What's the word on Begg?
Would you think about taking him over Strnadica on exposed form at all?
Not without a second sighting, I was pretty happy with his performance first up though which was a big surprise for even the most die-hard Collingwood fan I reckon ...
... just not as a ruckman.
He got totally smashed in the ruck contests and even though Witts is an imposing opponent Begg looks like he is just too short and small in frame to compete well against any AFL-standard ruckman right now. There was one ruck contest in particular where he tried to beat Witts by out-jumping him and it almost looked like it might have worked right up to the point where they came into contact and he bounced off Witts like a rubber ball (and the sheer difference in size, not just height but size, became glaringly apparent).
Having said that was *excellent* at ground level - two or three times he actually sharked a Witts tap *after* losing the ruck contest.
Before you ask, no he didn't just avoid the tap altogether like you see sometimes with an overmatched ruckman, rather he contested (and lost) the tap and then reacted quickly enough at ground level to actually shark the tap and get the clearance before anyone else could get their hands on the ball.
I'm not sure what he will end up becoming but there was a lot to like in how he performed today.
For SC he is basically not going to get many cheap points for his ruckwork so it'll be hard to see how he'll score consistently enough to be a cash cow, but I'll still keep an eye on him next round for sure just to see if there are any positive signs in his actual ruck work versus some tough competition in Nank and Soldo.
