QUESTION AND ANSWER TIME
(1) A FA or RFA player can be paid anywhere from 50% to 150% of their contracted salary in a given year. This needs to be set when they are acquired at auction, and can’t later be changed by their owner (only in a trade, via salary support being provided).
Once the salary structure of any player is set it cannot be changed for the duration of the contract. "Salary support" is the sum of the parts.
(2) If a player is on a back ended contract and they are delisted, their owner has to pay the difference between their salary in the remaining years, and the average that they were signed for. This represents a disincentive to back ending contracts - it basically reverses any benefit to having back ended in the first place because the surplus salary is payable anyway.
It is an incentive to ensure that teams research players before offering them contracts. In addition, it is in fairness to other teams. Paying only the difference between average salary and yearly salary is a discount given as SCSUL teams didn't make the decision. The player and/or AFL club did.
(3) There is no such adjustment applied when a player with a front ended contract is delisted. This is because the coach has already paid more than they would have paid with a normal contract that isn’t front ended.
Correct.
(4) Second contract players’ contracts can be front or back ended, but only in a set fashion. For a 5 year deal, for example, the options are 100%, 100%, 140%, 160%, 180%, or 180%, 160%, 140%, 100%, 100%. A three year deal would be 100%, 100%, 140% or 140%, 100%, 100%.
Correct.
(5) FA and RFA contract length and individual yearly salaries will be set in the days after the auction, but before the draft.
The contract length and average salary is set at auction. The yearly salaries are set in the days after the auction before the draft.
(6) Second contract extensions and individual yearly salaries (subject to the limits mentioned in (4) will be set in the days after the draft, but before the AFL season commences.
The 2nd contract length and yearly salary are set in the days after the auction before the draft. The exception being if a 2nd contract player is delisted by a team and subsequently drafted in the PSD. The team would then have 24 hours to enter those details.
