Position 2022: Forward Discussion

Has anyone looked at Jack Graham this season? I'd kinda written him off as a solid hardworking type who suits the Richmond system. Runs hard both ways, tackles, lack polish or hurt factor. His scoring last season was all over the shop, 3 scores 120+ and 3 scores in the 40s. He only had more than 23 disposals twice, 33 disposals/120 SC and 36/154.

The scoring potential is clearly there, he can certainly rack up touches and tackles. The problem is that Graham is the sort of player who needs to do that to score well because he's not going to do any damage by foot and doesn't win much contested ball. That makes him hard to pick in a very SC unfriendly Richmond system unless he looks like getting more of an inside role this season. Last year Graham's CBA% only exceeded 40 in three games despite all the problems Richmond had with their midfield. That makes me wonder whether the coaches at Richmond think Graham just isn't much of a contested ball winner.

His role is worth monitoring, but for now the likes of Butters/Thomas/Bailey are more appealing (not including Heeney who I'm staying away from).

Edit: Looks he's having a disrupted preseason with some sort of injury.

Graham will be an option once we lose a few mids to old age.

Forwards going 110+

Might be more viable starting the likes of Bailey & Thomas in the mids then upgrading the likes of Coniglio & Curnow to premium mids at the appropriate time.

Macrae , Neale , 2 -3 F/M , Caldwell/Berry type (or bypass ) + rookies

Pump the money into defence

Looks like Weller will be playing down back in that seagull mode. His price is really awkward though and for not much more you have the Heeney, TT, Butters, De Goey types.

I'm not sold on Dunkley yet, Duncan has PS issues, I have Dusty at F1 then De Goey, TT, Heeney, Cogs and Curnow.

Weller could rival all of those players in the role that he has ATS.

Looks like Weller will be playing down back in that seagull mode. His price is really awkward though and for not much more you have the Heeney, TT, Butters, De Goey types.

I'm not sold on Dunkley yet, Duncan has PS issues, I have Dusty at F1 then De Goey, TT, Heeney, Cogs and Curnow.

Weller could rival all of those players in the role that he has ATS.

Thoughts?

With his DPP status unlikely to change this year (M/F) ... might be the one I need to let go ...

- Hard to find room for him in my current FWD line set up .... already currently running Cogs at F6 ...

Yep he's been in rehab group all summer,not a starting option

Yes, his DPP can't change until next year, what do you see as his scoring range? I'm thinking 95-105

I've dug into my records and have this as his last two seasons worth of SC stats (noting that 2020 were shorter quarters)

Can't comment on Graham and Weller, haven't really considered them, although Graham looks like a maybe.

Yes Butters, Heeney, Tarryn, Zailey can all average 90 - 110. My concerns with them respectively are:

Butters - (1) Injury concern (2) Actual midfield ability
Heeney - (1) Injury concern
Tarryn - (1) Lack of midfield time (Greenwood, Cunnington, Simpkin, LDU are all MIDs only. Anderson also can't play anywhere else if hes best 22. Stephenson, Powell, Phillips and JHF will take minor minutes. So essentially Tarryn is at best 5th in line, but even that spot is being contested by a group of 4-5 midfielders)
Zailey - (1) Role concern

At this stage I have it as Heeney > Tarryn > Butters > Zailey.

Thomas could be good early in the year but at the end of the day you are picking a premium for a 22 round season, cant help but think he fades if Cunnington and Anderson return at some stage.

Yes, ribs for De Goey (thinking ribs for dinner actually) and an adductor for Martin, both will have interrupted PS's which is a worry, but I'm assuming both will be ok come rnd 1

Hugo Ralphsmith apparently best on in the Tigers intraclub and playing the Houli role. Just chucked him in instead of Rayner and was able to make J.Short to Touk and my team looks so much better. Probably wait and see for the AAMI games but should be one to watch.

He was good but he's far from a Rd1 certainly,plenty lining up for that role

If you have Cunnington and Anderson with the rest of their inside brigade fit youve got to move a Simpkin type to a recieiving role though, very quickly doesn't become a spot for Thomas for mine, at least not in the starting midfield which you really want from a premium.

Not necessarily needed for a Fwd though, Mid definitely.

I find it hard to see Weller immediately swooping in ahead of the established rebounders in Powell and Markov.

Dunkley - Was pure mid to start the season, worth noting that Treloar had a very interrupted preseason.

If the role is doubtful, where he's a proven low 90s or worse guy, then the terrible durability record definitely comes in to play and there's strong reason to avoid him.

He's a really hard one, contract year and they want to keep him but on paper he doesn't fit their midfield, his problem is he's the best forward of the group other than Bont.

I agree with most of what @wogitalia had to say about Josh Dunkley.
I have followed Dunks very closely and he has been a great asset for us all the way through - a premiership player from Year 1.
He really shines as a mid-fielder, but IMO is quite limited as a forward.
He doesn't kick many goals, his kicking is average and he's not fast, so not a threat as a forward.
His big SC scores are built on tackling and very high possession counts - he gets to every stoppage and is so often the link-man in a chain of clearance possessions.
I've picked him for the last 3 years, but I'm waiting to see how he shapes this season - want to see his role & be sure he isn't still impacted from that shoulder injury last year.
