I reckon the defenders line looks really interesting this season. I count 15 players at a minimum who can contend for a top six spot ranging from the price point of Daicos up to Sinclair.

It would be a brave move but at this point I’m tempted to save a bit of cash to begin with on this line by fading the 600k+ guys to start with.

Yeo and Bowes both look very good value too for what they’re capable of at their best.

Definitely feeling the same, I feel pretty good about Dawson, Stewart and Sicily to be top 6 guys but I'll probably only start 1 or 2 if the rookies allow it.

Not that I dislike the options, I just see very little safe value.

Thoughts on nick haynes?
Washed for mine. Has lost 3 or 4 steps, all confidence and is just a shadow of what he once was. Only year he was relevant was the shortened games, albeit he actually played well that year also and probably deserved the score.

Clipped 100 twice in 17 games last year, you can drop that to 85 and it doesn't change either.

I guess he's worth watching but I've got extremely low expectations on him.

Geez, just had a look through my defenders last year.
Had Zorko, he got injured. Traded in Stewart, who got suspended that week for 4. So traded him to Hall, who got injured that week. Traded Hall to Whtifield, who got injured that week. 😄😄
Ouch, I guess that's a perfect example steering clear of the injury prone guys (Stewart was just bad luck) Risk is lower I spose if you start them because of the 1 trade cost of getting them out of your side, notwithstanding the loss of pts if they're injured early. As opposed to bringing them in and then back out again. The lack of funds can also lead to getting 'discounted' players too.

This is why i'm set on Dawson at D1 I think, plays every game and can be moved up the ground if being tagged in the backline and still produce decent scores.

Haha yep. The year before I ignored Hall all year because he was injury prone.

From Freo BF board - 2 track watchers at their match sim yesterday :

- Young taking the kick outs and his general play in transition.

- Young was so good I thought. They are definitely looking for him all over the ground so Fantasy players can take that for what it’s worth and add in the fact that he took the bulk of the kickouts today. Ryan and Chappy each had a go too, but even with the Ryan one I think the plan was to have Ryan kick it out to Clark, get it back then handball to Young who’d positioned himself on the 50/boundary intersection or close by.

Very interesting that Young was taking most of the kickouts with Ryan playing in the same team as him.... along with them looking for him all over the ground. Getting hard to resist him especially if this continues in the preseason games.

Looks clearly the best line for cash gen, hard to see how Coffield,Goater,McKenna,Ginbey and Wilmot arent pretty secure cash cows as strong bodies with defined roles in their sides as long as they are fit.

Couple others should play Round 1 aswell.

Leaning towards one of Sicily and Stewart with Yeo and then just going Bowes,Coffield,Goater,McKenna,Ginbey and Wilmot myself.

Spend the cash in the midfield and forward line where rookie stocks look very average.

Yeah, I'm looking very similar, expect to be very light down back.

Biggest question is probably whether I go hunting for value on a Daicos/Young type pick over the more secure picks. Stewart's perfect bye definitely a factor for me (also probably best case for "value" of the super premiums).

I'd much rather be paying top dollar for the mids than other positions this year so I'd actually be super happy if there's not many good rookies there.

Do have to be careful with overloading mids though as can have major consequences on rookie downgrade targets as there are just more options there generally.

I actually think my lean is to pass on Stewart, bye is handy but with only 2 of the first 10 at GMHBA and a draw that is pretty tough I'm backing him to drop in price and be a good upgrade target.

Good chance you still have him for those byes and get him at 550K with them being later in the year now.

Do Goater and Ginbey have well defined roles? We've seen one game from the former now with a new coach and haven't seen the latter at all. Are both McKenna and Wilmot in their best 22? How do they structure up their backline with those two plus also Rich and Coleman? Is Coffield fit and guaranteed in their best 22?

Nothing is certain 40 days out from a season but right now my thinking in regards to defence cash generation is very positive.

Brisbane still played Ah Chee or Prior all year would have thought McKenna is a better player than both and gives them some genuine speed either out of the back half or on a wing.

Wilmot already had a spot and was impressive all finals so should hold.

Coffield is still a question mark as picked up a pretty serious hamstring injury before Christmas and is building up on a limited program, hard to see how hes not best 22 if fit though and is on track for pre season games.

Ginbey I think is one of the more certain Round 1 starters we have, strong body and has the ability to play back and mid, will be massive for the Eagles future.

Remains to be seen how Clarko sets up but its hard to see how Goater isnt in his side, again another guy that can play more than one position and is ready for senior footy.

On Ginbey, in all the match sims so far he has swapped with Yeo in playing mid & half back. Looks like they want one of them in the middle at all times as they are similar in style :- big bodied/ strong tackling/ physical/ good defensively.

Ginbey and McKenna the most likely out of that lot. Bench spots for each.

I'm yet to be convinced Wilmot will get a gig in their Rd 1 team.

Interesting looking back at 2022 and the starting price for the top 5 defenders

Sinclair - $469k (33rd highest price)
Sicily - $448K (46th highest price)
Stewart - $585K (2nd highest price)
Docherty - $553K (10th highest price)
Dawson $550K (5th highest price)

Finding the first 2 early in the season to allow cash on premium mids/fwds will go a long way to a good start of the season. I started none of these guys last year and pretty sure I ended up with just Sicily late in the season and traded Doch in final round of the year.

There's value somewhere in Daicos, Young, Redman, Yeo and no doubt others - just a matter of finding the right ones.

Think the requirement for the value pick is higher than its ever been, Redman and Young could work but you'd have to be pretty confident they can hit at least 100 to pick them.

My preference right now is to look more towards Yeo and Bowes for the value as what you need from them is far less to work.
