I suppose it depends whether it's an ongoing issue like OP or tendonitis that will only go away after protracted rest (and that's not 100% certain either). That or he's got a chronic or degenerative issue.
I doubt they'd do that while he continues to play. I have no info, but say it was a shoulder... you'd bet teams would be protecting themselves lining him up all afternoon.
How many injuries can there be that can’t get worse if you keep playing? Plantar fasciitis is the only thing that I can think of and that’s from personal experience.
Chronic tendon injuries would probably need time off and there is a risk you could make it much worse. Groin would explain his lack of explosiveness but again you wouldn’t want to push through with a dodgy groin at the start of the season. Purely speculation of course.
