Cats vs Lions
General - Solid game, was one of those weird games that was more structural and tactical than it was fierce for such a close game, more of the teams trying to stop the other team to generate mistakes for quick counters, made for an interesting watch if not a truly enjoyable one, one for the coaches rather than the fans to admire. Some pretty awful umpiring as well doesn't help.
Lions - Were a step off it all night to be honest, didn't really deserve to win but it's credit to them that they almost did, just didn't hold their defensive structures well enough and got cooked a few times by the umpires as well but ultimately they gave up 10 more shots at goal and were probably lucky that the Cats issue of I50 kicking for the night helped balance out their structures. Just struggled to generate a worthwhile loose defender which is normally what the Cats give up willingly so is definitely a concern.
Lyons - Another meh game for him, not getting the pure midfield role and as a low quality guy losing a fair chunk of quantity and being a lot less contested really saps his SC. Not worth considering until there is a role change or gets DPP for mine but will be a good price if he does.
Neale - Huge game from him, this is the kind of gutsy performance that takes you from being a 110-115 type to a 130+ type, hard tag, sore ankle and he just gutsed it out, got his hands dirty all night and was just a class above the other players. Was a bit lonely though for the Lions.
Rich - Really poor game, decent score. Just looks seriously unfit so far, no want to get the ball, no working to space, basically took about 12 kick-ins, followed up on a couple of them and otherwise it almost felt accidental for him to get the ball. Zorko is definitely hurting him and I think a large part of it is knowing that the defense is already shifted to cover for Zorko which makes Rich, the guy they'd normally be covering, a lot more hesitant to give any separation to his man and he's also getting a more dangerous forward as they play hide the cripple with Zorko. His go to move this year seems to be looking knackered with his hands on hips in a non-dangerous position.
Berry - Gutsy as hell effort, went off in the mid 30s with a bad looking shoulder, came back a few minutes later and gutsed out a 96 playing with one arm, as posted above, for a guy whose best attributes are tackling, contested ball and marking to not really be able to do any of them and still punch a score is huge. His one armed tackle on Duncan a real highlight. Was more of a "beat him at the stoppage" tag on Danger than anything else and he did it well, definitely was spreading better than Danger in general play. Shoulder is a major concern but really just needs two more decent scores now, it's abundantly clear he's a ticking time bomb but if he can punch out a couple of 80s the next couple of weeks he's basically plump and ready to be cashed in.
Clug - Struggling massively so far this year. Is being pushed out of any form of midfield rotation and just not getting enough ball outside to make up for it.
Zorko - Lock to get DEF but he's genuinely struggling, is undermining their defense with his inability to run or defend, they're basically covering for him at all times and it puts them a step off which is all it takes at that level, against a team like the Cats with creative and smart forwards they just expose that step of space all night. I assume it's one of those injuries where rest isn't going to do anything but I'd have though he's less damaging as a forward to the Lions and that he's creative enough there to do damage, really odd position to hide a guy who can't run. On the flipside, his kicking has been really solid and he looks 100% when kicking.
Cats - Strong win with a couple of good players out and some really nice home cooking from the umpires to get them home in a game they should have won comfortably. Their kicking I50 an issue for them but otherwise they were very good.
Blicavs - 2nd ruck role, borderline 1st ruck role, tonight and cashed in, he can score in that role and honestly I think they look way better with him in that role than Sava. He's better at literally everything except maybe jumping high than Sava, gives a hell of a lot more around the ground as well. One to watch as honestly, Sava just feels like a waste of a spot.
Hawkins - Must have given the umpires some really nice cakes because they took care of him tonight, unusually poor goal kicking from him or it could have been an enormous score. Such a good player.
Tuohy - Back to the backline and rebounding role with Stewart out, looked good.
Duncan - Another fadeout from him, floating defensively for a lot of cheap touches in the first half and then basically did nothing from then on. Have to question how fit he is given consistent fade outs, going to be a bargain soon but really have to question if he's actually worth buying right now.
Parfitt - Oddly his role seemed worse tonight with Selwood out, probably because they went MOC as a tagger instead, gutsed out a score in the end.
Cameron - Big start, then faded out for the most part. Still looks better when pushing up the ground to me.
MOC - Returned to tag, he actually did a good job but Lachie was class. Took away all the cheap touches around the ground but got beaten at stoppages.
Guthrie - His collapse has been just as unexpected and fast as his rise was, looks like the solidly unspectacular player from 2014-2019 all of a sudden again instead of the blazing premium of 2020-21. One of the weirder careers continues! Going to be dirt cheap but like Duncan, wonder if he's actually worth buying or if he's settled at this lower level.
Danger - Speaking of settling at a lower level, he was poor and very lucky not to be a lot worse as he must have had 4 lucky non-decisions go his way, was taking out legs all night and not getting obvious frees paid against him, was poor with ball as well. Hate to say it but he just feels like maybe he's done with being the elite player he used to be. Wasn't a hard tag by any means but he seems happy to just drift forward and do nothing for large parts of the game and his workrate at and away from the contest is maybe 50% of what it used to be.
Stengle - Really strong score from him, honestly felt like he did 2 things all night so to come out with a 70 is huge.
SDK - Massive Q4, was their best other than the umpiring in that quarter, couple of huge intercept plays and spoils that saw him score pretty much half his score. Felt like he was scored pretty harshly through the first three as well, just didn't seem to get the points for strong plays. Just continues to tick away, sadly with Stewart out this probably felt his best chance for a spike score but will keep holding and hope he grows in confidence a bit more and can punch out some more cash generation on a good score or two. Looks a solid cow still.
