Spot on. Look at the other bad picks...

Neale - Many didn't take him because the limited preseason was a genuine concern. I know that article where he confirmed no preseason was the final nail for me.
Daniel - Tags were a genuine concern, I know it's the reason I didn't go him in the end.
Cripps - Had a strong track record under the coach of scoring like this.
Merrett - Had no real proven scoring record.
Taranto - We all knew he couldn't kick...
Phillips - We all knew he couldn't kick but he's also thrown in being lazy and not working to space enough for an added bonus...
Heeney - His poor durability record was strongly discussed.
Danger - The suspension is just plain dumb luck but there's still the limited preseason factor but even then, you can call him just plain unlucky for those who held.

So on and so on...

Kelly on the other hand the only real knock on him is his terrible durability record and that's basically the only thing that hasn't gone wrong. If anyone mentioned him ending up as a forward pocket entirely out of their midfield rotation or even considered it then I don't recall it.

I can only recall one other player who has baffled me that much was and that was the 3 year period where Hinkley decided Boak was a forward before saving his coaching job by undoing that disaster play and unleashing him back to the guts. He was similarly lost and wasted in that role.

How is Merrett a bad pick? He is averaging 109 and his lowest score is 91, the rest are 100+ scores.

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pu-essendon-bombers--zachary-merrett, seems like a decent scoring record.

Has there ever been so many omissions for a team that’s 5-0 and on top of the ladder?

7 points under his starting price when the majority of the alternatives have matched or exceeded theirs. His peers were Macrae, Steele, Lyons, Oliver (not great either), Bont and Fyfe (missed game hurts but was utterly predictable). He's also offered absolutely nothing as a captaincy option which for a super premium starting pick is a major letdown.

Throw in that the reason he's been so bad is the well known lack of golden ticket that has dogged him for years. Last year wasn't him getting a golden ticket but instead seems to be quite clearly a symptom of the shorter quarters.

Positive is he still has time to fix it and his last game was a lot better but to this point he's not been a good pick which in a binary system only leaves the bad pick option.

Sadly, he's not in my 5 worst picks though... Heck I've managed to make 3 trades already that are worse than him as a starting pick

Macrae and Steele were a good $30k to $40k over his price. Lyons has been the better pick at a cheaper price I will grant you that. Oliver has only scored 22 points more overall and cost around $30k more. Merrett hasn't set the world on fire but it's way too early to call it a bad pick, we're only 5 games into the season.

Very good write up regardless and agree with the rest of it, I have Josh Kelly who is currently a chasm of lost points at M3 :(
