Hurt Locker: The latest AFL injury news from your club ahead of Round 5
Collingwood will unveil a highly-touted debutant against West Coast to help cover the loss of Taylor Adams, whose injury fate has been revealed.
Finn Macrae’s dominant VFL display against Geelong will see him handed a debut against West Coast as Taylor Adams’ worst knee fears were realised on Monday.
Collingwood onballer Adams will miss up to 10 weeks with a high-grade medial ligament sprain, a bitter blow for the Pies given their 1-3 win-loss record.
But despite losing one of its star clearance players, Collingwood will have only its vice-captain and Jamie Elliott out of its best 22 against a West Coast team missing Elliott Yeo (groin), Shannon Hurn (calf) and Luke Shuey (hamstring).
The Pies yesterday cleared Jordan De Goey (AC joint) and Steele Sidebottom (thumb) to play after scans on Sunday.
De Goey pulled up sore after being tackled and Sidebottom stirred up an old injury, but they will be on the plane to Perth on Thursday morning.
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has promised change after an insipid loss to Greater Western Sydney, but not all of the six players taken in last year’s national draft are ready.
Exciting half forward Ollie Henry played in Round 1 but after a four-possession game is finding form again in the VFL, while explosive midfielder Reef McInnes is only just back from a finger tendon injury.
Beau McCreery will keep his spot in the side after making his debut as the medical sub in Round 3 then playing well against the Giants.
Macrae, taken with the No.19 selection in last year’s draft, will almost certainly make his debut as a highly-efficient midfielder
in the mould of his Western Bulldogs brother Jack.
He made the Under-18 squad for Vic Metro as a bottom-ager while also playing for Xavier College and averaged 16.9 disposals, 3.9 marks and 83 ranking points in seven NAB League games.
He was the standout in the VFL clash against Geelong on Saturday, with Irish defender Mark Keane and Darcy Cameron also in the top three Pies on the ground.
Cameron is expected to come in to help Brodie Grundy tag-team Nic Naitanui after his solid summer form and his strong performance in last year’s elimination final against West Coast.
Wingman Caleb Poulter, the No.30 pick in last year’s draft, has been in strong form but copped a head knock in the contest that required attention.
He was cleared of concussion and played on after being bandaged up, but is not quite ready to debut.
Brayden Sier was subbed off in the loss to GWS after vomiting in the changerooms with gastro, but should be available to take on West Coast.
Collingwood high performance boss Kevin White said Sidebottom had broken his thumb four years ago and stirred up that injury, but had not suffered another fracture.
But Adams, who had averaged 7.8 clearances and 4.5 centre clearances in his four games so far, might not be back until Round 14.
