Surely they wouldn’t have signed Dixon if Darling was ready round 2
Darling's status was unknown. He had cut off all communication with the club with most at the club believing he would not get the vaccine.

Dixon can add depth to our forward stocks with JK retiring this season, he is young and has shown plenty whilst training at the club.

He is also an option to pinch hit in the ruck, the club does not want to play Oscar Allen in that role at all, they want him to concentrate on his forward craft. So Dixon presents another option if Williams isn't performing.

This is just ridiculous… how many ankle injuries now?

Some talk the fitness staff at wce don’t believe in strapping ankles but not sure on the validity- in any case there has to be a proper review into this 😔
I played a couple seasons for Port Maggie’s juniors as a kid many many moons ago and there was an old trainer named Harro there. Harro was the dedicated ankle strapper and you had to see him before any training session or game or you weren’t allowed to run out. Old bugger ever went around and pulled socks down to check the lads who tried to sneak past him.

I’d be extremely surprised if there were AFL players out there not getting their ankles strapped religiously.

The literature on this is actually all over the shop.

Regarding the ankle it's shown to significantly reduce the likelihood of injury for athletes with history of previous ankle injuries but little to no effect for those without in most studies I've seen. So certainly makes sense if you've had ankle problems.

Regarding the knee it's been shown to significantly increase the stress on the ACL and MCL (most studies are on basketball but similar movements in AFL) whilst reducing the rotation on other parts of the knee. Basically the studies show that ankle taping is likely to increase the risk of certain knee injuries. This definitely makes sense when you consider that the ankle is a circuit breaker joint before the knee, if the ankle takes the force instead of transferring it then you're not likely to suffer a knee injury. Anecdotally I never had any kind of ankle injury but have done my ACL twice and both times I'd be shocked if I'd done the ACL if I'd done an ankle instead (both essentially non-contact injuries), did not have ankle tape for the second one fwiw.

Even the actual ankle stuff is all over the shop as far as effectiveness with a large portion of the studies concluding that it is possibly actually a placebo effect more than anything else.

I know I personally hated when teams required taped ankles, felt so restrictive and limiting as a player but that's probably largely because I wasn't used to it.

I’m certainly not up to date on strapping literature but my understanding, be it correct or not, is that strapping/bracing is most effective to prevent repeat injury.

Not many footy players that haven’t had a sprained ankle or two I’d imagine. I still strap my ankles at 35 even though I’ve never had a serious ankle injury, I have done my right ACL 3 times but I think that’s more to do with the fact I’m shaped like an upside down triangle and less to do with strapping habits.

Is Sinn/Stephens/Durdin on the bench over kill?
Not at all - bench cover this year is critical, need to spend more to have actual playing rookies for cash generation along with the likelihood of players missing games through injuries/covid so having adequate cover thus saving crucial trades will be very important.

Hear, hear.

Do not get caught up in trying to maximise the amount of “premiums” given the probability that one or several of these will not provide a good return on investment to start the season.

I can't help but wonder if one thing we are overlooking is that we have one uber premium available at a huge discount - Lachie Neale. Should we be taking advantage of this more (eg. consider him as a captain option) to fade others and absorb the premium price on rookies who look available this year?

Far from a strong endorsement for Sinn.
His comment on McEntee was backed up by someone else here who posted that Rockliff was sure McEntee would play rnd 1. Can't remember who it was.
Think Sinn is closer than Kelly/O’driscoll etc

We really have hardly any cheap rookie options especially down back

Does make for some interesting thinking though doesn't it.

You're spot on that the literature supports it (strongly) for people with prior injuries, there's little evidence on it preventing them without that though which is very interesting. I guess that raises the question of do you only tape if they have history or do you just tape always.

The ACL one is very interesting, probably something someone should do a study on

Kelly has to be close at this point with the sheer amount of guys that have gone down ahead of him but he's like a round 5 deadline guy that would have to change that equation and hasn't managed to string a few games together previously with his own injury issues.

Ultimately, it's a really weak group that hopefully throws some surprises up!
