@Bomber18

Was there any info from the bombers scratch matches confirming Kelly’s role as the lockdown defender thus making Ridley free to zone off/ read the play & intercept mark?

Some comments here from J Kelly on his role at 1:50 or so.

Does mention that he’s working with Ridley to help them position so that Ridley can “do what he wants to do up the ground”.

Would require a bit of a step up imo as Doedee was often left to man the 3rd tall ahead of Kelly for the Crows.
Yeah, Ridley a wait for me. Does sound like they want Ridley back to intercept role/3rd tall. However, expect he see a reduction in kick in opportunities compared to pre concussion levels, if end of season anything to go by.

Lot of moving parts with the Bombers back line. I believe Francis was playing forward in the intra-club iirc so that's one domino. Hind/Heppell both make a lot of sense further up the ground, I expect perhaps one of them to push up this year, which would leave a better fantasy balance of rebounders and would definitely bring Ridley back to the top of the pack.

The balance will be very interesting. Do they go Stewart/Laverde/Kelly/Ridley or does Stewart drop out and play a bit more mobile. Which of Durham, Hind, Heppell, Redman, Gleeson and Cutler make up the smalls. Hind and Heppell definitely hurt Ridley, Redman steals kick-ins, the others would be much more preferable for his fantasy scoring.

There's a 110 player in there if the balance is right and there's a low 90s player in there if it's like the end of last season. If that range can tighten favourably, he becomes a lock for me, if it doesn't then it's a much more speculative pick.

Defenders are such an interesting group in general. My uncertainty is probably why I've found myself so quickly locking in Lloyd for the first time in a while. I can make such strong for/against cases for Ridley, Whitfield, Sicily, Ryan, Short, Crisp, Stewart and more than a few others which always makes me conflicted

When I'm realistically targeting 105+ as expected D6 this year that also doesn't help as I need to believe they're going to hit that!

agree with all this. If Redman went down and Ridley was taking KI's I would have greater confidence in that higher score. Think the intercept game will come back and the concussion often leads to 3-4 poor scores. Hind/Heppell may also help if they give Ridley a target.

Lloyd (plus Hall) are locked. Dawson/Short keep mixing it up at D3. Stewart will be there if he looks like he has had a preseason and I can afford him, consistent scorer and amazing to watch as he rebounds.

Sicily same concerns you have plus he sometimes gets locked down which doesn't help. Short could attract the tag whereas whilst Dawson has moved to a weak team, his elite kicking should see them want to get the ball in his hand, wing looks good and mid time should help rather than hinder.

Whitfield a hard one for me - I avoided him when he came back last year and he threw up some poor scores toward the end. Injury prone given his is wafer thin. Starting at beginning of the year so dicey. Whilst he may be 75k under valued you also feel there will be a bad game somewhere in the year when you can bring him in.

Short probably ok, may receive 2-3 tags in the year, doubt more than that.

I think if you like Whitfield you start him. Can't see how waiting for a down game makes him more palatable.

I can skip his injury games and usually low score in that game and see how he is playing when he comes back!

His game count going backwards is 15 (missed 1 post returning), 17, 16, 22, 15, 19, 21,11, 19.

I can see this thinking with some players who always seem to miss a game or two each year. It's like they just needed a little break. But I don't think the little break makes Whitfield less likely to miss more games and he's already pretty cheap for what he can produce.

Whitfield is a start or pass.

If he stays healthy and plays 22 games he's almost certainly going to be scoring 105+, he's too talented not to. His starting price will be as cheap as he gets if you actually want him at all.

It's really just a case of is the ~15 points of value enough to o***et the horrid durability record. For mine he's right on the edge in that question.

If you're not willing to start him at 15 points of value, I can't see how you'd be willing to trade into him on the same sort of equation.

He's also more likely to start big when he's fresh and fit than to score big once he starts to be dinged up, assuming the idea you grab him after he has a bad game.

I currently have him 3rd among the defenders but I'd be very happy for a few of the other guys to push him down. Whitfield's equation can only get worse (preseason niggles), I know what he is when fit pretty much regardless of his exact role.

Guys I can see pushing him down include Dale (intercept), Ridley (KI, intercept, primary rebounding role back), Ryan (looking fit), Short (just safer), Crisp (not even sure which role I want but role certainty...), Stewart (looking fit), Dawson (same as Crisp), Williams (looking fit, role), Sicily (role and other players' roles) and there will probably be a couple of others who stick their hands up.

Rich, Ziebell and maybe Heppell are the only guys I'm not really looking at right now as starting picks and Heppell I definitely think I probably should be!

Think it will take a fair bit to dislodge Hall from #1 for me and Lloyd from #2.

Heppell is on the record saying that he will play sometimes on a wing this season, which makes sense.

Hind was sometimes used as a swingman up fwd late last season IIRC, so could be shuffled up the ground too.

For me Whitfield and Sicily are bang for your buck and worth the risk IMO. If we had 30 trades I would only pick one but that’s not the case.
Both gone over 100 twice and the 150k you save by picking them helps heaps.

Regarding Whitfield, he's not even on my 'for consideration' list, based on @wogitalia comment in the Defender-Discussion Thread #65 .

"......Whitfield we need to see where his role settles. He scores fairly consistently across them and is underpriced regardless but his durability is pretty terrible, the concussions are a MAJOR concern given how many he's had and how incredibly soft most of them have been, basically if his head gets brushed he's done at this point......."

Collingwood. Post by Jen2310 from Bfooty.

Pre-season Training report: Saturday Feb 5th, 2022.

Duration: About 3 hrs.
Players: Everyone bar Roughy and Maynard.

It was about 8:20am, or so and I decided just to head over (was planning on coming back) if anyone was around, as Jordy had posted a picture of vic park at around 7am, I didn't expect to discover not were they around, but were starting to warm up. So no point in going home, so decided to stay from that point on.

Ended roughly 3 hrs later @ 11:20

They started with their usual warm ups, and a sprint test.
There were three players that got personal bests. First up, Arlo Draper; which he would be chuffed about given how behind he is on his fitness.
Followed by J.Daicos, and mr reliable, Pendlebury.
The boys applauded for all three for their personal achievements.

It was some drills involving tackling and marking next.
While the umpires arrived, and they got the group together to explain the new rules, showing them how they will be implemented.

Next drill was handballing the ball when its hot, and has to be clean.
During this drill, Fly wasn't happy and goes "Hold on. What kind of team are we?"
You could be forgiven to think this was Bolton as it's something you'd usually hear him say, but it definitely was not Bolton. You can tell the difference, and Bolton has a different tone about him.

Match play began from throw ins. Originally I thought this was the only type of match sim play they would be doing, but that was not the case. As the real stuff began at 10.
They used this play to transition the ball in the manner they prefer.

Conditioning was next up. A few of the mids were told to line up in two lines; facing one another. Then they were instructed to get on all fours and crawl like a crab, tap each other's hands, then back again. The same again, they get up then tackle each other to the ground.

This sounds like something Wade learnt from his NRL days haha.

Noble/McCreery, Crisp/Ginnivan did some exhausting by the looks of it, drill where they had to keep after your opponent, stop him at all costs. Pushing, getting in front.

Other players (Nick, Beggy, Johnson, Draper, Murley, Dean, Harrison and Murphy) did some running.
Speaking of Murphy. He did majority of the 3 hr session was running, they pushed him to the brink as he gets back to fitness following his broken ribs injury.

Bit of play from the back half.

Then comes 10am, match sim.

I'd say they probably two 2 halves. Lasted about an hour, I'd estimated.

I thought Jordy played mostly forward, but after reviewing some of the footage, I think he spent more time in the midfield than I originally thought. But he was down forward a great deal too.
Lippa was majority mid. After the session, I met him and he mentioned (after I asked) he would be playing majority as a inside mid.

The mids that were seen for the black team were: Adams, Crisp (more mid time today than in recent weeks), De Goey, Lippa. Elliott was involved in some centre bounces. Josh and Sidey were the wingers. Grundy as the ruck.

White team:
Tyler, Macrae (who was a quiet day) Cal, Reef at times. With Poulter and Arlo on the wings Begg/Cameron rucking

With both Bianco and Ginnivan in team A and McCreery in Team B, would that mean he is behind those two? I found that interesting. But Ginnivan has been strong all pre-season.

Elliott and De goey were dangerous up forward, along with Ginnivan for the black team. Kelly kicked a nice goal for the other team, and took some nice marks today. Looked more confident.
Kreuger too was presenting well, with some nice contested marks himself. Missed the shot at goal though, but it did look like from a long way out.

Grundy dominated the day. Around the world, and when he pushed up forward.

Cox was moving well, and timing his lead to perfection. Cameron too took some good marks, and seemed to be used as more of a ruck than a forward.
I felt for Cox's opponents, usually either Wilson or Ruscoe. Bit of a height difference there. Would have been better to put McMahon or Dean on him, even though neither would have been a match.

McMahon was on Checkers, who gave him some lessons to be learned haha. Opponents would be swapped. Madgen was on checkers after a while. Moore on Henry/Krueger.

Adams was pretty active himself throughout the midfield.

Dean battled pretty well I thought, even though his team was the dominant one, as you would have expected.

It was a decent hitout nonetheless. I imagine they'll start to increase these match sims over the next couple weeks. Then probably an official intra club a week prior to the practice game?

Oh, and Jack Macrae was sitting watching his bro. He also mentioned Lippa is a gun.

I was also at this training watching and what i can say is
Pendules played half back both halves and was taking all the kicks ins

Ndaicos half back as well with little spurts in the middle, (they try and get it into both he’s and pendules hands at very opportunity)

Degeoy did what he wants had 4 shots at goal some eye catching clearances if you had to pick a best on it would have been him (but he was playing against the brown brothers, macrae and reef, in the middle and than madgen when he was deep forward) so will have much harder competition in the real stuff

Reef looked great he doesn’t have a tank to play full time mid yet but when he was in there he hits the ball with pace and took it up to Adam’s Degeoy crisp and lipinski at times with a couple of clean clearances, also loves to tackle and is dangerous when sitting forward with he’s marking ability if he gets games early will defiantly get Dpp

Lipisnki moves well and was linking up in all the plays has a great tank and doesn’t stop running

Finn was quite that day but has been very impressive all preseason in similar match sim drills

Ginnivan looks great lock him rd 1 probaly not super coach relivent at he’s price but he does look great

Same with Will Kelly very fit and quick off the mark took some good grabs

sidey played full time wing done some nice things I can see him getting that average back in the 90s

Adam’s Moore Howe Elliot Grundy all these lads looked fit and ready to go done some good things but the most important thing with all them is they all look fit there role is not changing you know what you get from them I guess a important thing to note was Grundy rucked both halves on he’s own in the black as Cameron was on the white so will be interesting to see in the practice games when they are in the same team what the split is there
