Carlton could regain a key forward for its crucial clash against Port Adelaide.
Plus a key Docker could be back sooner than expected, while the Eagles could finally unleash their recruit.
Get the latest selection news in AFL Team Whispers!
CARLTON will be without forward Jack Silvagni (shoulder) for its crucial match against Port Adelaide, but could welcome back key forward Mitch McGovern for the game.
After enduring an injury-interrupted pre-season, McGovern has shaken off back and hamstring issues to play the past two VFL practice games.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast on Thursday morning, Carlton coach David Teague said McGovern had “put his hand up” as a possible replacement for Jack Silvagni.

“We’ll see how he goes at training today, but he’ll be right in the mix,” Teague said.

Gun recruit Zac Williams is also expected to be available for selection.

Williams missed the Blues’ Round 4 win over the Suns due to illness and calf interruptions during the week.

But Blues high performance director Andrew Russell said Williams loomed as a likely inclusion to the Power.

“Zac didn’t have a great preparation week last week. He was sick for most of the week, he was a bit tight late in the week so we decided not to play him,” he said.

“He trained today, we expect him to train fully and be available this week.

PORT ADELAIDE will have to find replacements for young gun duo Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma, who suffered significant injury setbacks against Richmond.

Butters underwent ankle surgery on Monday night, while Duursma had been booked in to have the lateral ligament in his knee repaired.

Key forward Todd Marshall could face Carlton after being a late withdrawal from the selected side on Friday night due to an ankle issue. If he does return, ruckman Peter Ladhams is most likely to make way.

It’ll be a different-looking GEELONG team against North Melbourne on Sunday, with Patrick Dangerfield and Gary Rohan to return from suspension and midfielder Brandan Parfitt (hip) likely to be available.

But whether the Cats unleash star recruit Jeremy Cameron for his first game in the blue and white hoops remains uncertain.

Cameron on Monday confirmed on Fox Sports News his desire to face North Melbourne this weekend but said he was “two to three sessions” away from playing. He said he understood if he was held back for one more week.

“I would like to say I’m heading in the right direction,” Cameron said.

“Whether we can cram them (two to three sessions) all into the one week lead up is another question.

“We will have to wait and see. It’s really positive at the moment and ticking along nicely.”

Small forward Luke Dahlhaus is in danger of losing his spot after his quiet start to 2021. He’s averaged a career-low 10 disposals so far this season.

NORTH MELBOURNE is likely to make two forced changes for Sunday’s clash against the Cats after setbacks for Luke McDonald (pec) and Cam Zurhaar (concussion) against Adelaide.

McDonald’s absence might finally pave the way for recruit Atu Bosenavulagi to play his first game in the blue and white stripes after showing excellent form at VFL level. Although Connor Menadue has also been knocking loudly on the match committee door.

Zurhaar’s replacement could be Josh Walker, who missed the clash with Adelaide due to a hamstring concern. But Tristan Xerri was mighty in the Roos’ VFL win over Port Melbourne, playing 90 per cent ruck but drifting forward to kick three goals. Forward Curtis Taylor returned via the VFL after missing a few games due to concussion and would also be in the mix.

WEST COAST recruit Alex Witherden could finally play his first game for his new club, with the ex-Lion in the mix to face Collingwood.

Witherden, who was traded from Brisbane during the 2020 AFL exchange period, will be in the mix to replace veteran defender Shannon Hurn due to a calf injury.

Eagles spearhead Josh Kennedy on Tuesday nominated Witherden or one-gamer Luke Foley as the most likely candidates to replace Hurn.

“Alex is ready to go, he’s had a great pre-season and really moulded into the group, so exciting if he can get his first game for the club,” Kennedy told 6PR.

“When he’s got the ball in his hands he can really get some drive off half-back exactly like what Shannon does.”

COLLINGWOOD will unleash third debutant this season, with first-round draftee Finlay Macrae to play his first AFL game against West Coast on Friday night.

Macrae, who was taken with Pick 19 in last year’s draft, was told the news on Tuesday, with every Magpies teammate celebrating with him.

The 19-year-old will replace injured vice-captain Taylor Adams, who’ll be sidelined for eight to 10 weeks after an MCL injury against the Giants.

The Magpies could welcome back renowned tagger Levi Greenwood, who flew to Perth earlier this week ahead of the game.

Greenwood, who’s played just one game in 2021, could be earmarked for a run-with role on Eagles star Tim Kelly after he held the midfielder to just 12 disposals in last year’s thrilling one-point elimination final win over West Coast.

Collingwood could also recall ruck-forward Darcy Cameron, who was crucial in the club’s famous 2020 elimination final win over the Eagles as he partnered Brodie Grundy to help curtail Nic Naitanui’s influence.

“That’s a consideration for us,” Pies coach Nathan Buckley said of Cameron’s possible inclusion.

“I don’t think that anyone has found … a way to get above his (Naitanui’s) hand in a centre bounce. Blunting that is half the battle so we will be looking at being better at centre bounce.”

FREMANTLE could welcome back Rory Lobb to its AFL line-up sooner than expected, with the ruckman a chance to play in Sunday’s game against Adelaide.

Lobb was expected to be sidelined for up to 12 weeks after he injured his knee during Fremantle’s AAMI Community Series match against West Coast. But he’s been back running for three weeks after having his brace removed ahead of schedule.

“He is still a chance for this week,” Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir told 7 News Perth.

“He has got to tick a few boxes and get through main training. We will see where it falls for Rory.

“We think someone of his capability has got a chance of coming straight back in. What level he plays at we will decide after he ticks those boxes at main training.”

Longmuir also said the club would have to make a call on whether top-10 draftee Griffin Logue, who’s been sidelined recently due to a hamstring issue, is picked for the AFL side, or whether he takes part in another WAFL game after playing limited minutes for Peel Thunder last week.

ADELAIDE will monitor the progress of Shane McAdam (SC joint) and Brodie Smith (knee) at training this week before making a call on whether they face the Dockers.

SYDNEY could add another young star into its line-up, with emerging midfielder James Rowbottom likely to face the Giants on Saturday.

Swans midfielder Luke Parker said Rowbottom, who’s been sidelined since Round 1 after sustaining a knee injury, would likely be available for selection if he completed training on Wednesday.

Rowbottom could replace star teammate Isaac Heeney, who could miss two to three games after suffering a broken hand against Essendon.

The Swans will also have to find a replacement for star defender Dane Rampe, who this week underwent surgery on a broken finger.

Fellow co-captain Parker nominated Lewis Melican or Kaiden Brand as the most likely Rampe replacements.

The GIANTS might rest Shane Mumford for the Sydney derby, despite the veteran ruckman’s impressive outing against Brodie Grundy and Collingwood.

While Grundy had more disposals (20 disposals to Mumford’s 17) and hit-outs (42 to 17), Mumford finished the game with more clearances (8 to Grundy’s 5) and score involvements (4 to 1), while 38 per cent of Mumford’s hit-outs went to the advantage of a Giants teammate, whereas Grundy’s rate was only 24 per cent.

Mumford stood up in the absence of Matt Flynn, who played the first three games of the season but was rested for the Pies game.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said it would be “a really good discussion” at match committee.

“‘Mummy’ is our ruck coach and player, and he’s not the player that he was a few years ago. If everything went to plan, which it never does, he should only be playing six or seven games, because we really want to develop Flynn and (Kieren) Briggs,” Cameron said.

“It’s not as if we’re just giving young Matty Flynn a game, he’ll deserve to play this weekend, if he gets picked. And so will Shane, but Shane just can’t go back-to-back-to-back three or four weeks in a row.”

Defender Sam Reid should come straight back in serving his two-week ban for a bump on Dockers superstar Nat Fyfe. However Cameron said forward recruit Jesse Hogan was more likely to play another VFL game before being unleashed at AFL level.

The WESTERN BULLDOGS will be without star defender Caleb Daniel due to suspension, but Hayden Crozier looms as his replacement for the club’s clash against the Gold Coast Suns.

Crozier has missed the first four rounds of the season due to the AC joint injury he suffered in the AAMI Community Series against Melbourne.

Bulldogs head of sports medicine Chris Bell said if Crozier completed full training this week, as expected, he’d be available for selection.

GOLD COAST will have to make once forced change the clash against the Bulldogs, with Sean Lemmens to miss due to concussion.

However the Suns are still hopeful gun key defender Charlie Ballard will be fit to play, but a call wouldn’t be made until later in the week.

“Monday he was probably an out,” Suns coach Stuart Dew said. “But he’s come on in leaps and bounds the last couple of days.

“We’ll give it a little bit longer before we decide, but it’s really turned the corner quickly, which is pleasing.”

Dew said Jack Hombsch could be selected to help counter the Dogs’ array of key-position forwards, including Tim English, Aaron Naughton and Josh Bruce.

“We’ve got a bit of a discussion,” he said.

MELBOURNE is likely to call upon Harrison Petty to replace star defender Steven May for Sunday’s clash against Hawthorn.

May is set to miss two to four weeks after copping an accidental elbow from Geelong’s Tom Hawkins, resulting in a fractured right eye socket and a second concussion in five weeks for May.

It means versatile key-position player Petty is likely to play his first game since Round 21, 20

Speaking after Sunday’s win over Geelong, Dees coach Simon Goodwin said Petty would “certainly come into calculations”, while backman Jake Lever said Petty had been “ready for four or five weeks now” to step up after promising VFL form.
HAWTHORN should replace the suspended Mitch Lewis for fellow key forward Jacob Koschitzke for the clash against the Demons, while veteran Shaun Burgoyne will also be considered.

ESSENDON will have the option of selecting Mason Redman for Saturday night’s game against the Brisbane Lions after the defender overcame a hamstring issue.

Redman was subbed out of the Bombers’ win against St Kilda then missed the Round 4 clash with Sydney due to the injury.

But Redman was expected to train fully this week train and be available for selection this weekend.”

BRISBANE is unlikely to make any forced changes, but it could pick Dan McStay in the senior line-up after spending nearly two months on the sidelines with a knee issue.

ST KILDA expects ruckman Rowan Marshall and midfielder Zak Jones to face Richmond on Thursday night after both were named.

Marshall snapped his plantar fascia and played out his return game against the Eagles, with the injury unlikely to be a major long-term concern, while Jones has been plagued by soft tissue injuries recently.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Saints coach Brett Ratten said the plan was for Marshall and Jones to face Richmond, despite coming off a five-day break. However ruckman Paul Hunter is on standby for Marshall, while Luke Dunstan and Ben Long could be called upon if Jones isn’t passed fit to play.

“He (Marshall) is going well. He did a bit (on Tuesday), he’s done a bit again today,” Ratten said.

“He’s doing everything right, so unless something pops up he’ll play.”

RICHMOND has axed youngsters Jack Ross and Will Martyn for its clash with St Kilda.

Small forward Daniel Rioli comes into the 22 after being the club’s medical substitute in the last round, while wingman Kamdyn McIntosh returns after his mandatory concussion break.
Ruckman Callum Coleman-Jones was flagged as a potential inclusion after serving his club-imposed 10-game ban, but was named as an emergency.

"We begin a new era for the VFL in 2021 with a renewed level of optimism and excitement, focusing on delivering fans the highest standard of state league football in Australia at more venues and across multiple channels.

"We are incredibly fortunate to have broadcast partners who share our commitment to expanding the game, and the new broadcast offering to state league competitions is a real boost for the VFL across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland."

Makes the Swan's I50 rate on guys not named Dawson and Lloyd astronomical. Lloyd at 24% and Dawson at 15% as the two main guys and yet the team is at 37%.

Probably because it's going to be a lot quicker play generally if someone else is taking it rather than waiting for those two to get there.

EDIT:

In fact, crunching the numbers on our 52 kick-ins at 37.3% somehow we have 19.4 I50, lets assume it's 19, Lloyd represents 6 and Dawson 3 of those 19, so we have 10 leftover, of course we've had 8 kick-ins from other players so that means we've produced 2 extra I50... or the numbers aren't very good which I think is pretty clear if the percentage results in a .4 decimal outcome
Agree, noticed this as well, numbers dont look to stack up. Expect player numbers may not be right.

Nathan....once again showing no faith in his million dollar ruckman.

Do you think Nathan will play Issac on Darling. Wouldn’t surprise me after last weeks debacle.

do you think Nathan will let Jordan rot away in a deep forward pocket role. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Tonight Could be the last call for Nathan.

Seven (Flynn, Hunter, Meek, Fullarton, Treacy, Campbell (kangas), Sweet) rucks playing by rd 5 that started under $ 155 K and yet still the 3 rookie rucks is coming unstuck. SC Gods really just want set and forget.
And still the majority (automatically assume) think Gawn & Grundy was the right way to start.

Always said we needed 6 rounds to see how the rookies ruck stacked up (just need them to actually play)

The problem is that the issue when doing it was if Flynn got rested and the others were dropped (or in Meek's case, selected purely to keep the largest part of their bench warm) and that has come to fruition. Meek now looks done which means if Flynn doesn't play it's game over for the move and the massive issue of now going down the season ending ruck trade rabbit hole begins.

No idea what I'll gonna do if Flynn doesn't play! Luckily traded Hunter to Hickey, but still got Meek and Flynn, house of sticks getting shakier each day. At least I know if Flynn is named before Eagles game, as my only real move is duggan out, sharp back, waterman in. Use cash for Grundy (not enough for gawn) then watch Reg pump out a 60 against NicNat

Go early on Tracey? He was always the end game target though he ended up playing too early.

If Flynn plays I'm all good, if he doesn't I'm forced into the Meek > Hickey move and then pray Hickey can hold his value well enough to get me to Gawn asap.

Means missing a lot of better value targets but I've lost seasons before playing ruck hopscotch.

North Melb.
Coming into R4 I had Flynn/Meek/Hunter.

Trouble was incoming with Flynn being rested, so I traded Hunter out to move Fullarton to R3 and cover (for a week at least).

Then Meek gets dropped and maybe Fullarton as well, with Flynn potentially also not playing.
Meek to Gawn is locked in so maybe I still cop a donut but the fix is on the way.
Grundy probably in next week and then on we go, status quo.

I have Fullerton as backup in Fwd line for this reason, but that also looks like coming unstuck. Really thought I'd mitigated the risk with 3 rookies to cover one spot. With Tracey on a delayed start, I knew there could be a 4th mitigation. I might still need to use the 4 mitigation! Grrr.

MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin may have solved his big forward dilemma for the Anzac Day Eve battle with Richmond.

Ben Brown made a successful return to footy in the VFL last weekend with three goals, while new teammate Sam Weideman piled on seven goals against Box Hill in his return from a fractured leg.

But Goodwin told reporters on Wednesday the club’s match committee wouldn’t pick both Weideman and Brown in the same team for Saturday night’s clash.

“We’re certainly not going to bring them both back, I’ll give you that as an answer,” Goodwin said.

“The team’s functioning well, we need to be really careful that we don’t adjust too much at once and we keep that chemistry going and keep the balance really strong.

“For one of those guys it’s going to be a little bit longer and we’ll just continue to monitor how our team’s going at AFL level.”
After Goodwin’s press conference, Weideman lined up in the Demons’ ‘A team’ at training, while Brown was part of the ‘B team’, according to AFL Media, suggesting Weideman is more likely to be picked on Friday night.

Fellow forward Bayley Fritsch is meeting with a surgeon to determine his availability after having hand surgery, but the Dees are confident he’ll play.

Mitch Brown’s spot will be under heat despite kicking two goals against Hawthorn, along with Jake Melksham.

In defence, Steven May is expected to be available for the match if he clears concussion protocols and is deemed fit to play after sustaining a fractured eye socket against Geelong in Round 4. He took part in training on Wednesday and looms as the man to replace an unlucky Harrison Petty.

Opponents RICHMOND is unlikely to make any changes to the side, but Jack Ross, last week’s medical sub, is pushing for selection after a 34-disposal effort in the VFL.

Other impressive performers included Callum Coleman-Jones, Patrick Naish and Riley Collier-Dawkins.

Also, Maurice Rioli Jnr is closing on a senior debut, with coach Damien Hardwick suggesting “he’s not as far away as I thought”.
CARLTON could unleash first-round draftee Liam Stocker in the senior team for the first time this year when the Blues face Brisbane on Saturday.

Blues fans have been urging match committee to select Stocker, who was famously taken by Carlton with Pick 19 in the 2018 draft after the club traded up the draft order to snare him.

The 21-year-old might’ve left coach David Teague with no choice but to recall him after he kicked one goal from 38 disposals, 13 marks, 10 intercepts, nine rebound 50s and five inside 50s against Aspley in Round 1 of the VFL.

Stocker played five games for the Blues in 2019 but didn’t register a senior match in 2020 after he left the club’s Queensland-based hub to return to Victoria for personal reasons.
If Stocker comes in, Tom Williamson appears most likely to face the axe.

David Cuningham, who had 28 touches against Aspley, could be another inclusion.

BRISBANE will be sweating on the fitness of midfielder Jarrod Berry (adductor) and ruckman Oscar McInerney (ankle) ahead of Saturday’s match against Carlton.

Both Berry and McInerney were on light duties at training earlier this week, with the duo set to undergo fitness tests in the coming days to determine their availability.

ADELAIDE could unleash Elliott Himmelberg for his first senior game of 2021 when it takes on Hawthorn after the forward’s encouraging display in the SANFL.

Himmelberg booted 1.2 from 15 disposals and 10 marks in the Crows’ SANFL clash against Woodville-West Torrens.

He could be brought in to replace fellow forward-ruck Billy Frampton, who finished goalless against the Dockers for the fourth consecutive game.

The Crows could also rest forward Shane McAdam, who had just four disposals coming off an injury the week before.

HAWTHORN will welcome back Mitch Lewis for Sunday’s clash with Adelaide after he key forward served his one-game suspension.

Whether Lewis is a straight swap for Jacob Koschitzke, who had little impact against Melbourne, or he bolsters the tall forward stocks remains to be seen.

COLLINGWOOD will make at least four changes to its side, with Jeremy Howe (hamstring), Jordan De Goey (concussion), Levi Greenwood (concussion) and Mark Keane (suspension) all unavailable for the Anzac Day clash.

Mason Cox and Darcy Cameron are seemingly in competition for the tall forward / back-up ruck position, with Cox booting two goals in the VFL in a solid but not standout performance.

Will Hoskin-Elliott was managed for the Round 5 loss to West Coast and could be welcomed back into the side given the injury toll, while Brayden Sier was activated as a medical sub and is likely to come into the side. Jay Rantall was arguably Collingwood’s best player in the VFL win over Werribee, finishing with 25 disposals and six tackles, while Tyler Brown had 20 touches.

In defence, the Pies could swing Darcy Moore into the backline after playing forward against the Eagles, while Will Kelly and Nathan Murphy found some touch against Werribee in the VFL.

Finlay Macrae looks set to retain his spot after an impressive AFL debut.
ESSENDON will have to cover for star defender Jordan Ridley, who was subbed out with concussion last week.

Brandon Zerk-Thatcher looms as the most like-for-like replacement as a tall defender and performed well in the VFL after being dropped last week.

David Zaharakis, who’s well-acquainted with Anzac Day footy, also looms as a possible inclusion.

High-profile GEELONG recruit Jeremy Cameron will make his debut for the club against West Coast at GMHBA Stadium this week, with coach Chris Scott confirming the star forward is ready to play after overcoming another hamstring complaint.
However the Cats are caught in a conundrum over whether to book superstar midfielder Patrick Dangerfield in for surgery to mend a syndesmosis issue.

Mark O’Connor is another who should return from injury, while Esava Ratugolea looked good in his second VFL match and could come in to help Rhys Stanley combat Nic Naitanui, should Stanley even hold his spot. However Ratugolea is likely to be given more time in the VFL.

Jordan Clark was unlucky to be left out of the side, but Chris Scott seems intent on Luke Dahlhaus over Clark at the moment.

With an extensive injury list, WEST COAST might be forced to make a few changes for its crunch clash against Geelong.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson hinted star forward Josh Kennedy (ankle) could be rested, but was confident Tom Cole and Josh Rotham would be fine despite their collision against the Pies.

Jamaine Jones was the unused medical sub last week and had a phenomenal game in the WAFL, while Bailey Williams has recovered from an ankle injury.

Captain Shannon Hurn remains “more unlikely than likely”, according to Simpson.

SYDNEY will lose superstar forward Lance Franklin and No. 1 ruckman Tom Hickey for the Round 6 game against Gold Coast.

Franklin faces up to a month on the sidelines, while Hickey will miss up to two months.

Back-up tall Callum Sinclair is likely to get the call up to replace Hickey, while Hayden McLean is likely to be picked to play more inside 50.

Meanwhile, James Rowbottom made a successful return from a knee injury via the VFL.

“He’ll come back in. He’s a good player,” coach John Longmire said of Rowbottom.

“We felt he needed another run on the weekend, and he got through that pretty well. He’s pulled up pretty good from that.

“He’s an important player for us, he puts some pressure on the opposition, so we’ll bring him back in.”

After a shocking run of injury luck to date, GOLD COAST is hopeful both Charlie Ballard and Sean Lemmens will be available to play Sydney on Saturday.

However the Suns duo will need to complete training on Wednesday to be passed fit.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY star Lachie Whitfield could play either this week or next week according to former skipper Phil Davis, as the star rebounds from a bruised liver.

But one definite inclusion, according to coach Leon Cameron, is ruckman Matt Flynn for Friday night’s game against the Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval. It means Shane Mumford is likely to come out of the side, despite his influence at stoppages over the past few weeks.

Defender Sam Reid will come out of the side due to a hamstring injury, but Harry Perryman is a strong chance to return from illness to face the Dogs.

The WESTERN BULLDOGS could be forced to reshuffle their defensive set-up, with gun small backman Bailey Williams to miss up to a month due to a collarbone injury.

However reigning club champion and All-Australian Caleb Daniel will come straight back into the side after serving his one-game suspension for a sling tackle.

The Dogs should also regain Laitham Vadermeer, who was a late withdrawal for Saturday’s clash against the Suns due to back spasms, and ruckman Stefan Martin, who was rested last week.

FREMANTLE will be without young gun midfielder Adam Cerra for this week’s clash against North Melbourne — and longer — after he suffered a “low-grade syndesmosis” injury to his right ankle.

Fringe midfielder Connor Blakely put his hand up for a senior gig in the WAFL with 25 touches against South Fremantle, while Stefan Giro and Mitch Crowden would also be chances to replace Cerra.

NORTH MELBOURNE expects to be boosted by the returns of Luke Davies-Uniacke (calf) and Cam Zurhaar (concussion) for Saturday night’s game against Fremantle.

The duo are likely to be selected, but Aaron Hall (concussion) will definitely miss, while Charlie Lazzaro (hamstring) is in doubt.

ST KILDA best 22 players Rowan Marshall and Zak Jones are set to return to the side after missing the Round 5 loss to Richmond.

Shaun McKernan kicked four goals at VFL level and will also be in the mix, while Jimmy Webster is likely to miss after being subbed off with a groin concern last week.

Despite external pressure, coach Brett Ratten has backed in high-profile recruit Bradley Hill at AFL level.

PORT ADELAIDE isn’t expected to swing the axe or make any forced changes for the Saints clash, with Hamish Hartlett (quad) expected to play.

There is a question mark on Dan Houston, who’ll undergo a fitness test later this week despite suffering an AC joint injury against Carlton. If he can’t get up, does that open the door for Tom Rockliff, who had a lazy 41 touches in the SANFL on the weekend? Or do they bring back Sam Powell-Pepper?

Warner probably ready to trade now that Rowbottom is back.
I have Phillips and Warner I can use this week. Gulden, Flynn, Powell, Jordon and Campbell after that. Then.............. crickets.
Assuming Ziebell and Impey are keepers I have 7 spots to fill and rookies making enough cash for 3, maybe 4 of those 7 spots.
I'm tempted to use Ridley but he has about the easiest job in the comp with all the kick ins. Grundy seems a non negotiable as clearly the second best ruck, and the forwards are poor anyway.
The question I'm pondering at the moment is in the mids. Do I chase Oliver, Neale and Steele or go cheaper to help me complete my team?
