Swans vs North
General - Watched a bit of footy since this one so not as specific probably as normal... interesting game this one, Sydney were very ordinary in their intensity for a second week in a row, North on the opposite side really responded to their woeful performance last week and brought the heat. Ultimately Sydney's structures held up just enough and a superior fitness base allowed them to limp home.
Sydney - One of those tough games to judge, this was always a danger game against a side embarrassed last week that needed to respond for a side that played themselves well and truly out of form last week and was just scrapping for something. Will be happy that for the most part the defense held up but the midfield was again lacklustre and the pressure level was not good enough. Got the win at the end of the day though and move on.
Heeney - Tale of two halves here, was very ordinary in the first half, was very good in the second. Role was all over the shop but did his best work from HF, it seemed like Stephenson was tagging him in the first half to me, seemed to basically go with him to most places and did a good job, released though in second half and Heeney went to work, had a big Q4 including a sealer that seemed to score very well despite not really being important or relevant. Just looks great this year though. Those who started him are singing right now.
McInerney - Another who was pretty ordinary through 2.5 quarters and then dominated, was the best player on the field in Q4, genuinely brought his own pill and used it well. Would love this type of game to be closer to his standard moving forward, the talent is there.
Mills - The only Swan who really played a good four quarter effort, wasn't great by his standards but was really good. Bit of an ankle (probably achilles) issue in Q3 iirc which is obviously a concern with him. Hopefully rounding into some fitness and form though.
Florent - Was much better today, will say it every time he plays well until he does it but this needs to be the standard not the exception.
Campbell - Was brilliant today, intercepted and looked confident in the role for one of the few times. One of those players who doesn't know how good he is and just scratching the surface. Bad for Stephens as he's probably one of about 3 spots I think is genuinely available and this kind of outing slams that shut for a couple.
Lloyd - At this point are there any players who aren't upgrade targets in the next month? Scrappy game from him, from what I could tell Turner was putting work into him and it worked, Campbell stepped up and took the job on which was nice but Lloyd well held and had his disposal impacted and that definitely hurts, as much as I hound him for cheap touches, he does also take on the important 20m inside kicks more than anyone else that can open things up.
Rowbottom - I have no idea what game CD were watching that he had a positive ratio, looking at the stats I'm even more baffled. Thought he was poor again to be honest with a couple of truly dreadful disposals included.
Gulden - Got stuck a lot deeper this week and hurt his scoring, didn't help the team was so bad in general.
Ladhams - Hickey might just be our most important player and if he's going to play to this level, that only gets more pressing. He was really poor. I actually think he's a good player but this outing was pretty good confirmation why we're playing the likes of Reid, McLean and Amartey as our 2nd rucks over him...
Blakey - Fought through to put up a better score than it looked like for most of the game. Made a few key mistakes but can't fault the desire to take the game on and we need more of it.
Ronke - Came on midway through the 3rd and genuinely changed the game, if it wasn't Buddy that was subbed I'd be very suss about the whole thing (I still am) but this was the best game he's played (yes, including the 7 goal game), just never seen him play so well.
Kennedy - Similar to my Ward comment above sadly, he's just struggling to find a position where he's a positive outside the midfield and he's been passed on in that area. Honestly after the way Horse did ROK dirty and cost him his 300 games I hope that he doesn't do Kennedy like that but I'm not sure he's best 22 anymore and I would understand if he did, like I did then
Parker - Copping the "Bevo on Dunkley" treatment right now of playing out of position more often than in it, just need to see him in the ruck at this point. One of those hard ones, no matter how cheap he gets, you can't buy him on current role, even if he gets DPP he'd be a hard sell right now because he's barely playing midfield, I don't know if he's injured or a victim of the great round one game but right now he's lost, this might be the worst 3 week stretch of his career. He's a champ so you'd think he bounces back but he needs a chance. This isn't Kennedy, he's still our best inside midfielder and while I'm the first to champion more Heeney and Mills, there's nothing to explain Florent or Rowbottom over him outside Horse always has his favourites and those two obviously are at the top of the list.
P. McCartin - Solid again, just well positioned and takes the chances. Feel like there is a 90 game in him real soon. Head knock was a scary one but was a very good approach at the ball and can't fault it, just happens in footy, was great to see he was cleared and came back on, hopefully there's no delayed concussion issues or anything given his history and just an over-abundance of caution from the docs to even test him! Been one of the great stories of the season.
North - Gallant in defeat, probably a term their fans hate at this point but they outworked Sydney, were far harder at the man and the ball and with just a bit more class and fitness could have won this game very easily. Heck they almost won it without those two things! Interesting to see so many position changes as well.
Simpkin - Worked his butt off to put together a strong game. Wouldn't shock me if he keeps building from this game and has a very strong season from here. Rate him.
McDonald - Pushed to a wing today, perhaps just to screw those who brought him in early expecting a position change, played well and was important. Lot of clangers though and that's an issue. Still it's probably a cleaner role.
Hall - Not a great game but registered a decent score anyway, perhaps the best takeaway of this game was the positional changes, both Ziebell and McDonald out of his way paves a path for some monster scores in the very near future, imo. Uncharacteristically high amount of clangers held him back a bit.
JHF - Shame he went home at 3QT as he was enormous in the first 3. Last 2.5 weeks have probably cooked his chances of getting DPP but I guess you cop that for the massive increase in scoring capacity. He was fantastic, just so much time with the ball and such a powerful kick. He's basically what Ziebell should have been.
Ziebell - Played full forward this week, kicked 5 so you imagine it sticks. Didn't do much else and think he's wasted in that role and provides more if he can get more touches but it worked today.
Goldy - The great man is trying to kill the Xerri dream. Was just so dominant in the ruck, I guess we already knew he was the better player but he kind of just gave the big middle finger to anyone doubting it.
LDU - It's funny, he still always looks so surprised when people tackle him, he's a good one though and finally seems to be building a base to run games out a bit. That said, needed to do more late.
Xerri - Stinker for him, wasn't even that bad but mucked up a couple of key chances late in the game and just struggled to impact at ground level this week. Still dominated Ladhams as well though, have to assume a lot of sharking happened to his hitouts. Also low TOG as was off for an inordinate amount of time in the 3rd.
Perez - Started well, faded hard. Wonder if they persist with McDonald wing and Ziebell forward to give him chances. Worth watching as will be game 3 in a couple of weeks, just about perfect timing for a downgrade and he's a serious talent who just needs his knees to hold together!
