillips, Caldwell, Ziebell, Daniher, Warner (Rowe, Bergman)

Score: 2020 - hindsight and all
Rank: 18,710 (not too bad)
"Lost" points: Capt - I was never going to captain anyone else except for neil, so I actually gained points there. , Bench picks: Def 9, Mid 10, Ruck 70, Fwd 50 = Total 139, but that's a bit silly - I was never going to go Flynn over Gawndy and I was never going to go Rowe over Daniher.

Heroes: D - Laird, Daniel, Stewart, Short M - Macrae, Taranto, Gulden, R - Flynn but on bench grr, F - Dunkley, Ziebell, Rowe but on bench.
Villians: Neale (77), Steele (91), Grundy (70), Gawn (93), Daniher (54)
Trades: probably none - need to think about the benefit of removing a ruck now a week ahead v that ruck scoring 130+ next week. I mean, which one would drive me less insane - probably the first as it is more sensible... but only just

Edit: oops - didn't edit my backline
Comments: Hello future me, I see you are reading this post trying to remember where it all went wrong to see if you can garner any wisdom.

Start taking some notes during preseason and save them this time ya duffer!

Rucks - I am super tempted to either go Gawn to rookie this week and Daniher to Martin and follow up with the other ruck next week and upgrade Brockman or whoever else is dropped... but guess I should be less hasty this season as we no longer have so many trades (sigh). Also super tempted to drop Gawndy for two cheaper rucks

Villians: Gawn, Grundy, Neale, Cripps, Lloyd Danger
Trades: McNeil to Jordon and Danger to ???

Comments:

DEF: 8/10
I had almost 166k in cash left to spend and decided to do Stewart to Lloyd late on Saturday and it backfired. One round of data but still annoying. Should have kept my cash. Ridley a somewhat great POD at 12% ownership. Daniel and Laird not the best but serviceable. Hopefully Jordan Clark keeps up his scoring.

MID: 4/10
Neale God awful but backing him to turn it around. Macrae most likely my new perma captain since grawndy combo failing. Cripps great forst half but faded... hoping he does better. Dunkley in the mids was great... Treloar with just 2 CBAs was great for Dunks. Berry to bench and Gulden onfield was done 10mins beforw the adelaide game :D

RUC: 1/10
Gonna be very harsh here... Grawndy combo a failure. Normally when I go the different option it fails me like every other year especially last year. Think there has only ever been 1 year where I get this line right. Flynn firming as my R2 if one of the other 2 doesn't start scoring at high levels. Rookie rucks were the way to go.

FWD: 6/10
Scott screwing Danger and parking him fwd... np wonder he got angry. Most likely a trade looming. Dusty what a beautiful beast, never left my side. Ziebell such a bargain and wouldn't mind keeping him at F6 the way the defenders have been scoring. Daniher was barely in my team all preseason and one I mainly got due to FOMO. Wanted him to be suspended so that I had a reason go trade him out but guess he'll now be a hold. Bergman over Rowe was sad.

Score: 2,005

"Lost" points: Capt 25, Bench picks: Def 0, Mid 86, Ruck 70, Fwd 67 = Total 248

Heroes: Taranto, Macrae, Ziebell, Dusty, Dunkley, Stewart
Villians: Duggan, Grundy, Cahill
Trades: Not sure yet, but one of Duggan/Cahill/Grundy likely to go

Comments: Not happy already, did a slight re-structure changing Danger, Heppell and Young for Duggan (best I could afford), Taranto and Phillips. Lost a stack of points on rookies (both Gulden and Rowe on pune with no E) Taranto and Phillips were wins, but not Duggan... Need to take a deep breath. I think my starting side was OK, with the exception of Duggan (who looked OK at half time, but was dreadfull after that).

I think I need to fix one of Duggan/Grundy/Cahill/Dow this week to allow for 2 other possible fixes next week.

Had Macrae VC all week, late change to Grundy was a fail, will stick with Macrae from now on until the ruck situation clears up.

I don't necessarily think the 2 rookie ruck (Meek or Hunter as R3) was the way to go, but I do think Flynn needs to be on ground, may give it another week, but dont want to be left having to deal with Duggan/Grundy/Cahill/Dow next week. So if Jordan makes the team with Viney back may just deal with Cahill to Jordan this week and re-assess the Grundy/Gawn situation with Duggan next week.

Score: 2,189

Heroes: Ridley, Oliver, Flynn, Ziebell
Villains: Cripps, Grundy (C), De Goey, Bergman
Trades: None

Comments: Clearly my best start to a Supercoach season, was ranked 17k last year and finished inside the top 1,000 so hopefully can build upon this. Very happy with my defenders and midfielders. Cripps wasn't an ideal start to the year but I'll back him in to improve from hear. Ruck line was saved by Flynn's beastly performance, weather definitely helped him so won't be expecting anything close to that on a weekly basis. Real mixed bag in the forwards. Was good to see Dunkley largely unaffected by Treloar for now and to see Ziebell do so well. unfortunately Bergman and Brockman really struggled and I left some points behind by not fielding Rowe. Phillips was ok but De Goey is a real worry for me. Didn't have the midfield minutes I was expecting. Will watch him again this week and hopefully he can bounce back.

"Lost" points: Capt 25, Bench picks: Def 0, Mid 83, Fwd 48 = Total 156

Heroes: Walsh, Flynn, Ziebell the standouts.
Villians: JKelly C, Grundy the only real disappointments
Trades: Probably none. Will flick Danger to mids, so I have a loophole on both Fwd and Mid lines this week.

Comments: Pretty happy overall. To be honest, not too much to talk about in either the heroes or villains column, really only Grundy. I think I've got to give Grundy another week - mostly because there's no logical trade.

One thing I would say, is that for the people saying "People holding Grundy and Gawn are about to lose a stack of cash if they don't trade" - that's really not the case at all. You only lose cash once you've sold the asset.... if Grundy goes down by $80k then goes back up to his start price, you haven't 'lost' any money at all. People who don't have them now will have the chance to buy them cheaper - yes. But if you hold them for the season, you haven't really done your dough unless they're a flop and you trade them out.

I can't see any glaring corrective trades needed. Fine with how Docherty went. Cripps showed plenty. If everyone is trading Danger out, I'll probably hold.

Final Team

LLOYD , LAIRD , DANIEL , STEWART , Fantasia , Highmore / Koschitze , Sharp

MACRAE , MERRETT , KELLY , BOAK , CRIPPS , Berry , Scott , Powell / Gulden , McNeil , A Fyfe

Flynn , Hunter / Meek

DANGERFIELD , DUNKLEY , MARTIN , ZORKO , Ziebell , Campbell / Fullarton , Rowe

Already mentioned what could've been if I fielded Gulden & Rowe , I might get over it one day 😀

Heroes : Me

Stubbornly stuck to my 3 rookie ruck line up (based on the scoring I actually now think this was the wrong approach to take , the joys of hindsight)

Hunter & Meek now could cause major problems very quickly.

Dangers suspension possibly allows a cash injection for a short term (Martin or Hickey) solution if required for Round 3.

It did allow me to get 13 "real" premiums though , at one stage I had H Clark , Duggan , Rowell , Taranto all their + Daniher , Dow & Impey.

Strangely enough I always thought I would end up with Heeney or Ziebell at F1 , Heeney missed the cut and Ziebell was F5.

Just goes to show how pointless it is locking in structures/teams weeks in advance before Round 1 teams are announced.

Was strong on Fantasia all pre season.

Did mean I fielded 7 rookies which still could be too many.

Don't have Jordon or Warner , probably won't chase Jetta or McDonald

Would actually like to hold Dangermouse but know I need $$$ if I need to fix Hunter/Meek ASAP , maybe Cripps is the sacrificial lamb 🤔

Be a lot easier with concrete news about Darcy , Marshall , McStay & Ryder.

Certainly a great (and completely new) feeling starting the competition with a high score.

Hopefully it continues.

Is this a re-run of the 8 rookie midfield structure? Will be interesting to see how it goes this year.

R: Flynn, Hunter (Meek)

Score: 2279
Rank: 106

"Lost" points: Zerret C (instead of Dusty) 53, Def 0, Mid 3, Ruc 0, Fwd 73 = Total 126
(As Herbie said, and I can hardly believe it - but with a different C choice and Rowe off the bench I'd be leading the whole thing)

Heroes: Ridley, Oliver, Gulden, Flynn, Ziebell, Dusty
Villians: Dangerfield you goose
Trades: Danger to someone. Wait another week to see if we need rookie corrections.

Comments:
Well that went better than expected! Followed a quite deliberate strategy of trying to park my money in safe, reliable places where the scoring would be solid and the risk would be low: big spend in def and mids and all rookie rucks. It worked for one week and I'm hoping that Meek can get up closer towards 60s and 70s when he doesn't have to worry about Gawn and cover what looks like the real danger spot at R2.

Def: 5 x $500k premos for five 100s. Win. Jordan Clark bagging 80 at D6. Win. Enough said.
Mid: 5 x $600k premos averaged me 107. Solid but not really remarkable - Jelly and Zerret could both have kicked on to huge scores and didn't but still ended up near enough 100, which is why I picked them. Ditto Bont who had a mistake riddled night and still scored 92. Took Gulden by swapping out Powell for A Fyfe.
Ruck: 180 points on field for $220k? Thank you sir. Pity the cash gen is all lumped in one place: Hunter might become a bit of a liability
Fwd: Danger, Dunkley, Dusty and Ziebell means I wasn't trying to make nearly-there picks work and delivered a solid line. And the rookies look ok (ish).

F: Danger, Phillips, Ziebell, Daniher, Warner, Brockman, // Jones*, Rowe

Heroes: Flynn (140), Ridley (125), Oliver (122), Walsh (122), Macrae (118), Stewart (113), Ziebell (113), Daniel (107).
Villians: Grundy, Merrett and Cripps (no 2nd half); having Gulden and Rowe on the bench.
Trades: Probably no trades, expect Danger to get 2w and I will hold him. Will look at Jordan for Rd3 correction.

Comments: I'm surprised I ended up with 2100 was expecting 2000 with Ziebel, Flynn and Powell to play on Sunday. So very happy. Think my overall structure is good, worried about my fwds but have cash for corrections if needed 150K in the bank. Only tinkering was Dunkley to Phillips. Was hoping to see Phillips get more ball on the outside from Mitchell. Instead Mitchell was often the outside receiver very similar to McRae.

Daniher will remain an up and down scorer and more than likely will bust out a 5 goal game for Brisbane at 130-140 score. Zeibell role looks like scoring consistently above 90+ which probably makes him F6 at worst.

Not surprised by McDonald the kid is a gun. Swans will be potent with Buddy and Logan on the field. Hard to pay up for McDonald as first year KPF. McGrath may benefit from new rules and score well. Cannot see any reason Neale doesn't score well going forward just thought he was max priced and a little underdone for start of the season.

Captain choices will remain tough by the look of it. Oliver, McRae, Merrett and possibly Grundy will be my go to options most weeks.

Score: 2006
Rank: 21k

"Lost" points: Gulden bench, fielded Bergman, C Gawn, no Jordon or Dusty

Heroes: Oliver, Macrae, Dunkley, Ziebell. Another year of being carried by Dogs mids coming up.
Villians: Just rucks, Bergman and Steele/Lloyd second halves.
Trades: McNeil to Jordon. Even if McNeils holds spot I'm too weak at M8.

Comments:
Pretty poor week scoring wise but ok with the team, I'll take getting away with one correction, will hold Bergman even if dropped. Weak at D6, in hindsight should have gone a 5th defender + Young over a 600k mid and Butts at D7. Playing for long term so overall cash gen looking great and most guys I paid up for should be top 10 in their position and are durable. Still iffy on Phillips and need Atkins to not give away 5 frees, but feel ok with them given price and what I saw.

No trades this week although Grundy on extreme short notice. If he flops this week he will be traded to Dunkley and access cash.

*Just realised team pic is after moving Rowe and Gulden onto the field for Warner and Sharp

Score: 1,999
Rank: 23,640
"Lost" points: Gawn captain and Rowe & Gulden on the bench

Heroes: Walsh, Ziebell.
Villians: Dow, Gawn, Grundy, Daniher, Impey.
Trades: Probably Danger to Titch if he gets 3+, otherwise none.

Comments: Overall pretty happy. If I nailed rookie roulette it would have been a great round. Happy with all my premiums but will have to move Danger on if he gets 3+. If Dow, Daniher, Impey stink it up again and there is a rookie I've missed then I'll look to do that trade next week.
