Quick Thoughts - Dogs vs Giants
General - Incredibly ugly game, Giants are playing ugly and they can drag all to their level it would seem. Basically looked like the Swans of 2019 with the sacrifice of stoppages and just put big bodies in there not even wanting to win it but just try and make it a bit harder to get clean breaks and then sideways stagnant possession until you just bomb it to a strong outnumber so you can setup to defend again...
Giants - Just horrible to watch, honestly looks like a side that's just trying to not get thrashed and praying they can keep it close and steal wins, almost like they got their strengths and weaknesses of players reversed and planned around that. They have no forward structure and the answer is just to dump the most talented guys there and hope that fixes it. They've got no ball movement and their stoppages are horrendous, it's 3 big bodies standing around trying to get in the way and away from the ball and when those big bodies do get the ball they try and kick to the other team... Margin was flattering, they can't have more than about 5 I50 in the entire 2nd half until the last couple of minutes, they just flat out looked surprised every time they accidentally scored.
Ash - Jake Lloyd would be proud. I love Ash as a player but he had somewhere in the range of zero impact all game, just racked up the cheap +6s on horrible sideways kicks. If they're going to keep playing like this though he's legitimately an option.
Taranto - Actually thought his ratio was harsh in this one, I reckon about half his contested touches didn't get the grading and his clearances felt lower than watching it, felt like he had 5 clearances from little toepokes to teammates alone. He was actually decent with the ball. His defensive efforts were horrific though, watching players jog away from him as he gives the jogging on the spot chase all night, yuck.
Cumming - Was a bit better than Ash in that he at least looked forward a few times before kicking sideways but same same.
Hopper - Incredibly generous ratio, was dreadful. 4 tackles when your opposition midfield averaged about 35 touches is embarrassing and a couple of his handballs were horrific, the worst was the one to Kelly in the 2nd quarter where he waited until 2 Dogs were on him to handball behind him and I'm not actually sure how Kelly managed to kick it even but all night he missed easy handballs and put them behind teammates and his kicking...
Greene - Star, when you consider the quantity of supply combined with the quality of it his effort was genuinely sublime. I don't actually know how he did what he did.
Perryman - Solid, almost made them worse at kicking sideways than last week but basically the 3rd amigo down back.
Kelly - I don't get it. His 3rd quarter he ended up essentially on ball and was actually good. Rest of the game he was nowhere near it and did nothing. I'm just not sure how you look at a pure clearance midfielder with elite hands that can't mark above his eyes, is one of the worst set shots in the league and has no forward craft and go, yeah, that's a forward pocket, especially if you're paying said player a million bucks... If you wanted a forward pocket who does nothing, why not keep Langdon on a rookie contract? You've got the same player right now.
Idun - I think he might actually have a coaches order that he's not allowed to kick forwards. His 12 touches yielded 27 metres and I honestly think that was entirely from spoils. I missed whatever touch he had that went forwards. Actually hilarious to watch a guy mark it, look forward see 3 open teammates and turn and kick it backwards...
Flynn - Brutal ratio in the first quarter, faded hard from the game after that, couple of big pack marks and some excellent tap work actually fixed one of the worst CD hate sessions I've seen to get him even but he should have had close to his final score at quarter time... He was solid overall but needs to do better against the really bad rucks like tonight. Didn't help that his midfield were so awful, he actually had several great hitouts that his teammates ran away from and ended up sharked as a result.
Green - Absurd ratio, he was also awful and I say that as a huge fan of him but he played a terrible game.
Taylor - One of the worst defensive games I've ever seen one on one, he looked like he thought he was playing netball against Naughton, I didn't see a single time that he tried to check Naughton's run, put a body on him or stop him flying in any way. He was actually good when not playing against his man but was worth pointing out.
Dogs - Ground it out, absolutely dominated the 2nd half after more controlling the first half. They were just flat out good, even when the scoreboard was close it didn't feel like they were at any risk. Midfield dominated and everything flowed from that. They also kicked really poorly at goal. Did get a really, really good run with the umpires, didn't need it, didn't change the result but was a very good run.
Macrae - When you see Hopper and Green with positive ratios and you see him with a negative ratio on that game you just end up absolutely puzzled by the scoring system. I don't know how anyone could watch that game and think that Macrae had a negative impact per touch and Hopper or Green had a positive impact (at all...), baffling. He was sensational.
Liberatore - Honestly, ditto.
Treloar - Going to throw a ditto here. Unless they were grading Hopper on his impact for the Dogs, I don't know how anyone could accept a result that says Treloar and Hopper were equally good.
Bont - On the flipside, he cashed in a token off his golden ticket tonight, to be fair his goal was probably the sealer and he did catch most of his ratio there but like the Hopper/Green things, no way he was better than Macrae for mine from a ratio perspective, he was actually pretty ordinary.
Dunkley - Shoulder injury... because we all wanted to make a sideways trade for the easy starting pick that we all got right. Doesn't look great and looked pretty distressed on the bench. He was excellent until that as well.
Hunter - Was brilliant, in the end his ratio was actually about right but most of the game it seemed so harsh. Felt like he set up their first 10 goals.
Daniel - Ratio feels really unbalanced to my eye test. The stats don't really support it but it really didn't feel like he had any impact on the game. Tough game to grade really, Giants were so bad that he had no real chance. Worth noting that all of Keath, Crozier, Dale, JJ, Daniel, Duryea, Wood and Cordy scored terribly for that very reason, Cumming, Ash and Perryman almost matched the 8 Dogs defenders on their own for a reflection on the game. That said, the Dogs are doing this to most sides and that's a bad sign for his scoring.
English - Copped a Naughton knee to the head when he was again completely unchecked by Taylor jumping into a pack and was out cold. No way he plays next week, got up and walked off which was a great sign as it was a nasty one.
Scott - Got a juicy early ratio and kind of just kept it going, I can't say that it felt like he impacted the game as much as his ratio/score would suggest, one of those ones where not playing great seemed to mean everything was contested. Was solid though and should be in the mix next week still.
McNeil - Scored better than I expected, guess the two goals make a big difference but he didn't seem even that involved! Got to take the extra cash generation and early sub, could have gone much worse!
