The way Sydney play also changed last season, it was more a fast paced get the ball up the ground quickly type of game via run and carry more than a controlled type of slower game where Lloyd was looked for and used as the main conduit out of their backline.

Nah, probably underpriced with increased midfield minutes to come. Just under $600k.

Here is where I am at heading into Christmas, will assess in the new year :-



Very much Guns & Rookies - just the one mid pricer currently in Hopper.

Backline has risk attached running 3 rookies on the field but the reports on Goater sound very promising at this stage, Ginbey is very powerfully built & seriously impressing all at WCE - kid is very driven & mature for his age, huge work ethic. Chesser would of played round 1 last year if not for injury, expect him to play on a wing this year. Young at D2 has real risk but I love his upside & the way he finished last year. Freo have a nice draw early on which further adds to his appeal.

Loaded up in the mids, all durable - I think Bont might benefit more than Macrae with Dunkley gone, bit worried how Bevo uses Macrae these days. Bont played with niggles for much of last year so feel he is underpriced & we know his style of play is loved by the SC scoring system.

Grundy offers great value, obviously preseason games & reports will tell us more about how him & Gawn will operate. Grundy averaged 130 in 2018 & 2019, 120 in 2020 & 115 in 2021 until he had his season ruined by injury last year. Marshall with no Ryder appeals, only issue is with no King, will he have to play fwd more???

Think Dunkley, Rozee & Taranto are the best fwd premium options. Guys like Fyfe & Thomas offer great value but Fyfe's durability record is a huge concern & just not sure on Thomas. After injury last year he really seemed to struggle, have to wait & see if Clarko can get him back on track.

From the training reports, it looks like Comben will partner Larkey as North's 2 key fwd targets/ van Rooyen I am big on as mentioned earlier.

Like this team, only thing i'm wary about for next season is the over-reliance on rookies who could be sub candidates and also produce low on field scores.

I've picked my side where I have 10 keepers with a few underpriced mid pricers like Salem/Hopper but more importantly the top priced rookies that are more likely to play round 1. Mitchell averaged 96 from a tick over 50 % CBA in a poor team last season. Pies recruited him for a reason, to help with clearances. What I read into that is Mitchell CBA will be up around 80% in a better team which means you'd think he'll make up to the 15-20 points to get back to 115+ based on increase CBA by 30%. I put him in my side today as my 5th keeper mid with hope he's my 8th mid keeper at seasons end.

Every year 123k priced rookies pop up out of so I wouldn’t worry.
Last year no one would have had Jack Hayes and Nic Martin on their radar at this time of the year, both 102k and both tonned up in round 1. Now I’m not saying that will happen again but the rookies always pop up. It’s about having flexibility in your team structure to get the right rookies in.

DEF Lots of big prices in defence, so im going with value and upgrade later. Risky move but i do not want to sweet every week wiating for rookies to be named. Yeo, McGrath and Salem pre season watch.

MID Line is settled, will be some talk about titch and how he fits in to the PIES system, but expect him to push 110+ M8 . Parish on watch for M4. The DONS have alot of options through Midfield so Steel gets the Nod.

RK English, histoy says he will miss a few games but you need to start him. Looks as if he has added a more muscle to his frame and hoping this gets him to 20 games for the year. Grundy working with Melobounre midfield and a tick over 500K ...yes please, expect he does most of the tap work with gawn playing foward. What odds would you get for Gawn winning the Coleman Medal?

FWD Cameron for cover. Yeap im going Fyfe, will miss games but at this price i just have to start him. Thomas will rebound out of defence and see alot of the sherrin and finally a decent coach to guide him. I expect Allen to get a cameo as Nic Nat relief.

Hawks and Roos games will be a close watch during preseason. Could be some hidden value with new roles for the 2023 season.

I have the same concerns. He couldn't keep up with the Hawks new game style last season.

I guess it is how you want to look at the numbers of each player. You are correct in that Butters has played one more game than Dunkley. But you could say that Dunkley's missed games were only caused by two injuries while Butters missed games to three knee injuries, an ankle and a suspension. Five tons is good but then in 2021 he went eight games without a ton. You need to go back six years for that in Dunkley land. I do agree if he stays fit he has lots of upside. Unsure about him currently. At the moment I consider him to be a leading contender for the Isaac Heeney Frustrated Coach Award. This award goes to the player who when you don't have him pulls out a string of 120 plus scores but as soon as you rearrange the deck chairs to bring him in, he rewards you with sub standard 70's and enigmatic 80's. Warning- this award has also been associated with heavy drinking and occasional bouts of despair.
