Might be a good idea to have a central point for pre-season training reports coming into the pointy end to make it easier for those with little time to find rather than sifting through endless posts/threads elsewhere.

I'll post what I find and if mods want to move, delete or merge - go your hardest.

*Disclosure - none of the reports below are my personal observations and I'm just relaying our avid track watchers thoughts

BigFooty - shimaburnsgrieg

Just a brief comment from myself as most seemed to have covered all the key points.

I was there for the full session and wowsers - JHF. That was as dominant (albeit 30 minute) display from a player that hasn't played an AFL game that you would ever wish to see.

He was up against our first tier mids in Jy, LDU and TT at centre bounces and just tore them a new one with judgment, pace and repeat give and gets. Extraordinary - even in the context of the high praise that he comes with being the number 1 pick. His team work with WAP was just a joy to watch standing on the old grandstand wing position.

The talk of 75% forward for JHY needs to be revised now - he will be at least 50% in the guts.

If JHF continues with this type of form he will our equal premier mid (with TT) by year end and will finish top 4-6 in the B and F.

In terms of 'best 22' the interesting one is X. Clearly improved and if you wanted to rate he and CCJ then X would be ahead. However the actual centre bounce ruck work was side to side competing - they didn't run and jump at each other - and the latter would assist CCJ so maybe its too early to tell.

Lastly - rumours of J Polec's death have been greatly exaggerated. Overall ball use of the group was average tbh - however Polec was his usual self - racking up touches and using the ball well. He will start best 22 on the wing if he remains fit given that display today.

BigFooty - Sphynx

Alright, there was 2 x real 15m intra club qtrs, then the endzone one which is a lot more powderpuff given the point of it is to practice transitioning the ball from end to end. There was no center bounces, throw ins, stoppages etc in the 3rd qtr. They had some other transitional full ground drills with the umpires and they smashed them in some running drills in between so the intensity was lower.

I missed the first part of the 1st qtr.

JHF - Just a complete phenom. Almost like a kid with severe ADHD, he was just so ferocious around the ball and to the man at the center bounces and stoppages. He was like a wild animal defensively. He probably had 15 touches and 5 clearances in 30 mins and god knows how many tackles, it must have been 5+ in the half. Because of his pace, not just little hand balls out of congestion, he breaks through congestion and runs and carries and knows how to get repeat possessions in chains of play. Noble has discussed 30/70 mid/fwd split, that may still be right, but that 30% is going to have to be in center bounce stoppages. Today was an illustration that he is far to valuable an asset to be sitting on a forward flank all game, just like Thomas was last year. He flat out killed Simpkin and LDU in those center bounces, it was like watching a 3rd year Patrick Dangerfield at times.

Phillips - As has been said, he's was sloppy in some handballing, but he's starting to feel ultra comfortable at the level obviously. As observed last year, he's a metronome in midfield, always moving towards the ball, always around the ball, was everywhere basically. He and JHF really did spank LDU and Simpkin in the center square stoppages and combined really well. Huge improvement in 2021 coming.

Bergman - He continues to impress and there's definitely a serious player there in a few years. He throws his body about, loves and tackle and is a general hard bugger despite looking like a stick insect. Im intrigued to see him at VFL level because he's going to impress a few.

Goater - I've said it before, but I think he's in our Rnd 1 side. I have him ahead of Perez. He lined up with basically the 2021 best 22 backline today and didn't look out of place at all. He took 1 intercept mark floating across 60m out from the attacking goal as the wall, then grubbered that kick I50, the ball came back out and floated in front of a pack to take his second intercept in a minute. He hit 2-3 absolute worldy passes throughout the day, as I said, in space on the run he will cut sides to peices.

Hall, Ziebell, Corr, McKay, Walker - All looked decent enough, the ball was at the other end for well over half of it with a strong breeze to the Fogarty St end. So hard to judge. Hall looks set to replicate his 2021 season IMO, which will be huge.

LDU - He had his pants pulled down in the center bounces, but was really good around the ground, in the latter match sim he was really dominant. At one point he had the ball and JHF was running at him front on, he burst through JHF, JHF had to turn and try and lunge at him, but probably realised how quick LDU is himself and exploded through the second attempted tackle.

Thomas - Like seriously. Was a throwback to the 90's at times. He did what he wanted at times, kicked 3-4 in a half drifting all over the place, most of the goals were crumbs and checksides and banana's through packs. He popped up all over the ground. He is our best player, no doubt about it and is going to capture some souls all year in this role. Watch out AFL defenders and midfielders. He's a top 50 AFL player already imo.

McGuiness - Played CHB on Comben and got taught a bit of a lesson tbh. He dropped an uncontested soda 5m out in his own goal square which got rushed through. He would have been shot out of a cannon into purgatory had he done that in an AFL game. Needs some VFL experience in the role.

Comben - Starts Rnd 1. Crashed packs that resulted in crumbed goals, worked hard up and back, extremely agile when the balls on the deck and he impacts the game whether in the air or on the ground. Best tall on the ground for mine and I don't think he even kicked a goal.

Laz/Perez/Scott - Both little bit disappointing. Perez looks dynamite in some drills, he's one of the best kicks at the club, I don't think he accumulates and reads the plays as naturally as Goater through. I think Goater is ahead of him personally.

Let me know if you want to know about anyone else.

BigFooty - My Left Foot

Training report, apologies if I double up things that have already been said.

Will Phillips: BOG for me. Winning centre square clearances, one beautiful kick to a leading CCJ at centre half-forward, some great combinations with JHF (when he was moved in to the centre) a particularly memorable handball exchange found JHF streaming in to the F50 (unfortunately he missed the target). Was involved around the ground in link up play too, a complete game from Will.

JHF: A very close second to Will. Not much more to say that hasn't already been said, the thing I especially liked was just how comfortable he was when moved into the centre square as most of the footage I've seen was more in that half-forward role.

Jared Polec. Don't write this guy off just yet, yes he has deficiencies, his run and carry today was great. His left foot is sublime. He starts Round 1 for me.

Jack Mahony: Thought he played really well today, his work between the arcs was very impressive, presented time and time again, was involved in a lot of transition play.

Atu: Another who played well, took a couple of very good marks: one backing back in defensive 50 and another pack mark when the opposition were trying to clear from their D50.

Charlie Lazzaro & Tom Powell: Were on the Pink Team so didn't get a lot of possessions but when the did they didn't waste them both had solid games.

Miller Bergman: His light frame doesn't stop him from getting involved was impressed with today was on JZ at time and more than her his own. I was surprised to see him miss a few targets after everything I've heard about his kicking but nothing to be concerned about.

LDU: LDU did LDU things some great evasive steps and bursts away from packs, bursting through tackles and some over cooked kicks going into the Forward 50.

Lachie Young: Was involved quite a bit, got his hands on the ball often unfortunately his kicking let him down today, a few missed targets.

Eddie Ford & Cam Zurhaar: Thought both played well today.

Aaron Hall: Had a lot of the ball, provided great run and carry out of defence missed a few targets though.

That's about all for me, I think other posters have covered off other players but happy to answers any questions.

Three side bars:
Pretty sure Daniel Harris was talking to Brady, Scotty & Mark on the boundary.

In one of the later match sims / drills Tom Powell was sitting out and talking to Patch on the wing. Boomer called for a footy from Patch, who subsequently tried to kick a top to him and missed by about 15 metres. Boomer then called Tom who then delivered it perfectly to him. Boomer responded with a big smile and a little hand clap.

Flynn Perez was doing a lot of resistance training on the boundary, he looks in ripping nick, obviously not ready for a match sim but surely can't be too far away, really want this guy to make it.

Saw the game. These are the teams from memory.

Pink:
B: Walker - McKay - Atu
HB: Goater - Ziebell - Scott
C: Powell - Simpkin - Taylor
HF: Archer - Edwards - Lazzaro
F: Curtis - Comben - Dib?
R: Xerri - LDU - Thomas

Blue:
B: Turner - McGuinness - McDonald
HB: Hayden - Hall - Bergman
C: Young - Greenwood - Polec
HF: Stephenson - Goldstein - Ford
F: Zurhaar - Larkey - Mahoney
R: CCJ - Phillips - Horne-Francis

Spicer has a bandaged hammy, Bonar and P.Walker on sidelines, Perez doing resistance work on the side, no sign of apples.

2 x 15 minutes halves.

Thought WAP, JHF and Greenwood took the clearance points from Jy, LDU and Thomas.

JHF is a beast and has everything going for him. Pace, intensity, strength, leap and skills. Close to best on.
WAP was pretty solid. Some of his handballing was a little off but his repeat efforts and continuous running saw him either stay in the contest to regain possession or receive again 20 meters down the track. That stuff he was doing at U/18 level is starting to come to the fore.
Thomas was moved around a bit. Starting in the guts, down back early, up forward later. Looks a million bucks and up forward creates havoc.
LDU was solid. Did some nice things. Same with Jy.
Bergman and Goater looked good off respective half back lines. Bergman is not afraid to back himself with ball in hand and fluffed a few inboard kicks, but nailed a few too. Kid can find the football which is half the battle. Stick thin but not afraid to go. Goater probably got a bit less of the pill but looks pretty good.
Paul Curtis played up front and looked good when he got involved, which wasn't a great deal.
Mahoney probably best of the small forwards, linking up well and generally getting involved.
Powell quite solid off the wing, matched up against Lachie young. A lot of his work was done in defence as he was forced back as his side was being beaten. A few mistimed kicks but generally really good.
Laz was relatively quiet. Mostly off half forward in a losing side but did do some nice things. Looks strong.
Polec was really good.

Happy to provide more info.

BigFooty - Jen2310

Training report - Wed Feb 2nd, 2022.

I did all the normal things. Wake up early. Take the train, and got there around 9:15. I expected I would be late, and they would have started but nothing. There was nobody on the ground. No equiment or footballs around.
Was chatting to some people who then discovered because of their break, the players might have been a bit sluggish (they were when the session began) so they were gonna do weights. Lunch and then train at 1:15pm. A little different as they usually do the opposite (train. lunch. weights)

Went to the cafe down by AAMI park, then met up with a friend who then we hung out, then grabbed starbucks in the city before coming back after 12 for the session to start.

Now lets get into it.

Everyone was present except for Beggy and WHE.

Murphy did the drills, but then did some agility stuff with a trainer, as he makes his way back from injury.

McMahon playing in defence. I don't mind it as it will help his development by getting him involved and reading the play, how the ball comes in. Not the first key forward that has done a bit of defence in early stages of his career.

Kelly sticking his marks. Had a huge contested grab up against 2-3 defenders.

Reef dominat as he snaps a goal.

Injuries:

Don't pay attention to what you may have heard in the media. 10 minutes before the session finished, as my phone died; Adams trained fully. If he had a slight issue, he finished the session so nothing to be concerned over.

Kreuger too. He went up for a contested mark and I think just came down on his ankle. Looked to be in pain originally. But after a few moments, he was walking around okay. Then he did continue with the rest of the match play.

I wouldn't say either are anything to worry about.

Now Johnson on the other hand. I didn't see the incident, but did leave the track. The girl I was chatting to said possible hammy. But I'll see if he is around on Friday and we'll get a better idea. I did see him at the end of the session after he came back outside. No ice or anything though.

Without Begg, Roughy had to shoulder some of the luck load. Not the first time he has done it over the course of his career, so wouldn't have bothered him I wouldn't think.

They started with their usual "Monday" warm up, did some drills, and some running through the middle of the ground.

Re: The drills.

They were definitely rusty. I didn't video this for a couple reasons. I was trying to save my phone battery, and trust me... that's not something anyone needed to see.
My friend was like.. if our skills are this bad, and we do this in games, we're gonna be smashed. But we do have a lot of work to be done.

Turnovers. Missed kicks and hitting targets was an issue when they began the drills. It was a trainwreck, but like I said I hope it was just a bit of rust from a long weekend.

Today looked like Lippa started more forward then drifted through the midfield and Jordy started more mid and ended up forward at times.

Other mids that were in centre bounces were Adams, Macrae, Jamie, Reef. Nick. Cal, Maynard. Noble. Poulter on the wing. With Cameron or Cox rucking.

Then we had Josh, Tyler B, Crisp, Lippa rolling through there.

EFC Training Report Thursday Feb 3rd
Training Report Thursday Feb 3rd

Much cooler conditions with little humidity that i think got the boys up and about today. They were quite vocal and as February starts you can tell the season is not far from starting. Little did we know too that the boys were going to complete their first proper intra club match for 3 x 20min Periods (no overtime). This is what I wanted to see as you get a much better sense of where players are at.

It was Pink v Blue tops. Pink probably being 80% senior best 22 players. There was a 4-5 goal breeze going to the airport end of the oval.

The first bounce of the game and Ben Hobbs in Blue roves and tries to barge through some players. There is a ball up. Ball is bounced again and Hobbs grabs it again from the ruck and releases the handball…it was then i realised…ok I see you Ben!!! Ben would go on to have multiple clearances, hard ball gets and around 16-20 disposals in three short Qtrs. What was pleasing was that his short kicking was spot on today…was a great small game sample…even better it was against our top line mids in Pink.

One thing that stood out was the senior players who have been going “ok” suddenly showed that they mean business now. Parish was just getting so much of the football and became a threat going forward with two goals…one was a great roving play from Wright who tapped it perfectly to him from a boundary throw in. Darcy looked every bit of last years form. Langford for me probablty was the BOG. His overhead marking was brilliant. He must of had something like 20-25 touches and 8 marks in a 3/4 game. Langers played mostly on the wing but sometimes drifted forward to create an option. He is now playing that role to perfection.

As far as forwards…Wright kicked 3 and they were all solid one grab marks. I have to say his opponent was McBride who was really struggling. Francis played the first half for the Pink team and lined up on Cutler…kicked two on him and was creating headaches with his marking. Glad to see his form progressed to match practice. Never seen him actually smile and joke so much with the group today. He is in a great place. Francis went to the Blue team after half time and the oppurtunities naturally were not as much. Baldwin went to the pink team and suddenly we saw him break out and kick two goals. Importantly he had several strong contested marks today. I still dont think he is quite best 22 yet but I do believe he will get games this year and keep progressing stronger as the year goes on. Great signs today.

Shiel and Merrett were very solid today and got plenty of footy…both look in pretty good shape to have big years. McGrath also is showing good signs. I thought Hepps was probabaly the best as far as defenders today…he is moving really well and a full pre season is bearing some fruit. He could have the ability to help on a wing this year if need be.

The players vying for list spots were all pretty down today besides Clarke. Tex, Fejo and Martin i sense struggled a bit with the quicker pace today. Tex probably looked like he could do more damage and was moving well. Tex was half forward flank for the blue team so was a victim of limited delivery. Fejo just could not get into the game on the wing.

As far as rucks Draper was the obvious stand out. Did his normal 40m sprint from a ruck pack and kick the ball sideways lol. His kicking at pace is a slight concern but he does so many other things that impacts the game for the positive.

There were some players not at training like Eyre, Walla, Zerk and Cox. Unsure why sorry. Perkins completed half of full training. He is about ready to go.

Perkins i hear will join full training next week. Jones is only a week away as well. Brand, Reid, Hurley and Voss were in the modified rehab group.

There was a few positional changes. Lord played half the game as a small forward…created a nice goal for Baldwin actually. Lord is a really nice get…like him a lot.

Cutler offensively from defense was impressive and it was similar to his form in the back end of 2021. He is now a much better depth player…possibly even best 22. Defensively Francis got him a few times but overall still had a solid hit out. Snelling was very busy and doing all the things a coach loves. Caldwell also solid but got a slight knock to ribs or guts that made him a bit proppy for 10 mins. Was fine after that.

With a tricky wind the skills were pretty solid today. It was a fun first hot out to watch. Probabaly the main take away in the end was Hobbs…who the coaches would of been thrilled with today.

Pink team is:-
B: Laverde Stewart Kelly
Hb: Heppell Ridley Durham (later Hind)
C: Mcgrath Caldwell Langford
Foll: Draper Parish Merrett
Hf: Stringer Francis Sheil
F: Smith Wright Snelling

Blue Team
B: Redman McBride Guelfi
Hb: Martin Cutler Hind (later Durham)
C: Ham McDonough Fejo
Foll: Bryan Hobbs Clarke
Hf: Lord Baldwin Waterman
F: Hird Phillips Wanganeen

BigFooty - Kick it to me_

Looks like match sim is 10-11 Fridays also
Sorry this is from memory so not a heap of notes today.

Think we will get footage, was 3 cameras out.

No doedee, Cook, or Rachele.
Rachele lives with Cook so hope it's not a covid thing and obviously doedee has concussion from earlier in the week.

Seed running laps in sunglasses.
Fisher running laps, looks like he's been hitting the gym, looks in good condition.
Murphy running laps, looks to be work hard to get back.

Rehab group looks like a lonely place

Good news! Keays out there today so ankle wasn't to bad, Pedlar and Crouch involved in full training.

One of the early drills midfield three teams rotating through

Laird, Crouch, Schoenberg - yellow
Sloan, Pedlar, Soligo - blue
Hately, Dawson, Keays - white

Not sure if Berry was in there.

ROB and Strachan rotated between team

What I took out of that yellow team was the strongest as you could imagine more experienced. Bit of a synergy happening with the 3 of them. Schoenberg will take another step fwd this year.

Something about Soligo, he's got something.

Hately performed alot better, over head clearance to Dawson. More on Dawson later.

Match Sim

Murray vs Frampton battle
Think Murray is ahead but framptons field kicking is much better. Murray has a booming kick just went out of play few times.

New battle for mid/fwd role - might not be a battle but just seen similar position they could play in the team.

Keays vs Pedlar
Keays kicked 2 long range goals and one point. Looks good again. Then hurt his ankle again late. Walked it off so should be alright. Spent time resting I fwd 50.
Pedlar caught someone holding the ball in fwd 50, think his pace in the fwd half would be good.
Think it's a similar position to keays.

Hamill
His kicking has improved, I don't know if it's just because it's training. In early training drill Hamill kicked beautifully to switch play, to Dawson with neat inside 50. Can't remember who then kicked a goal. He had some really neat switches of play. Winning alot of one on ones.

Jones
Reading the ball well, neat kicking on display. Mopped up few times. Winning one on one's, streaming out of defence. He's a lock in the defence for me. Did turn it over once and wasn't very happy with himself.

Dawson
He kick a beautiful running goal, and one of the players called it Elite. Think that's the best way to describe him. Looks like a very complete player to me and his kicking is obviously his weapon. He took Murray out to sheppard him off the ball at one stage. Murray is a decent lump of a lad and he performed ok in the midfield drill that's something that has suprised me. Imagine hes going to develop inside of his game. At one stage pioted and switched play to the far side with a beautiful kick, I couldn't see the finish but a mark was called. If he can switch play that quickly it's going to be a nightmare of opposition teams to defend.

Hately
Did a few nice things today, on the inside and his kicking looked better today...then lairds lol.

I went to training this morning and watched a long match sim. I sat in the outer where there is now some grass on the slope and some small gum trees. It was very pleasant, if somewhat windy.

It is quite hard to pick up the players as many are in caps, have new haircuts etc, but I will do my best.

2 teams, purple and white. Purple seemed to have more of the best 22, with a starting midfield of our Sean, Caleb and, I think, Andy, although Andy swapped to white part way thru. Purple had Tabs, Lobb, Sonny and Sturt up forward so a significant part of a starting forward line.

At the time that I left things were close to equal on the scoreboard.

Caleb was the dominant midfielder on the ground. Brodie did a couple of nice things, including a good goal and looked serviceable. Meek in white held his own against our Sean and drifted forward to kick a goal. Switta had some good moments. Erasmus got a bit of the ball and looked okay. Western kicked a couple of goals and looked lively. Sonny looked fit and moved well. Connor kicked a long goal but had little of the ball other than that. Tucker got a bit of the ball, and looked reasonable.

Alex played on Tabs and Tabs looked quite good early. Tabs ran laps later in the match sim, looked fine, just management I would think. Rory rolled his ankle or something and did not come out for the last stanza (I left about that time). Brennan played back much to my disappointment.

No sign of Fyfe. Mundy, Treacy and Amiss in the rehab group.

On balance I would say there was a focus on quick ball movement and skills were ordinary in quite windy conditions.

BigFooty - The_Axeman

Well it was a nice dose of Winter out at Waverley this morning. Cloudy, cold, windy and the rain started just as I was leaving.

It was an outstanding session to witness as it was very much all match sim type drills followed by actual match sim in the format of 3 x 15min qtrs, or technically, thirds.

Overall, standout players for me today were Worpel, Macdonald & Newcombe.

SYL has provided some tasty morsels from todays session but here are my observations:

Gold:
McEvoy
Breust
Worpel
Newcombe
Ward
Lynch
Denver
Lewis
Brockman
Jeka
Shiels

Brown:
Reeves
O'Meara
T Mitchell
MacDonald
Magginess
Callow
Kosi
Moore
Philips
Howe
Gunners
Morris
Seamus Mitchell
Morrison

plus some Box Hill Players on each side including Aducci, Blank, Porter Wynd, Philips

Worpel was the dominant mid on the ground. He had more of the ball than anybody and repeatedly just cut a path through opposition mids and generally disposed of the ball nicely. On multiple occasions he combined with Ward at centre bounces with Worpel getting the clearance and dishing off to Ward who was waiting just off the contest. This looks to be a mouth watering combo for the future.

This brings me to Ward who did nothing to dampen our collective enthusiasm re. his potential. Composure, skill, work rate. Josh has it all. Time and again he would dispose of the ball at half back or in the middle and then be at half forward ready to get involved again. His disposal is top notch and he never panics.

Macdonald, like Ward, doesn't seem to have any really noticeable deficiencies as a player. His disposal over all distances is verging on elite. I reckon he earned more frees that anybody today and it was due to his tackling and pressure. He is a very smooth mover and like Ward, has bucket loads of composure. It's crazy that these two blokes are just 18 years old.

Newcombe was dominant. He was on the gold team along with Worpel and Ward and the three of them were all over Tom Mitchell, Jaegar and Maginnes. Newcombe was only just behind Worpel in terms of his ball winning and was pivotal in many of the attacking plays for the gold team. He tackled like a mad man but what I really liked about Newk's game was the way that he never rushed his disposal. He would draw the opposition player to him to open up space before disposing. He is a round 1 lock for me.

The ruck battle was interesting and should give us all reason to be hopeful. Big Boy and Lynch were on the gold team rucking against Reeves on the brown team. Lynch rucked really well and probably beat Reeves overall, that being said Reeves had some good moments against both Lynch and Big Boy. A few nice taps from reeves to the likes of Macdonald and Maginess. Reeves also took a great juggling contested mark in the forward 50 and then slooted the goal. Lynch was good all over the ground and seemed to have a fair bit of the ball. he dropped back into space to successfully spoil the incoming ball on a number of occasions. he seems to know where to be and was reliable with his use of the ball. He also took a nice mark in the forward line and kicked the goal. I'm bullish about Lynch. he could end up being a steal.

Big Boy was class all over the ground. Whether rucking or playing forward, he took marks, kicked a goal and imposed himself on the session. Looks and acts like the Captain.

Maginness was interesting. The good part is that he definitely knows how to get he ball. he played a fair bit of time as an inside mid and got some clearances. Was also at half back and was pretty good there. He is almost untackleable (is that a word?). He stands up in a tackle, even with two guys trying to pull him down and always get his arms free. What let him down today was his disposal.

DGB's defensive work was first rate. Disposal not so much. DGB generally impacted most of the contests that came into the defensive 50 and was probably one of the main reasons that the brown team found it so hard to score even when they did the ball down their end.

Mitch lewis was very good today and the pick of the fwds. Probably the best i have seen him during any preseason. Showing some real intent, taking good marks. getting up the ground and impacting the play when the ball wasn't coming to him in the fwd line. Hoping this signals a step up for Mitch in 2022.

Kosi had to getup the ground alot as the ball wasn't coming to the brown fwd line much. He took a ripper mark, hit contest hard and disposal was good.

It warmed my heart to see Sicily out there going at full tilt. Every kick was perfection, He was clean by hand and took a pearler of an intercept mark. What a recruit for 2022.

Moore looks set for another good year and may even go up a nother level. he was not far behind the best players.

Howe & Morrison were quiet.

O'meara was decent but not dominant.

T Mitchell did get a lot of the ball but seemed to be hassled and harassed by Gold players, largely Ward & Newcombe, and ended up being relatively ineffective.

Shiels was very solid for the Gold team.

Seamus M show glimpses of being a special player and is lightning fast.

Rehab group:
Day, Impey, Nash, O'hara, CJ, Wingard, Downie.

That's all for now.

BigFooty - TheFourPillars

Just my observations from today

No Shows Dimma and Saunders

Gunston is back in full contact great to see. A few cringe worthy moments where I was like will he get up sore but i was mistaken all good. Tackling, bumping pack marking the only way is up

Morrison at this stage is set for round1. Has been outstanding all preseason

Howe had a quiet one compared to other sessions. I have to say I didn't see Mcdonald as influential as he has been in past intras. Finn for me is behind quite a few others.

Worps and Newc were the best mids on the ground for effectiveness. Given newc playing so well and Nash being behind the 8 ball i can see Newc being there round 1 and Nash not.

Seamus's involvement is limited by his fitness. He will improve over the pre seasons

DGB had is best session today. Was aggressive and had an influence as a defender. Helped that gold were dominating the middle of the ground.

Sic's effectiveness was quelled somewhat today even though he did get it quite a bit. He wasn't the springboard of attack that he was last week.

Moore and Brockman were much more involved in transition today. The were getting all the way to half back at times. Moore also set for a big year turning Scrimshaw inside out on the wing in a contest.

Scrim has been rather consistent all pre season. Today wasn't one of his better games.

Callow really struggled to get into it as a forward. Kosi was forced to come up to the wing to get a kick. Jeka similar to Kosi.

Good to see Morris out there playing Dimma's role. He was pretty good.

Its important to note that JOM didn't take many center bounces. Long and McDonald were up against Worps and Newcs. Mitch was in there mostly on shiels

BigFooty - Guardian Hawk

Hi guys, thanks so much for your recommended adjustments. I agree with all of them. Please see the updated version below:

Sicily - 100% fit and back in form - definite for Round 1
Gunston - fit and participating in all - working back to form - definite for Round 1
Ruck - Sounds like Lynch is ahead in the battle with Reeves to partner McEvoy.
Morrison and Howe - Sounds like of the picks of the 'fringe' guys and likely to be selected for Round 1.
Young mids - excluding Worpel (who is best 18), the updates seem to suggest that pre-season form, it's: 1. Ward, 2. Newcombe, 3. McDonald , 4.Maginess Everything appears to suggest Ward will be included Round 1 as the best performed "non-established" mid (with perhaps 1-2 more of these a good chance).
Of the key forwards, it appears to be: 1. Lewis, 2. Kozi, 3. Jeka, 4. Callow - which is essentially a continuation of last year so I would expect Lewis and Kozi to get first crack with Gunners back in.

BigFooty - Scubaveg

My take on today's scratch match:

Zorko still not playing, appeared to be limping
Mathieson not playing second week in a row
Intensity picked up this week
Cockatoo played entire game
Rayner looked very good
Answerth looked best on ground
The crazy Jo show continued
Dev Robo and Harry Sharp played senior team
Prior and McFadden dropped back to reserves team
Payne looked a little more energetic this week
Tom Berry took Lyons after disposing the ball, Neal was upset with this a bit of remonstrating, McFadden then took exception with Neal
Blake Coleman look as very unfit and a long way off

Attended training today.
Big hit out, skills then onto 16 v 16 full contact match sim.
The boys looked good out there.
Here are 5 take away points, plus my rd 1 team
1. Rowell looks ready, he is no longer holding himself back, hard into the contest, clean hands. Total workhorse all day, dare I say, back to his 2020 form
2. Chol continues to improve on his fitness, almost there. Come round 1, I’d expect him to be available for selection in our forward line.
3. Buds, Thompson and Witts integrating back into full loads. Will feel like 3 new crucial recruits.
4. Sandy Brock and Mac Andrew are super exciting. I would expect to see game time from one, if not both of them in 2022.
Sandy has a killer left boot, super silky, agile and presents hard at the ball for a slight frame, has the potential to be an Elite player.
Mac holds his own more than I expected, his vertical leap is out of this world, overhead, no one comes close to him, he can out run and out jump his opponent, very elusive and nimble. So exciting to watch every time the ball comes his way, one to watch.
5. For the first time, we have genuine competition in all parts of the ground, bunch of really high quality players will be fighting for game time. Bring on 2022!
N.B. Notably present today was Tom Boswell and Cal Twomey. I’d expect Cal to be quite complimentary of our boys after today, he was impressed with a lot of them (especially Noah)
My starting 22 for round 1
Collins. Lemmens. Weller
Ballard. Powell. Buds
Witts. Rowell. Anderson
Touk. Ellis. Sharp
Holman. King. Lukosius
Ainsworth. Chol. Izak
Int: Oleg. Fiorini. Swallow. Davies
Subs: Flanders/Corbett

Haven't seen Davies in many teams. Mid rookie gun. 😆

Trying to track 7 Sun players preseason and only one of them appears in that Best 22 could be a worrying sign.
