@Bomber18

Was there any info from the bombers scratch matches confirming Kelly’s role as the lockdown defender thus making Ridley free to zone off/ read the play & intercept mark?
Haven’t seen a specific comment on this in the Dons training reports but I’m certain that this will be the case, just need to wait for some more official pre season games for the vision!

Haven't seen Davies in many teams. Mid rookie gun. 😆
Loved his game last year, shame it wrecks his price a fair bit but he looked very ready for the AFL and had a great bit of size to him. He showed solid forward craft which is a win and lose type thing, win because it makes being in the side much more likely, lose because if he's stuck there in what still looks one of the weakest sides then it will really hurt the scoring potential.

At 200k you want to have a pretty good pathway to 70+ which I don't think exists as primarily a forward, be really nice if he looked to be stealing the Greenwood minutes though, he's got similar size so could definitely be an option there.

Interesting Baby averaged 57.25 over his last 4 games.

Probably need 75-80 minimum at his starting price though.
Apparently has bulked up a bit which may help + Wing role somewhat helps I guess if he was forward last year when not getting mid time.

Agree though you will want to see 75 ave which hasn't been showed cased in this intra club game.

Don’t like the sounds of de Joey playing forward
It adds a lot more external factors to his scoring, aka the team needing to be a lot better moving the ball (which does seem to be Macrae's focus). Ideally you want that more pure midfield role he finished last year with where you can basically back him to score regardless of results.

Basically becomes a 90-100 target instead of 105+ if it's 30/70 M/F and those are the ideal results ignoring for failure which is definitely possible given his durability record.

Took me so long to work out who Baby Care was  He'd be relevant in the right role but as bad as the Pies were last year they're not a bottom 4 list in my eyes, they've actually got a lot of good players and have to think they're trying to win so it's just hard to squeeze too many names into breakout roles/scoring situations. Adams, Steele, Pendles, Daicos x2, De Goey, Crisp, Maynard and Lipinski is a really solid midfield group to pick you 6 or so from each game and that ignores the Brown boys who've been consistently ahead of the kids in the past or even a guy like Elliott who has at times pushed through and a new coach might like in that role.

Also everything Macrae has said is that their focus is on winning midfield ball and getting it forward as much as possible, which would be the obvious approach with a poor forward line and distinct lack of good forward targets which is what made Buck's absurdly slow ball movement and disdain for midfield dominance such a weird tactical move last year.

Collingwood - BF TradeDraft

I got there at 10 so I did not see much of the Training but I did see the Game they Played.

My Thoughts:

  • Our 2 Traded Player Lipinski and Kreuger where both Very Good. Lipinksi gets lot of the Ball and is Clean. Kreuger took some Good Strong Marks and Kicked a Goal(I Think) and made lot of Contests
  • Did not see a Ton of Nick Daicos but when I did his Ball Use was all Class. Like the play of the Game when Nick got the Ball and Took the Game On and Hit his Forward Target
  • McMahon played down back and looked like Someone one who not played there much. Gave a Few Push in the Back Frees away
  • No Injuries was good
  • Poulter had up and down game. Few times in 1st Qtr(out of 2) he turned the ball over by trying to hit a Target from a Mark/Free Kick but looked better in 2nd Qtr when he took the Game on
  • Grundy looks to be lot more Fit then he has in last Few Seasons and Moving well
  • There where quite a Few Turnovers by Foot
  • Great to see the Game at Vic Park

It's such autopilot with how many times I've typed Macrae

I need to be better than that, I loved Craig as a player back in the day, was so silky.

Haven't seen much posted on the Swans intra - some vision below which does show Buddy moving well and Heeney playing some midfield minutes but really not much to take away.

My takeaways watching that:

Gulden - Midfield minutes, he's going to be a fantasy slut one day, I wouldn't bet against it being this year but probably a year or two early but the year he shifts to midfield from a mix is going to be a premium season.

Reid - Playing in defense quite clearly. Makes sense as I don't see where he fits in the forwards given he's too unreliable to build anything around and we really do need some competition for the 2nd tall defender role and, if fit, he's probably the best of the lot. Paddy McCartin and Melican the other two to provide a genuine KPD option alongside TCart who has one spot locked up.

McDonald - Forward on what looked to be the strongest team, Parker the only guy who is clear best 22 I saw in the other side and that's probably so the younger mids can get a real hitout. Hopefully with a full preseason in him he's ready to take the league by storm, kid is an absolute stud.

Stephens - Only notice of him was at the clearance on a wing, makes me think he's on the wing. Hopefully that's his role, could be a huge on-field rookie in that role.

Blakey - Clearly off half back also, great to see as he looked really good in that role last year. He's definitely capable of a Bailey Dale type season and he'll 100% go for every intercept touch he can find if in the role, especially in the air, and should provide serious rebound. If he wasn't made of cracked porcelain I'd be much more inclined to pick him.

Kennedy - The only times I saw him were forward, which has been rumoured so stacks up.

Obviously it's a short highlight package so not much to be taken from it, just things I noticed that are of note.

Match sim recap: Saints dial it up as Round 1 draws closer
Bradley Hill, captain Jack Steele and draftee Mitch Owens were among the Saints to catch the eye at this morning's match simulation session at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
By Chris Nice on Jan 28, 2022, 2:03pm

Kanye West may want a few dates shuffled to suit his potential tour down under, but as far as St Kilda is concerned, its schedule isn’t budging as the club reaches less than 50 days before Round 1.

Muggy conditions and thunderclouds set the scene for this morning’s 18-on-18 match simulation at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval, with both sides bolstered by members of VFL affiliate, Sandringham as well as assistant coaches Jake Batchelor and Jarryd Roughead.
The Saints suited up for three 18-minute blocks under the unusually still - but uncomfortably hot – bayside conditions, with only a handful of points separating the two by the end of the modified hitout.

Draftee Mitch Owens was a noticeable presence at centre bounces, lining up against captain Jack Steele at numerous stoppages. Owens, taken at pick No. 33 at last year’s National Draft, formed part of a midfield brigade of Zak Jones and Rowan Marshall, while Steele was flanked by Paddy Ryder, Brad Crouch and Ryan Byrnes.Bradley Hill and Jack Sinclair provided plenty of ammunition and precise kicking off half-back, while Nick Coffield – who ticked all the right boxes this pre-season – was kept busy with his opponent, Jack Higgins (two goals).

Josh Battle was another to slot into the defensive line-up with Sinclair, Hill and Coffield. The versatile Saint, who suffered a bone stress ankle injury last season, was given the task of quelling Tim Membrey for almost the entirety of proceedings.
It left leaders Callum Wilkie and Dougal Howard to grapple Cooper Sharman and Max King respectively, and the opposing backline of Tom Highmore, Jimmy Webster and Darragh Joyce to handle Mason Wood, Max Heath and Ben Long.

Category B Rookie Josiah Kyle again showed glimpses through his forward pressure, which was again prominent despite copping several hard knocks.
Jade Gresham was one of a number of Saints to be on lighter duties throughout the morning, with Jack Billings, Seb Ross, Jarryn Geary, Dean Kent and draftee Marcus Windhager taking part in their own programs under the eye of Head of High Performance and Conditioning, Nick Walsh.
Dan Hannebery, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Leo Connolly, Tom Campbell, Jack Peris, Jack Bytel and Oscar Adams also completed their respective programs; all of which were made up of a series of gruelling running sessions around the oval. The full squad completed its own conditioning block immediately after match simulation.

St Kilda will face its first full test in an upcoming practice match against Carlton, with a preceding intra-club outing shaping as an ideal lead-in before the full opposition hitout.

Hill off half back is definitely an interesting option in SC, showed some potential to score very well doing it last year, I can't trust him because he's too damn flaky but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's in the 90s!
