Crows vs Lions

General - Watched 3 quarters only, as it was getting really ugly and the Crows were fielding a shadow team which made it kind of useless to try and read much into it. Wet weather footy which made it interesting and more useful than most games as it kind of forces the contest. Was a pretty one-sided game as you'd expect from the teams playing and picked.

CBA
Crows

Crouch - 15
Laird - 15
Schoenberg - 12
Berry - 11
Hately - 7
Pedlar - 5
Keays - 7 (All in Q3 when Crouch was on minutes limit)

Lions
Neale - 17
Rayner - 11
Bailey - 11
Clug - 11
Lyons - 11
Berry - 9
Cockatoo - 2
Rucks - Genuine 50/50

Kick-ins
Rich - 100%

Macpherson - 5
Jones - 2
Hinge -1
Davis - 1 (stinker on the first and didn't take another)

Crows - Honestly had too many missing to really gauge anything from this match. When missing that many midfielders and key players it's just impossible as the flow on effect is a) no idea where other players will play and b) they get smashed so badly that you can't really see a lot of many. I thought they were gallant though, which is something.

Fantasy relevant again...

Jones - Draft only but HB and was solid.

Keays - Played forward the entire first half with limited midfield bursts, zero CB, when Crouch went onto minute limits in the 3rd he went into the middle, wasn't a great sign that the Lions then piled on a ton of goals on the back of repeat CB clearances! Still can't kick and is the obvious guy to reduce midfield minutes to me.

Crouch - Minute limitation is enough for me to put the line through him. He played very well though and was their leading CBA guy at HT.

Hately - The role was fine but just couldn't find the ball. Not sure what happened to the kid at GWS who couldn't get away from it. A cross next to his name from this game.

Thilthorpe - Outmatched by Andrews but was solid in the contest.

Rachele - Role is not good but it's not terrible. Was a genuine HF rather than pocket and did have some freedom to roam, even got to the back pocket a few times. He oozes class with the ball, especially good at the in close handball while being tackled. I think this game was a big tick for him as a player but at his price with that role I'd still rather take someone else. JS should be good though, already got more tricks than their other forwards.

Pedlar - Solid midfield minutes but like Hately he really failed to make it count, obviously they're outclassed but wanted to see more from him. A dash for mine, as just can't read anything unfortunately.

Soligo - Started on the wing and first couple of touches came quick and were decent. Struggled mightily from there and probably took another quarter and a half to get the next two. Some signs but, like Pedlar, mark incomplete.

Taylor - Did a couple of nice things but didn't seem to play much at all.

Hinge - Role was good, laid several fantastic tackles, great sign for a guy with heavy shoulder strapping and coming back from major shoulder issues. Interesting to see a relatively poor kick in MacPherson taking kick-ins over him, not a great sign, albeit MacPherson continually running into trouble and kicking long should be the end of it for him. I thought it was a tick but the fantasy score will be pretty poor unless he junked hard. Probably got 30 from tackles though factoring in the couple of HTB he also won.

Berry - Another who had a great role and didn't cash in. Same story as the other kids.

Schoenberg - Role was really good but also didn't have much impact. Looking for statements from those guys on the fringe of the midfield to demand the minutes and he was another who really failed to make any statement.

Laird - Battled well without help but was quiet by his standards, hard to judge when the midfield gets smashed so thoroughly though.

Davis - Playing HB, did a couple of nice things but, like so many Crows, just not enough in what's probably a limited audition.

ROB - He looked alright but, broken record, didn't do much and definitely wasn't demanding selection. Strachan took a significantly high amount of the ruckwork as well.

Strachan - Seemed to be playing off the bench, never a great sign for a 2nd ruck but also not a good sign for the first ruck as generally only see this from legit ruck battles. He was solid, ROB was better though.

Lions - Absolutely smashed them, Fa gan was pretty true to his word with midfield mix and it worked. Coleman and Zorko near term best 22 guys missing so reckon we got a really strong indicator of how things go. Zorko is a significant curve ball though as where he slots in changes things for a lot of players.

Daniher - Was dominant up forward, genuinely wouldn't surprise me if he goes 90+ this year, loved how he went about it.

Robinson - He's not done yet, was very good on a wing.

Clug - Started HF, roamed freely from there, mostly wing but also a solid amount of CBA, to be fair he was inflated in this area by being in there for what was basically ~5 straight CB clearance goals to the Lions in about a 4 minute period, absolute onslaught. Looked decent but nothing in his role that I'd say was "positive", for mine this game was an x despite playing well.

Berry - This is what I'm looking for when I say a "fringe" midfielder needs to demand his spot. I'd say he was best on ground by a decent margin, dominated clearances, tackled like every Crow had stolen his dog and just went hammer and tong. Looks very fit, ran really hard. Role was as expected, started on the wing and rotated through genuine mid, wing and HF, basically he and Clug rotated through those spots for the most part. One of the firmest ticks I've jotted down from a preseason game.

Neale - Another firm tick here. Midfield role was clean, rested forward a bit and wont get that kind of supply usually but was playing with a dry ball out there, so clean, covering the ground really well. Just looked tip top.

Rich - Took every kick-in I believe, copped a big knock but was back on a couple of minutes later. Genuinely could score even better this year and another big tick.

Madden - Did nothing wrong at HB, also did nothing to demand a spot. Was just solid.

Rayner - This was an interesting game. Role was as advertised but he basically looked best when forward. I have to say that my physical assessment was "he looks chunky" but he does have a weird body shape so that doesn't help. Struggled early to find the ball despite the excellent role, did build into it in the 3rd when the dominance hit red levels. For mine this was a dash game, the role was a tick, the outcome of the role a cross, would hope for more in a whitewash as well. I reckon one of those games where if you wanted to pick him you'd have seen plenty and if you didn't want to pick him you'd have seen plenty and if you're neutral you're utterly confused.

Lyons - Clear loser in the midfield talk, forward a lot, not in the CB an awful lot (he's another a bit inflated by 3rd quarter flurry). He played well but there definitely seems to be a conscious shift towards the more dynamic and explosive guys and he's clearly behind Neale.

Bailey - As advertised, like Rayner I think he did more damage as a forward though than as a mid, a couple of nice breaking clearances but mostly kind of got lost a bit. For mine their best mids are still quite clearly Berry, Neale, Lyons and Clug but Bailey is only going to learn it by being around it. Did some really nice things. Reckon there's a 90+ season in him without any real role change and if he can cash in the 100 range is definitely possible. I do think he's behind a couple of the other names still though, mostly because of who he's fighting for midfield scraps.

Fort - Stole a lot of OMc's work. Was a genuine 50/50 of ruck CBA. Playing forward a good sign for his role and terrible for OMc. Thought he was really solid and Strachan is better than almost any 2nd ruck he will face so that's a good takeaway.

Answerth - Playing wing mostly, was really, really solid. Kicked a couple of goals. Hard part for him is how many other guys played wing and were better, not sure they can all fit in. Probably would have been better if he was HB where there is a clearer chance at a spot but the versatility doesn't hurt at all.

Wilmot - Perhaps the most impressive of all the Lions, there's not a lot of him but he laid several crunching tackles and plays well above his weight. Great speed and looks to have a very classy right peg on him. Wish we knew for sure where Zorko fits in, maybe back round 1 I guess, and Coleman as well but I thought he was significantly better than Madden and better than Answerth, who are probably in a 3 way battle for a spot. Looked capable of very decent fantasy scoring. JS will be suspect I guess but if he plays like that it wont. Big tick.

As usual, any other names then just @ me :)

Swans vs Giants

General - I only watched the first 2 periods because it genuinely was filmed on a potato and was a) painful to watch and b) really hard to distinguish anything that was happening. Really solid intensity to the game, both teams hitting in nice and hard. Nothing really stood out tactically, Giants still really committed to trying to go over the top, Swans kicked long a lot but tried to go short when in control, aka same as last year for both sides really. I've intentionally avoided the thread so if there are injuries I'm not aware of then put lines through anyone!

CBA
Take these with a grain of salt as really hard to tell guys apart, Hopper might actually be Green, I don't know

Swans
Warner - 9
Parker - 11
Heeney - 10
Stephens - 1
Florent - 4
Gulden - 1
Rowbottom - 2
McInerney - 1

Giants
Taranto - 6
Hopper - 3?
Coniglio - 8
Ward - 9
Kelly - 4
Green - 5
Ash - 3
Hill - 1

Kick-Ins
Sydney

Lloyd - 3
Campbell - 3
Blakey - 1

Giants

Whitfield - 3
Perryman - 1
Couldn't tell - The rest(think Perryman and Whitfield though)

Swans - Firsts, off had a very clear kick in strategy, happy to wait for one of Campbell or Lloyd to take them every time except when Blakey took a quick one as the only man near it and a lot of space (was a quick empty 50 play by Giants). Midfield also basically had 1-2 of Heeney/Parker/Warner in at all times. Seemed those are the main 3 mids with Mills out and everyone else would basically fall out with him there. Already covered style above, weren't good, weren't terrible.

Only going to do players I think are relevant here as again it was hard to really tell what was happening for large parts...

Warner - Heavy midfield minutes and was one of the Swans' best for sure, love the way he attacks everything at pace. Mid only kills him but could have a big season if the role holds up, which it should, he's already better and has a ton more potential than Florent/Rowbottom.

McLean - I don't think he's relevant but seen a couple mention him so will include. Played forward as 2nd KPF rotating with McDonald off the bench I believe, didn't notice either ruck. Pretty even battle between the two.

Stephens - Wing role, think he started far wing but honestly looked like a little blurred red ant over there and might have been someone else. Did a couple of nice things, sweeping backwards mostly. A tick for a half, role was good.

Heeney - Pure midfield role and was really good, best couple of clearance players but the real standout was around the ground, reckon he'd have had 5 marks just working as a target for the defenders and other mids. Disposal wasn't great but not a concern of mine as it normally is very good. Big tick.

Papley - Not relevant himself but did a hamstring very early in the first, no idea severity but not a great sign, could open a fool's gold spot at the bottom of the bench if out for round 1 so be careful.

Kennedy - Looks set for a DPP change to defense, played HB the entire half from what I could tell and looked really decent. Could hurt Lloyd but more than likely will help him as Kennedy loves to hit short sideways passes and we all know Lloyd loves to be on the end of those. Will be an interesting role for him, not sure he has the pace for a lot of players but I guess he has size.

Campbell - Starting in defense, took a few kick-ins, was a general target in play. Not prolific enough to demand a spot at his price but he's such a quality ball user we will channel to him at least a bit. Looked really good.

Ladhams - Was solid, forward and 2nd ruck as expected. Remains only relevant if Hickey was injured and as he destroys Hickey as a pick.

Gulden - Really solid HF/Wing role for him, needs more pure mid to be fantasy relevant for mine but would think he pushes mid 80s this year.

Blakey - Defense as expected, big 1st quarter, much quieter in the 2nd. Looks good with the ball and did some good defensive things. He probably hurts Lloyd more than anyone as he is going to tuck and run at all times.

Parker - Pure mid, resting forward, pretty standard for him. Looks good.

McInerney - Wing role for him, was solid but not demanding selection. Worth an eye next week though as has some sloot traits that could lead to good scoring.

Hickey - Knee scare early but came back on and looked fine. Was actually really good.

P. McCartin - Was legitimately great. Would have had 5 intercept marks I reckon, although possible a couple were his brother as they look very similar when compressed into about 8 pixels each... Used it well and was just really comfortable. Great sign as we played a best 22 the first half and he was in it and stood out. Could be a very handy pick if he's there round one, young enough to be invested in by Sydney so should get a good chance at it.

Lloyd - Same old. Campbell and Kennedy I don't mind, they'll hit short targets and open angles for Lloyd, Blakey was there last year and doesn't help but isn't a high volume guy. The midfield being a bit subpar, especially if Mills is out for any kind of extended period, should lead to plenty of supply.

Giants - Were harder for the most part and looked really good in defense and for perhaps the first time ever they genuinely looked good moving out of defense and finding forward targets. Would have to think they were delighted by the half.

Hopper - I think it was him at the start but didn't see him after about midway through the first if it was, again it was a big pasty guy so could be Green also. Nothing of note.

Coniglio - Probably best on ground in the half I watched, pure midfield in Q1, 70/30 midfield forward in Q2 from what I could tell but was so good up forward it probably helped him. Looks in ripping nick and was just great to see. Absolute lock and anyone not starting him is just being silly for the sake of it. He might fail but on that form/role you just can't be taking him on as he's a legitimate premium chance. First 100% lock in my side assuming he makes it to round 1.

Whitfield - Basically think of what Lloyd's always done at Sydney and this was his role. HB absent an opponent and just skulking around, pushing up behind the pack for receives. Looked terrific and is the role he scored his absolute peak in. Big tick.

Ash - Strong wing and then inside mid role and did some nice things. I'm not brave enough but wouldn't knock anyone who was, he's a little sloot.

Ward - Big midfield role, I can't be certain but he basically appeared when I stopped seeing Hopper (maybe) so not sure how to read that. Didn't do much of note.

Angwin - I want to say he came on in the 2nd quarter but honestly the way the camera was positioned and the quality he might have been there earlier, I thought he was Bruhn at first before finally working out who he was and why Bruhn kept going to his left. Did a couple of nice things, they also had a strong team picked so at least in the mix for round one.

Preuss - Did not play in the first half unless I completely missed it.

Green - Nothing special, same old for him. There's a star but I'm not sure it's just there yet.

Cumming - Similar role to last year, may have been a bit more wing than last year but looked good.

Taranto - Strong midfield role in Q1, strong forward role in Q2, I believe 5/6 CBA were Q1. Was still playing a more high HF role than genuine FF role when forward and, like Coniglio, may have actually had more impact when forward. Still can't kick but between his own role and, perhaps more importantly, the performance of other forwards, he actually reduced a lot of my concerns on him. I still think disposal probably caps him at 105 no matter what but I'd been fairly down on him and I have to say he definitely put his name on my absurdly long list of options up forward. Big tick.

Haynes - Started down back, came off midway through the 2nd, didn't notice an injury but straight to the back of the bench and didn't see him again, I think it was just a minutes limit. Was solid but I don't think he's overly relevant.

Aleer - Think too many ahead of him, came on when Haynes went off, but he's going to be fun, leaps at EVERYTHING.

Kelly - Started wing, got a few midfield rotations. That 105-115 range type of role he's been stuck in the past couple of years. Was really solid though but think he's further from the 125+ role I'd need to pick him than he was last year.

Hogan - Probably the quietest of their forwards, that's a good sign.

De Boer - Was forward all game from what I could tell, not that you'd expect a tag in preseason.

Riccardi - The other guy that was best on ground, relentless leading and marking, genuinely Nick Riewoldt like workrate from him, doesn't have the wheels he had but was great to see up and back to provide the CHF target. That can be huge as allows Hogan to stay home and Greene/Taranto/Coniglio to roam instead of being full forwards. Great game and sign.

Flynn - #1 ruck and was serviceable. Definitely didn't do anything to slam the debate door shut but always a good place to be in the lead.

O'Halloran - Pretty strong wing role, didn't score much though.

Perryman - Backline also and looks to get ball when he can. I do worry that Perryman, Cumming and Whitfield might just undermine each other down back.

Can comment on others if wanted but these were the only guys I think were worth comment for fantasy purposes!
It was hard to watch, actually I only made it through half.
One to also keep an eye on is a Conor Stone, he was good and may get a run early especially with Greene out, he could hold a spot.
Preuss from what I’ve read elsewhere played very well second half and Briggs was knocked out I believe
