And what happens if Gawn, Bont, Macrae, Mills, Grundy etc. all get M/F status? I certainly wouldn't want to be stuck with a Rozee & Cogs weighing down 2 spots in my forward line...
But by your rationale you need 6 free slots just in case a bunch of ruckmen and midfielders get forward status.

I guess the only solution is to fade Dunkley and field a 6 rookie forward line.

I suppose I just feel more confident that the Stewart/Dawson/Sicily types will be top 6 on their line, so I am comfortable locking in premiums in that position

In comparison, the forward line feels like a complete lottery depending on who gets DPP.
Will the top 6 forward standard be a 95+ average or a 110+ average? Either is possible realistically.

Just sideways trade Rozee or Taranto to one of them if it becomes a situation that theres too many of them that we need, think that scenario is quite unlikely though, theres also inevitably going to be injuries that will open up forward spots throughout the season.

Play the game with what we know, not out of fear of things that might not even happen, can always adjust on the fly with 36 trades including 5 boosts, DPP additions only become relevant if the guys gained it and is actually scoring well in the role, neither of those things are gauranteed so isn't worth worrying about in the pre season.

Agreed. Planning for MPP is fraught with danger. All it takes is an injury or a team structure change up and you're stuck with them in a position you may not want. Work with the facts and have plans in place for if and when those players get DPP.

Conversely, what if none of them get M/F status?

Gawn looks the best bet out of those/Grundy if it is a 50/50 split (although Gawn mentioned he expects he will be 70%fwd/30%ruck) possibly.

No Dunkley anymore so hard to see Bont playing as much fwd. Macrae I hardly doubt will play enough fwd to qualify (although who knows with crazy Bevo ) Mills is an interesting one, really gets thrown around a lot - I suspect he will be put behind the ball as a loose defender when not in midfield in the season proper, think Horse was just experimenting on the weekend. Trac possibly, every chance he will be on the borderline of qualifying for fwd/mid status.

$65k ITB. Think after this weekend I will find a way to move Ziebell up to Coniglio. My levers being Laird or Oliver to one of the $600k mids, Bowes down to a Coffield/rookie, Callaghan to a McLean/rookie and/or Darcy to Preuss (if Preuss rucks solo this weekend and is named solo round 1 I may go there).

Macrae was playing a little bit in their backline during their intraclub, mostly proper midfield role.

I've gone Ziebell because I still get teary-eyed thinking about him in the 2021 season. I'm not going anywhere near Fyfe, and JHF is the only other option for me in that price range. I'd like to see more of him before booting Ziebell out.

Lol @ Feerits comment by the way. You got a good laugh out of me before your comment got removed!
I saw that too...."May God have mercy on your soul" LOL

You could be right - there is every chance none of those guys do get M/F DPP. I guess my main point is to just be open to the possibility that they do.

I see everyone talking about this Coniglio, Rozee & Taranto combination like they are part of this guaranteed top 6 "set and forget" forward setup, when the reality is none of them were good enough to crack the top 6 on average in last year's forward group. Bont (116), Dunkley (108), Libba (105), English (105), Parker (104) & Brodie (102) all averaged more, with only English having less total points too.

Is leaving 2 forward spots free for this year's Bont, Libba & Parker DPP additions enough? Who knows, but personally I probably prefer to start the year with a bit more flexibility in my forward setup.

Plenty of changes since my V1 posting a few weeks back.
Obviously the pre-season round this week will potentially influence some of the 50-50 calls that are part of the game when picking our initial squads. A few bench sposts are still rubbery - again waiting on this weekend & of course the R1 teams.

I've left a bit in the kitty as I expect to be trading hard in rounds 3-4-5 - would be nice not to, but inevitably things will look different with real scores and price movements to be considered.
DEFS - I'm obviously very light here compared to other lines. Hoping for good cash-gen from this set-up as its likely I'll be down on points compared to most other teams.
MIDS - I'm happy with this line. I'm even hoping for a bit of upside scoring from the 500-600K players and am running with (hopefully) a set of cheaper, rookie types who can all score well.
RUCKS - Fairly standard options. I had English in V1, but have drifted away. He has had those niggles and has a fairly tough run of early match-ups - now an upgrade watch/target.
FWDS - Have flipped this line around the most as there seem to be plenty of good options. Fyfe has been in and out but is there for now - seems such a good price for such a great player - would kick myself all season if I faded him & he plays well. Waiting to see how Cunnington shapes up this weekend.
Not sure why this sides copping so much critiscm. With 36 trades there's plenty of scope to take risks. Even if you only have 9 keepers that's still enough trades to get to a full premium side. Once this round of preseason matches is over I'm sure we'll find out that many of the rookies we were relying on are either: duds, have terrible JS, or are vest candidates, then we'll all be scrambling to get them off field. Whereas you're already set up for this scenario, so it will be much easier to downgrade to any must have rookies that show up.

My only comment is that your C/VC options look a little weak. I'd recommend trying to upgrade one of your top 5 mids to the likes of Laird/Oliver/Neale/Miller. But if you're confident that 2 of Bont/Petracca/Cripps can match those guys then go for it.

Interesting McAndrew pick in the fwd line. I know you said rookies a bit of a guess but is that just a quick cash grab or a bit of that plus playing into a future ruck strategy? You have the online ESava account already as F6 so why not McAndrew as R3?
Atm the idea is just that McAndrew might play early as the ruck or 2nd ruck and I'm not impressed by other cheap fwd rookie options. I'd still rather have a loop at R3 from the start of the year than someone like Comben or Chandler at F8 who I think have really poor scoring potential by putting McAndrew at R3.

Thanks @randomcliche - really appreciate you taking the time to analyse my team.
You'll have seen that I'm a confirmed mid-pricer.
I always pick my team with an eye for value rather than anything else... keepers, structure etc.
The only real concession is that I do pick 3-4 captain options (Bont, Petracca, Cripps this year) largely on the basis that there is value conferred there by way of the double points..
I just wish I had some decent past results to validate my thinking.

But last years winner does help to back up my approach.
If you go back to posts in early Feb in the Midfield Discussion thread - posts 209 to 254, you'll see some chat based on the work of @Beg2Differ who tracked the starting team and trades of Raymagoos - see this link
https://supercoachscores.com/thread...eam-post-230-onwards.4408/page-12#post-904583

They actually picked about 10 in that price range you doubted.. this is a breakdown

So It can be done - and again drawing on that analysis & discussion - you dont have to nail it.
Raymagoos made quite a lot of early corrections.
Thanks again & good luck

Thanks for such a considered response given I called your team a steamy pile! It's very generous. You are not talking to a GNR die hard here, but someone who loves a value selection.

Your comments are certainly food for thought, and the trade boosts do change things up since I ran my SCS MPM league a few years back. I will say that league was a rounding steaming pile with perhaps a couple of reasonable teams but by-and-large a selection of active SCS members who made way too many failed picks (I'm not saying bad picks) and their teams genuinely suffered. I think this influenced my team selections to now be really, really hard on midpricers and they have to earn their spot in my team. Has this changed with 6 extra trades? IDK.

I don't particularly rate the Fyfe, Hayes, Jackson, Cunnington, Lycett picks (last two being perhaps the better of the bunch) these types do give you the chance to jag a keeper but they also can clog up your side, as you'd know.

As for a comparison, I think you've even gone more MPM than last year's winner. I count 10 expected keepers in his R1 team (Excl Hewett, Witts, Cogs, Brodie), I count 8 in yours. We're going into a season where I don't think we can expect as many cheap keepers, will potentially have more season ending LTIs post byes and we've only got one more trade to do it with for one extra round.

I think the threshold for success is increasing with higher average scores year-to-year (perhaps more trade influencing this, but I also feel the defenders and mids are scoring more, with the rucks declining (only 2 of them though) this makes me want to be able to achieve a full ultra premo team, no femos (fake premiums).

Do you have a sheet that just says this player is priced to avg X and I think can score Y and sorted Y-X and insert team after you've selected your captains?

Welcome your thoughts on why you've gone even further than last years winning MPM team, how you plan to beat me (team attached)! It's an 11 premo team, not particularly GNR or MPM but a blend imo.

They might not have cracked the top 6 last season but circumstances have changed for each one since then and they all present value (of varying degrees) now.

Jai Culley @ 3% ownership. Shuey struggling with injury. Sheed old as. Yeo fit (for now). Tim Kelly plays 18 games a season. This bloke tackles like Sam Berry & I'm hoping he profiles the same going from Year 1 to Year 2. He's fit as (played all 8 periods of the praccy match) and I'm hoping he locks himself in as a staple in the WCE centre square this season. I can't find a player around his price that I think will score more than him with the role they have (Bowes, Fyfe). Fingers crossed for an 80 average until he's upgraded. Also on him for Rising Star @ $51s.

Cunners @ 9% ownership. Name me a Top 2 midfielder for their team who can go around 100 priced at 420k. Hopper might be one. Sam Berry? Another? Now name one who's a forward. If Taranto, who maxxes out at 90ppg, is fait accompi to be a Top 6 forward then surely Cunners comes into consideration too at 100k cheaper than Taranto. I think LDU gets the focus of opposition mid coolers as Simpkin is a butcher ball in hand. This bloke will still shoulder his fair share of mid time as he isn't really a Dustyesque forward.

If Cunnington goes at around 100 he's definitely a keeper. If Culley can punch out 80 then I'm getting 180ppg versus potentially whatever say a Ratougalea plus Titch go themselves. If Titch goes 110 then I need Rat to go 70, which I highly doubt he manages.

I'd sooner back Culley to go 80 than Rat to go 70.

Stewart averaged 84 in his last 6 games when teams really started putting work into limiting his impact. I think that will continue in 2023

Especially given that the top 4 most selected forwards right now are Dunkley (basically either flawless or a complete wreck on durability), Coniglio (never played a full season in 11 years), Taranto (same as Dunkley) and Rozee (by far the best of the group and still has two out of 4 seasons being bad). They're all great value, so worth taking it on, imo, but let's preempt any complaints when they inevitably get injured later this year!

The next most selected are Fyfe, Martin, Cunnington and Butters...
