It is always a range of factors. Often these players are traded out in the byes to someone who plays three games and becomes deadwood, all to save a donut.

We get to the end of the season needing a trade to use for a premium injured or to downgrade a $270k player and we spent it during the byes. Dangerous to commit that he will be traded if he has played just this extra game.

Have see a SC winner who kept plowman the entire year at D8. Learn from the winners the discipline I say, I am not good enough to create my own rules to win.

These trades pay the highest return round 3-7 as the quality of rookies is higher then that you are trading to. If it is Lachie Jones traded in, maybe it makes sense. Remain fluid, flexible and open minded and dont worry about this now.
Those are some good points you make. To clarify, I didn't mean to say I've locked in trading him at the byes, regardless of who the trade in options are and my bench situation. What I meant was, if he plays 1 game and no more by the byes, then it's pretty clear he is deadwood. I'm happy to trade these types of players at the byes because a) we need as much bench cover as possible, not just for the byes but the rest of the year and b) 3 trades per week allows for the sideways correction type trades without slowing down on field upgrades. Yes the player traded in can become deadwood too, but that's no different to any rookie trade in. In fact, if he's played every game and is $300k, every man and his dog will be keen to trade him for a rookie. But this situation is risky too, apart from the extra cash made, you're trading out reliable bench cover for a potential deadwood rookie. I agree that staying fluid is key, and keeping him all season may actually be the best option, but if I have the trades I won't hesitate to trade him out for a good prospect just because he hasn't made enough money.

Great post as usual GFB.

I can definitely see a world where I trade out a 170k Highmore if it saves a donut and there's a rookie I want and I prefer it to other options. But the starting point has to be that trading a 170k is highly undesirable.

I think the main thing is giving your team a chance to succeed, rather than locking in failures. Especially approaching the byes, I think people can fixate on getting the 'perfect' team, with no deadwood, which holds them back from continuing to improve it in ways that are more important - specifically, capitalising on good discounted premos and getting your team complete as quickly as possible.

Exactly right. Trading 170k players to iffy rookies scoring less than 40 just to save a donut during the byes is in almost all cases, not worth it .

So hoping Flynn rucks and Mumford is rested.
Just reading an article on afl.com (19 hours old) and it sure sounds like Kieren Briggs is psyched up for and fully expecting to do all the rucking with no mention of any other position so not sure how well that bodes for Flynn, but, fingers crossed he gets a gig as surely they wouldn't just let Briggs solo ruck...or would they ?

511k for a player with four consecutive seasons averaging 113+, has a 205SC on his resume, had 23 CBAs last week and now a 64 BE, and he has the preferred bye for a mid, and everyone's still tiptoeing around the potential risks. What do you want, a court order that he has to be played in the mids and isn't allowed to get hit? Youse have all got greedy.
