Rain.
South Africa 6 for 140 at end of the day
Mitchell Johnson 4 wickets, Siddle 1 and Lyon 1

Need 58 to avoid follow on.
They should be able to do that but no guarantees with way Johnson is bowling that they can.
Maybe Clarke would not enforce it anyway.

In any case, strong position to be in after 2 days play.
The mental damage done is the big story for mine.

Wake up this morning and check the scores, Johnson at it again by the looks of it with some brutal short stuff from the replays I saw on TV.
Steve Smith 4 tons in his last 7 test, hard to believe he wasn't in the initial touring squad for ENG and then played the first test and hasn't missed since then. Captain in waiting I think.

It is really great.
I think all that time he spent with Dennis Lillee as a mentor has done him the world of good. He must have really got into MJ head and make him understand how to really give it to the batsmen with a combination of hostility and skill.
I know guys like Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Shoaib Akhtar were a bit quicker but the way he is bowling is actually scarier to face as lots of his bouncers are really right on the money. Lots of Brett Lee and Akhtar bouncers way over batsmens head.

I think this fast bowling is right up there for hostility with DK Lillee, Andy Roberts and quickest of all Thommo.
Not seen a bowlers shake batsmen up this much since those early days of watching cricket.

Craig McDermott also did something similar in early 1990's in West Indies. I think he regularly had Gordon Greenidge, Gus Logie and others in trouble and the West Indies fast bowlers ganged up on him as there was 4 of them to bowl at him when he batted...lol... We only had him that could dish it out , at that time and 1991 or 92 was like this.

In 6th Test this summer, so far Mitchell Johnson has 44 wickets at an average of 13.3 runs per wicket and strike rate of 28.1

Bloody impressive strike rate in that time.

Gee he is in some super form isn't he!! Great to see that he finished off the innings and claimed a 7 wicket haul.

Anyone think Chris Rogers could be in some trouble to keep his spot in the side? Scores of 1 and 4.. if Doolan and Marsh bat well this innings, and if Watson is ready for the 2nd test he could be on the way out. Marsh and Watson capable at opening.

It would be ballsy to drop him after scoring recent centuries and probably a little unfair but to be honest, my gut feel is, if we dropped him for Hughes we'd be better off in short term and longer term. I just don't think Rogers will handle the step up in class of facing Steyn. I'm not expecting him to average 30 this series.

If Doolan bats well he gets another go.

Remember he has 2 tons in his last couple of matches or something close to it.
Watson won't be right for the second test from what I have read, and the selectors are willing to give Doolan a decent stay at number 3 which I think is good. Marsh's ton in the first innings is brilliant as it means with guys having guys with technique of Doolan and Marsh at 3 and 4 allows Clarke to go at 5 and Smith at 6. All of the sudden and pretty solid middle order. If Rogers fails in the next test and maybe the third then he might be in a bit of trouble, if Watson was right they might slot him back in as an opener. But I think the grad plan is to get Phil Hughes back in the opening position pretty soon I reckon to have settled in and ready come the next Ashes series.

Geez, Marsh already on 43 in 2nd innings.
Doubt he can grab man of match away from Johnson but giving it a go.
Aussies 3 for 286 right now
Doolan was out for 89 earlier.
Clarke is in with Marsh, with Clarke on 16

Lead 477 with still two days to play.
South Africa need Moses to part some seas or some bloody miracle to get out of this.

Wow what another great day of test cricket for the Aussies. Doolan going close to a ton in his first test, Warner making SA pay after dropping him 3 times, and Marsh at it again. Great to see!!!

SA in all sorts of trouble, Pup declared and the Mitch Johnson train continues with him picking up Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen for 4 and 1.

Currently 2/40 after 9.

After 35 overs, South Africa is 4/105. de Villiers, looking classy as ever, is on 28 (56), Duminy is 3 (18).

Harris got Amla.

South Africa still requires 377 runs to win.
