Sam Flanders (FWD)
  • First round draft pick (#11, 2019)
  • 3 yrs @ 342k ave + RFA rights
  • Kicked 2 goals on AFL return last round
  • Draft descriptions below - possible long term FWD playing mid time?
  • VFL averages: 27 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles

Rookie Me
A PLAYER with plenty of upside and some readymade attributes is Sam Flanders, a Gippsland Power talent who can fulfil the role as a dangerous forward or a damaging inside midfielder.

In his bottom-age year, Flanders spent the majority of his time as a goalkicking forward, booting 19.19 from 12 games, before moving into a midfield role this year, but resting forward in bursts, booting 13.5 from the same amount of games. His attributes lend themselves to moving into this role at AFL level, with the potential top 10 pick able to explode out of a stoppage, give off a clean handball, or get forward and beat his opponent one-on-one in the air or at ground level.

He showed during the finals series - most notably against Oakleigh Chargers in the qualifying final - that he is capable to winning the game off his own boot, slamming home four goals in a quarter to help his side to the lead at the main break, but it also showed an area of improvement - his four-quarter consistency which does come in and out of games with him being dominant at his best, and ineffectual during quiet periods.

Overall, Flanders is a player with serious X-factor and strength that he applies both inside and up forward.

Knightmare, BigFooty

4. Sam Flanders

Best position: General forward/inside midfield

Height, weight: 182cm, 81kg

Recruited from: Gippsland Power

Projected draft range: 5-10

Plays like: Robbie Gray

October Ranking: 4

Rationale: One of the draft's most damaging forward of centre and shows continued improvement as a ball-winning midfielder. His finals performance against Oakleigh -- where he outplayed projected top-two choices Rowell and Anderson -- reminded recruiters that despite playing mostly midfield this year, forward of centre, only Anderson at his best is comparable.

Strengths: Scoreboard impact, threat one-out in the goal square, overhead marking, one-on-one marking, aerial marking, leadup marking, keeps his feet, low centre of gravity, reading of the drop of the ball, crumbing, contested ball winning, loose ball winner, first possession winner at stoppages, quick and clean hands in close, aggressive tackler, strength through the hips to stand up through tackles, explosive acceleration, agility, vertical leap, takes on the game, hurt-factor by foot, finishing around goal, vision, leadership and voice out on the field

Weaknesses: Effective but not as influential through the midfield as he can be up forward, consistency, with body very physically advanced ceiling may be lower than some other top end prospects, sometimes rushes kicks without assessing best options

Oleg Markov (DEF)
  • 3 yrs @ 322k
  • Averaged 82 in 2021 (injury-adjusted), ie D5 level, after moving to the Suns
  • Potential beneficiary of recent LTIs to Lachie Weller (ACL, up to 12 months) and Will Powell
  • Value DEF option, with cheap salary secured for 3 years

Jonathon Ceglar (RUC)
  • Averaged 90 in 2021, including 100 post-bye
  • Possible ruck cover for a contending team
  • Returning from injury, listed as a test for this week
  • Final months of his UL contract, so available for very modest value (with salary paid)

Gryan Miers (FWD)

  • AFL 22 Under 22 side, 2020
  • Played every game in 2019 and 2020, lifting average from 67 to 72
  • Current average of 54 reflects low TOG score (5) and uncharacteristically wayward kicking (4 goals, 6 behinds this season vs 59 goals, 32 behinds previously)
  • Posted scores of 90 and 106 this season
  • Distinctive haircut
  • Led TAC league goalkicking in 2017 (50 goals), while playing midfield for Vic Country at U18 Champs
  • RFA rights provide potential for a long term contract based off a depressed 2022 average. [No room at The Darkness at this stage!]
  • Alternately, could provide affordable finals cover for a contending coach
  • Final months of his UL contract, so available for very modest value (with salary paid)

Tom Papley (FWD)

  • 25yo elite small forward in an improving Swans side
  • All Australian 2021
  • 22 Under 22 team 2017
  • 2x Swans leading goalkicker
  • Papley’s grandfathers both played for South Melbourne, and in fact were teammates from 1964-66. Long-term father-son play?
  • Played every game 2019-21
  • 3 years of c. 80 scoring (F4 level)
  • Now getting more centre bounce attendances (23% year to date - vs Heeney 18%), scored 2 tons in last 6 games
  • 3 yrs @ 431k
  • Available for trade due to surprising FWD depth at The Darkness following the 2022 draft and auction (McKay, Bolton, Moore, Newcombe, Rioli and Chol all added)
  • Papley is a niggly player who frustrates opponents with his skills and celebrations - maybe it’s best just to own him yourself?

Markov led the Suns for kick-ins, playing on from all 8 (good man!).

Papley had season-high CBAs (11, or 55%).

Pendles maintained elevated CBAs (81%), as he has since R10, but posted comfortably his highest score over that period, having had a week off over the bye.

Morning all,

YRA has got some great young talent in the door over the past few days - we look forward to Macrae and Koschitzke donning the YRA colours. To go with these we have seen a pick in each of the first three rounds of this years draft land with the club.

We say goodbye to a few long time servants of the club:
Cam Guthrie - a workhorse who we have underpaid for max output, thank you.
Travis Boak - one of the more underrated midfielders of the league.

Then two who rarely get on the park.
Hurn - little inconsistent, but we do thank you for those huge scores from time to time.
Preuss - Can't even make the 22, good riddance.

Suspect that is out work done for the period, however Fyfe and Crouch still wanting to play finals.

Any last minute interest in Gryan Miers for his RFA rights?

I likely don’t have room to take him on, but he could be a cheap forward long term.

Something nominal, perhaps involving a future pick, would get it done.

The Giants are still in the market for a premium level MID whose contract is ending, or nearly ending.

Our 2024 2nd Round Selection is on the table for the right deal.

Worth flagging that The Darkness has a range of 2+ year players that are also tradeable before tonight’s deadline.

Given the strong pricing paid on some 1 year players, you may find that you get 2023+ included for little or no added cost.

Daniel Rioli (2 years @ 340k, premium forward, DPP in career best form) was traded for less than an R2, due to deal structure suiting both coaches.

Flanders had 46 touches in the Suns’ VFL semi final win yesterday …

… after 37 touches, 10 marks and 6 tackles last week.

Could he be another Will Brodie?

“Sam Flanders was instrumental as Gold Coast escaped with a 12-point semi-final victory over Sydney.

The Swans had their chances in the last quarter but inaccuracy cost them in the end, finishing the game with a disappointing 3.6 final term.

Flanders, who was pick No.11 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, had the ball on a string collecting a phenomenal 46 disposals, 10 clearances and seven marks in an impressive display for the winners.”

Good write-up on “Mr Clean” from the Herald-Sun below.

Has been on The Darkness’ LTI list on 2022, but is now fit and firing.

Built nicely in his VFL return from injury, with 19, 24, 27, 23, 24 and then 34 touches.

Locked in on a cheap salary of 385k for a further 4 years, for interested coaches.

FINALS BOLTER
Toby McLean (Western Bulldogs). Estimated price: $199,000 FWD/MID

Did we just see the bargain of 2023? McLean had dropped totally off the radar after suffering two ACL injuries in as many years, restricting him to three games in 2021 and none this year until he was recalled to the Dogs’ line-up for their elimination final.

He quickly reminded us why he has been a successful KFC SuperCoach pick in the past, racking up nine touches in the first quarter on the way to 21 for the game – plus nine tackles – and 100 KFC SuperCoach points.

Back in 2018 McLean was one of the best starting picks of the season, averging 111 over the first 10 rounds (and finishing with a 95 average). That’s a long time ago and the Dogs’ midfield is set for a post-season shake-up, but at a rookie price the 26-year-old will be getting a lot more attention from fantasy coaches this summer.

Flanders leads all comers again today, with 42 touches:

27 kicks
15 handballs
9 marks
7 tackles

166 Dream Team / AFL Fantasy points

Victorian teams, mmm.

So we can rule out:
YRA - Yorkshire
Dagobah Immortals - Celestial
Arcadia Timelords - Celestial
Creme De La Creme - Switzerland
Roppongian Rangers - Japan
Neptune Knights - Atlantis
Jabukanji Stingers - Queensland

That leaves us with:
Goodie's Giants FC - South East Melbourne
The Darkness - In the shadows (but where?)
Jordan's Jets FC - Unspecified location, much like the Thunderbirds

Could he be headed to the reigning premiers?

Much like Geelong, they seem to have a different salary cap................and an eye for talent. ;)
