Flag defender to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks, other Dees pull up sore
Melbourne's backline takes a hit with with a number of players from its premiership team either injured or sore

MELBOURNE premiership defender Trent Rivers is racing the clock to be available for round one after the club revealed he suffered a knee injury during the practice match against North Melbourne last week at Casey Fields.

Rivers played the game out, but follow-up imaging showed he has a low-grade PCL strain that will sideline him for 3-4 weeks.

Melbourne's opening round against the Western Bulldogs is exactly three weeks after the injury occurred.

Rivers is one of a handful of Demons defenders carrying niggles, although the club says the rest are on the minor side.

Therabody AFL All-Australian full-back Steven May and veteran defender Michael Hibberd have "a little bit of tightness" – as described by the club's performance manager Selwyn Griffith – and will miss Thursday's AAMI Community Series match against Carlton.

But the club is adamant both will play in round one.

Christian Salem (knee) will also miss against the Blues but is expected to be fine for the season-opener. Salem had an incident at the end of the practice match where a North Melbourne player fell across his knee.

Harrison Petty is a little further away though following surgical intervention on a corked calf.

"He is progressing well and has integrated into running," Griffith said.

"He’ll look to return to performance in the next 3-4 weeks."

Richmond star Kane Lambert is staring down the barrel of an injury layoff that could last six months.

The Tigers are giving strong consideration to putting Lambert in for a significant hip operation that could wipe out his season.
The triple premiership winning midfielder has battled persistent soreness over the pre-season. Lambert missed the Tigers’ intra-club on February 19 and was forced to sit out the practice match against Geelong last Saturday.

But after multiple scans and little sign of improvement, Lambert will consult a surgeon next week to make the final call on whether he will go.

Any Melbourne watchers think Joel Smith is a chance? Always looked very capable to me but never quite made the step. Believe injuries have held him back?

He’s a chance and he’s a Goodwin favourite but I think it’s more likely we see Tomlinson cover Petty and Hunt cover Rivers. Both Petty and Rivers are expected to be back as early as round 2 anyway so if Smith were to play it is likely for just one week or two. Add in the likelihood that he is unlikely to score well as a key defender. Therefore the $177,200 price tag doesn’t really seem worth it to me.

If he does end up being proper dead I would love to see Sonsie given a crack at Lambo's usual role, but it will probably end up just being RCD or Ross that get the nod.

Sounds like an updated version of Dictator Dan. Absolutely no logic or science behind most of the lockdowns, testing and isolation rules that have been implemented. McGowan has kicked the can to the foreshore and now nowhere left to go...
McGowen is doing the right thing , WA is an isolated part of the world and he should be taking advantage of that .
If that means WA players are less exposed to the virus at the moment, they might have clumps of players missing later in the year.
WA players early in the season should be covid free though.

Thanks Ben. Having a look at his numbers is not exactly inspiring. I think I am subconsciously still trying to recoup payment from starting him in 2017, when he got 23 in a quarter and then went off injured. Perhaps it's time to let him go.
