It has now become a joke, as we've been waiting 3 years for him to debut. Apparently the dude that wrote the original article is thinking he'll play this year, or was it tongue in cheek.
The strange part is that he is in one of a few teams that will play and back their rookies in for a decent run of games .... if good enough ..

- can never fault Horse for Hinkley for that ...
- my second team is the Swans by nature of the state I live in ...

I mean he could, generally it's not a terrible sign if you stick on the list this long but I can't see the best 22 spot at this point in time, maybe as a big bodied inside mid but seems a real long shot.

My team at the moment, welcome any thoughts!

I rate the Polec pick, LMac slated to move back to their backline opens up the wing for him again, they've also lost Dumont who played on a wing. Given a decent run, he's an 80ppg player at minimum. You can't read much into intraclub games but he was also the standout in North's one.

Any suggestions welcome. Parish and Brayshaw are pods in the right age bracket, will pick up Macrae later on.
I don't want any low scoring rookies or players with questionable job security on the field or and I want players that are picked every week to compensate for losing players to covid.
It is a bit mid- pricey but that helps with depth this year.

With practice games starting tomorrow I thought I should share the team I've settled on at the moment and get some feedback

Rookies:
All selections based on training and intraclub reports, all are a mix of what I think are the best rd1 chances + scoring ability + value for money

Def:
Lloyd, Dawson, Short first picked, they all have upside from their starting price
Young is my breakout candidate. Averaged 90 last year excluding injury and return games and 98 in the last 4. Has a great role across half back plus some talk of some mid time sprinkled in. If he can start getting some kick ins (had barely any last year), which he should as he is the best kick in their team, I can see him going to 100 avg, just needs to stay on the park now

Mid:
Macrae, Steele, Neale first picked, they need no explanation
Petracca has upside from his starting price, averaged 124 after the bye last year when he stopped spending so much time parked forward, and all it takes is a bit cleaner disposal and he can improve on that 124. See him as a genuine 130 candidate

Ruck:
Darcy and Grundy haven't changed for me at all, both 130 candidates. Darcy's scoring ability overrides his injury concern for me

Forwards:
Dunkley is a bit of a defensive pick because of his ownership, would like this to be butters but if Dunkley comes out like he did last year then will be starting well behind. In saying that I may be forced to change this to Butters depending on rd1 rookie selections if I need $
Thomas and Heeney both have had good preseasons, both should be around 70 mid/30 forward split, both ooze class, easy picks for me based on reports we've gotten so far
Cogs and Curnow are the forward mid price options with the best scoring history and all reports are they have had good preseasons so they're who I'm going with for those spots

Relying on 5 X $ 102,400.00 stands out to me and with little cash to fix them if they don't show.

If Preuss is behind Flynn everything will need changing.

English is interesting given all the recent talk on Bailey , Butters , de Goey , Graham , Heeney , Thomas types recently.

Probably 9 definite premiums so I guess depends on how many of the mid pricers work

Think this setup totally relies on a playing rookie at F6 , otherwise everything else is extremely strong.

Enjoyed reading your reasonings behind your selections.

Preuss needs to be picked even if on the bench imo Besides that I like your pods.

Certainly no expert on Hawthorn's Best 22 but where is the room from last season for all of Long (starting to get good reports) MacDonald , Maginness , Ward etc.

Obviously Sicily is a automatic inclusion , imagine if Gunston is fit he is Best 22 again.

Who did they lose from last season apart from Silk ? (my memory is fading)

Understand they have 2-3 touch and go for Round 1 , be nothing worse than pick the wrong Hawthorn rookie(s) and they are all gone by Round 3-4.

I guess if they are named Round 1 just need to perform and force the coach to drop someone else when injured players return.

The 5 x $102,000 players all look likely at this stage. If I need more cash I will drop Raynor.

Thought I'd post my pre-practice matches side so I can see how much of the hype I follow from the next few weeks of games.

Defenders
Heppell the most interesting selection on this line, think he has upside with a full pre-season under his belt and think his role doesn't have many question marks around it. Lloyd and Whitfield fairly vanilla selections and think they are worthy of this. Whitfield has plenty of upside and has shown the ability to score in multiple roles. Lloyd is the king seagull and is as safe as houses. Can not ignore the potential mid minutes for Hewett and with Walsh out for early in the season hoping he can really take advantage early on. Ziebell, Stewart, Crisp, Dawson, Ridley, Dale, Sicily and Clark all on the watchlist.

Midfielders
Think Steele will be the number 1 mid this season so have to start him. Titch finished off the season nicely and I think will build on this going into this year. Guthrie the real unique selection here but really think he can hit 120 which he showed either side of his shoulder injury hampering him last year. A lot of rookies here, will likely need to flip the rookies around come round 1. Macrae, Miller, Oliver, Bont, Lair, Parish, Petracca, Brayshaw, Kelly, Neale, Adams, Yeo and Cripps all on the watchlist.

Rucks
Setting and forgetting with Darcy and Grundy. Both have the most upside from the big 4 IMO so hard to go past them. Preuss on the bench but could easily flip to R2 if another rookie ruck appears. Gawn, Naitanui, Marshall, Draper, Jackson and Witts on the watchlist.

Forwards
Big reason for not taking Macrae is my belief that Dunkley will have a massive season and steal some of his points. The famed mid time for Heeney and Butters is hard to ignore but plenty of options at that price. Coniglio a lock, while not sold on Curnow and McCartin they can easily be flipped around for others. Treloar, De Goey, Bailey, Thomas, Bolton, Anderson and Weller all on the watchlist.

Thought Uwland was injured or playing with the possibles.

I guess Greenwood's departure opens up a spot for Constable (maybe read a HB spot) , Davies , Hollands (also with the possibles) or Tsitas.

Not sure how close Long is , but gaining more mentions the last few days.

Bulldogs playing first helps , if Parker is named I think he will be in 100% of teams in case we don't get anyone else.

Plenty of time to change things in any case.

Yes everything changes once Round 1 selections are announced.
Last year i picked too many dud rookies named in the Friday/Saturday games.
