If he breaks into the side round one he's good enough to hang around.

Hard part is judging what Clarko thinks and will do. They've got several old guys that are best 22 but I'm not sure are in their best interests to actually play in Greenwood, Hall and Shiels especially. Those 3 playing or not playing really shapes their best 22.

Throw in Thomas, who is now back and was expected to play defense prior to all the douchebaggery getting exposed publicly and a few others.

Basically his scoring potential is some of the best but the JS is questionable and would be very much on an earn it basis. That said, most of the rookies this year have major issues in at least one of those areas, if not both, and the ones that don't cost a lot.

It's a tough rookie year, going to probably be about 5 120k guys going into 2 spots at both forwards and backs this year, always find that makes things more interesting as chances of nailing it are so low that it keeps teams different as the round 3 correction trades drift towards fixing rookies instead of ****genising all the premiums or mid price guys. Anyone who does nail the rookies is going to be a long way ahead.

This round will tell us a lot more I think as teams are narrowed down into best 26 types and we'll see more of which rookies are genuinely options.

It will be hard to get a line on Clarko and how he handles the Roos "rebuild". As good a coach as he is, he has not really been a fan of R1 and Rd 2 debuts for rookie players. This surprised me a little when I reviewed it recently given the last few years at Hawthorn should have been rebuilds. In the years 2015 to 2021 inclusive he only debuted 4 rookies in either Rds 1 or 2. And only one was really SC relevant and that was Kosi in 2021. The others were Brockman 11 games in 2021, T Miles 2017 and Pittonet 2016. Brockman was of little value in the first half of the season when you need cash cows because he played the first 4 games and then was not seen till Rd 17. Miles played 2 games then not seen till Rd 20. Pittonet (who only got a game as a late inclusion for Ceglar) played Rd 1 then not again till Rd 12.

That concerns me a little for guys like Sheezel and Drury and even Goater and Phillips. Sure he needs to get games into these guys to bring them on but coaches have habits like everyone else and he might just go back to the older guys. Either right from the start or worse after giving the younger guys a couple of games (and sucking you in) before dropping them.

If he's come in for Salem then I would think his JS shouldn't be too bad if he performs. Hibberd playing for their reserves side last weekend was a good sign.

Yes I agree he might adopt a "Lets start from scratch" philosophy with the Roos. That would be the hope. In 2021 he stated in an AFL interview that Hawthorn was treading water while in a rebuild but that it can turn around quickly.

I've had a look at the other half of the equation 2005 to 2008/2009 which would be more relevant. Never thought he was ever in a rebuilding phase after the 3peat.
