2022: AFL SC Player Discussions

I think the rucks are going to be very interesting next year, the old Gawn/Grundy combo that has served most of us well over the last few years looks like ending.
So many younger options like Darcy, English, Marshall (is Ryder playing on next year?) etc are very enticing.
Then there is Braydon Preuss if 100% fit who will be at a great price with no Mummy to worry about anymore.
I could see myself taking a risk at R2 with Charlie Comben at R3 (ruck/fwd hopefully) with Marshall in the fwds to link up/ provide cover if required.

Heppell pretty much a lock at D6 for mine.
Steele will be an obvious uber premo to start off most teams I suspect. De Goey also looking good as a starting mid with some risk but big upside. Wines almost a lock too as long as his scoring doesn't get completely out of hand in the last 5 rounds.

What makes Preuss the No.1 Ruck at GWS?
He has yet to play a full season (combined) during his AFL tenure.
He wasn't second behind Mummy before the season started, wirh Flynn coming off an ACL who has proven he is an AFL standard player (at worst). Briggs hasn't disgraced himself in his appearances.

Preuss & Flynn were fighting for the number 1 ruck spot before injury, think Preuss was just ahead - no doubt Flynn has impressed so it will be a good battle next year to be the number 1. Briggs strikes me as more a backup type personally, but the point being there is a real opportunity for Preuss next year if he can stay fit which is the million dollar question.
Popular Melbourne media coverage had Preuss was just ahead of a rookie Ruckman, who did his ACL mid year of 2019 and was only able to play a few scratch matches in 2020 due to Covid19. He should have been streaks ahead, yet was in a battle (?).
Preuss would need to have clear air before I'd consider him. Then factor in his injury history. His price would need to be under $200K.

Highly advise against selecting Wines and would only consider later in the season, if running very low on cash considering the large array of premium midfielders often available around a similar price range.
Averaging 32.8 disposals (3rd in the league) and has only just reached a 110 avg which limits his ceiling for future seasons as he has likely reached his peak. Poor user by foot and therefore handballs far too often to be relevant as a starting option when compared to the top echelon. Unlikely that TOG% will increase nor will categories such as marks, tackles, etc as these should stay in line with his historical averages.

Have had my '22 planing in my phone notes for a while now. The possible DPPs the other day made me put a bit more work into it.
DEFs:
Lloyd - just banks 2200+ points for the season.
Ridley - injury game and took a while to get back into it, unders like Stewart was at the start of this year.
Hall - Sub games mean he's well unders, probably like 10ppg unders. Bloke is a bruise free, chip scabbing SC star. I was massive on McDonald this preseason, this bloke has pinched his role and done it better, SC wise at least.
MIDs:
Macrae - Gets it done every year. He'll get it done again in '22.
Steele - been an absolute delight to own this season, assuming the Saints don't cook the first half of the season again next year.
Walsh - Kids good, really good. Now showing that he has a massive ceiling to boot.
Neale - unders, succumbed to the Brownlow Curse, he bounces back.
MCrouch - Was a big fan this preseason, should get the 20% discount. Hopefully gets a few games in this year and tanks his price.
RUCK:
Grundy - free.
Marshall - can't bring myself to spent Grundy/Macrae level coin on Darcy, just doesn't have the history and yet to manage a full season. Will eventually pay up for whoever is R1/2 for the season and swing Marshall FWD.
FWD:
English - assuming he gets DPP, can't see Stef Martin going around again. I am a sucker for F/R DPP swings.
Butters: I've used my last 3 trades on him this season so I'm sure as hell not passing him up at a cheaper price next year and letting him burn me by not owning him.
Probably try sneak Duncan in, if prices allow it, was nice of him to knock 20 points off his averaging in his last 3 games.
Hopefully no rookie drought across a single line like there was with the DEFs this season, while starting 5 premium DEFs this season worked out, it wasn't very flexible. Had to get Rids in after his belter start, and was unable to fit in Mills because of it.

Out-of-contract Geelong midfielder Charlie Constable is certain to depart the club at the end of 2021 if a rival suitor emerges, according to SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund.
The 22-year-old has played just three games at AFL level this year as he continues to bide his time in the VFL.
Constable tried – and failed – to secure a move away from the Cats last year in search for more game time and Edmund now believes he will leave Kardinia Park if another club offers him a deal.
“Charlie Constable is the really interesting one and not for the first time,” he said on SEN Flip with Kane Cornes.
“But the difference this time is he’s out of contract, the Cats want him to stay and they’ve told him they want to re-sign him and that Joel Selwood is winding down and there’s a seat for him in the future.
“He’s had to be oh so patient with 12 games in four seasons, he’s tearing up the VFL. He tried to orchestrate a trade last year with a year to run on his contract but no suitable offers emerged so he stayed.

The 22-year old racked up a game-high 42 disposals in Geelong’s 75-point win over Essendon in the VFL on Friday night. He has strung an impressive patch of form together, gathering 32, 34, 33, 44 and 42 disposals from his last five games to take his season average to 33.
Constable has been restricted to just three senior appearances this year and stuck behind the likes of Cam Guthrie, Mitch Duncan, Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and even Quinton Narkle in the midfield pecking order.
High on my radar if he goes to a club that needs an inside midfielder.

I can think of a few clubs that could use an inside mid especially one that seemingly really wants to leave.
Could be the "alir alir" of 2022? (different position and all, im just talking about his SC potential being around the same?)
More than 50% is not bad especially in a team like the Cats where its hard for anyone to score other than the big names there.
Although this is all just my usual speculation on the future )
