Quick Thoughts - Crows vs Giants

General - A really one-sided game. For the first time all year the Giants midfield dominated and the Crows got overwhelmed, to be fair to the Crows, their bare bones group has done an outstanding job for this to be the first time given some of the names getting genuine minutes for them. There was a very strong wind in this one that definitely had the teams alternating styles when into it and I have to say it suited the Giants more as their practised style suited the into the wind and the way they should play was heavily encouraged with the wind.

Crows - Just a rough day, they kicked very badly at goal, got an absolute hiding at the stoppages and didn't kick terribly well in general, not a good recipe. Really they were just outclassed at the end of the day and their effort levels dropped off a fair bit from recent weeks which was always going to be an issue if it happened. Still think they've had a great start to the year.

Walker - Non-2020 Tex was back today, low effort, complaining to umpires constantly, being beaten to the ball and not chasing or pressuring. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt that he's playing with a significant injury but it's hard to look past this being the norm over the last 8 or so years and especially the last 3. It's been a good run but I reckon this is the moment everyone who picked him kind of knew was coming and the decision is now in front of them... is this a blip and 2020 Tex will return next week or has the fairytale come crashing back down, the decision to bring him in was season defining and this next one might be the season decider!

Giants - Easily their best game of the year, I'm not going to point out the obvious, no wait, I am going to point out the obvious... What a difference playing Kelly on a wing makes, that it was the wing the play went through most of the day was an even bigger factor as he essentially became a defacto midfielder and his handballing genuinely tore Adelaide to pieces. Can't undersell how vital Whitfield also was but they got the ball in the hands of their best player, they got Hopper and Ward to stop trying to kick it and as much as I love his future, they got Green out of the main midfield mix, that Daniels got injured and thus wasn't in it was also a big bonus... Credit to Cameron, in round 7 he seemed to kind of remember who Josh Kelly is!

Taranto - Really strong score from him given that it was a pretty stock standard game by him, the last step for them is to get him to stop kicking as well but that's for another day. Clearance and contest work was top notch and he had a great game.

Kelly - Well colour me surprised... It's almost like he's one of the best midfielders in the league when he plays midfield for a whole game, I know, it's just shocking. Still not getting the prime role but the wind meant there was a dominant wing and he was on it all day and he made the most of it, again, his hands were on another level and there he is going at 85% DE which was just a different level to everyone else and his class just stood out. And now I will hold him for another 5 weeks because I will remember this game when he plays forward pocket next week...
Agree, Tex needs to go, winter coming as well, not sure who to go is the issue. Would prefer a midfielder, forward getting to baron though. Zorko serviceable. Ben Brown?

Glad I played you a few weeks ago in SCS Final Siren. Projected +2350 and you would pip me by 60-70 this week. Having a huge game, well done.

Great to see Taranto give us a return. Kelly looks incredible value, would need to see another game before pulling the trigger, then there is the risk factor as you say of change of position. Up to 6 premium mids with no Bont/Neale yet so will likely not go there, it is tempting.

13/1352 C - Gawn Petrrock Ridley Walsh Merrett Olivier Ziebell Powell Jordon to come. If players deliver, likely entry into Top 1000 which is a bonus. Very happy with Bergman and Butts. Bench looking razor thin now.

Played: A Scott, J Macrae (VC), C Daniel, J Short, B Grundy, J Farrar, S Berry, R Laird, T Taranto, J Rowe, J Kelly, T Stewart, J Daniher, C Warner and J Impey
Yet to play: M Gawn (C), C Oliver, J Jordon, J Ziebell, S Docherty, P Cripps and H Chapman

After a couple of poor rounds, it finally looks like my side is starting to turn a corner with the return to form for J Kelly and C Daniel along with T Taranto and J Short putting in some great performances after a quiet last couple of rounds with D Martin and R Sloane still to come back to replace S Berry and A Scott. Rowe received his token fielding this week and I now finally understand the pain endured by those who have had to field him most rounds. Out he goes for May next round via several dpp moves.

Was very tempted to grab Mumford or Hickey over Gawn this round to still allow Zorko to be selected over Farrar but decided against it due to the recent or potential injury concerns for both rucks. This will be unwarranted when Gawn takes his streak to 3 consecutive seasons of suffering an injury during the first 3 weeks of my ownership.

Shame on you @Connoisseur - you shouldn't speak of injury and The Beard in the same sentence!

Amazing how in 2017 the umpires in Sydney paid a mark to Gary Rohan in the dying seconds to beat Essendon, however when the shoes on the other foot like with Geelong last night its “Play On!” What the actual F!

I’m sure I heard the ump say ‘touched’ when the ball was kicked to Cameron. In any event it evened up the bad Lloyd decision earlier in the quarter that gifted Close a goal. I have zero problems with it... plus as others have said Jezza probably would’ve missed the shot given he was next to the behind post with a shot after the siren and no ability to improve the angle.

I didn't take any notice, but it didn't happen to be that number 32 umpire was it ?
Only 3 weeks ago Hickey got tackled with the most obvious holding the ball decision ever. (play on the call.)
Essendon robbed in the last few seconds, and now Geelong robbed. (was at least 20 metres, and then the next ball decision)
Not sour grapes at all, just an observation.

Disagree. Definitely didn’t say touched, but DID say not 15, play on, which as I said amazes me as Gary Rohan got a similar kick and was no doubts about the 15m then. Not to mention the hold on Gleeson at the time.

Highlighting the fact that the umpires consistently look after Sydney at their home ground year after year after year. It’s not even about whether Jeremy Cameron kicked the goal or not. It’s about being paid the mark he deserved.

Essendon copped the shaft with Sydney a few weeks back when umpire Jacob Mollison thought he was in playing for the swans awarding them 16 free kicks to 1 for Essendon. They allowed Tom Hickey to grab the ball out of the ruck and be tackled without a HTB call many times for far too long.

Anyway, each to their own. People aren’t gonna change their mind but I find it very very obvious.

Possibly belongs in the rant thread, but umpires really need to be taught exactly how far 15 metres is. They make a lot of mistakes on this with both kick to marks and the distances players run before bouncing. I know it's a very tough job, but the kicking one in particular is very inconsistent, the running too far just rarely gets paid.

You conveniently don’t discuss the free to Close that nearly handed Geelong the game..

as for the HTB non call against Hickey - that rule changed years ago allowing the ruckman to grab the ball out of the ruck and not count as prior opportunity - I didn’t actually think it was the wrong call at the time - 50/50 at best

13/1142 - no C. Two rookies still to come in Jordon and Chapman. Projected for over 2300, would be happy with that and winning my PL and $50 SCS matches.
As long as you don't win the SCS Hawks league match against me, you're welcome to win those two, especially if you can get over 2300! My projected score is a bit off due to looping, think we'll end up pretty close, depending on just how well the Beard goes. Still want him to smash it, even though he is your captain.
