After five iterations (and counting), I'm happy with this field.

- Decided to flip Dawson for Docherty
- I'm confident in a Draper breakout this season, so I flipped English and added Marshall
- That allowed me to throw Himmelberg in the back line for the boost
- J. Cameron out, Oliver in for a boost in the midfield
- Yeo out back cause the man's gonna work a lot this season lol

Thoughts? Reckon I'm overextending on the rookie picks? View attachment 53546
That's one hell of a first post here and welcome.

It's different - not sure where to start. Maybe the bench. Do yourself a favor and when you trade, filter the player list by ownership and have a look at some of the most popular rookies, that's a good starting point to see who is likely to play. There's a few on the bench that won't get games.

I'm actually a little lost for words here, again I'd probably look at player ownership numbers and work from there.

Structure is also key. Look at some of the other teams here and you'll see most will have at least 4 quality midfielders, that's where you're pretty much going to get bulk points but it's a balance.

Ummm, not sure what else to say at this stage - Oh, Draper won't break out this year.

Welcome, and good on you for posting your team!

I feel that you are reaching for too many PODs. I love a POD, so whilst I think one or maybe two is worth a risk, too many will just lead to disaster.

If a popular player fails, you might get an advantage, but if he succeeds, you are behind. If a POD fails, you will be behind, but still have a chance of success. The opposite for both also applies. The more PODs you have, whilst you may succeed but the more chance you lose based on percentages .., a bit like the longer you play the poker machine, the more you play, the more chance you fall behind!

So this is a very interesting team. Not sure how long you've been playing Supercoach for, but here are a few tips that might help streamline your side.

Now, the first thing is to divide your players into the role they play in your team.

Firstly, you have the elite players (your guns). Their job is to score points. They usually cost upwards of $500k each. If you can find value here, all the better, but sometimes you'll spend extra to lock in a secure Captaincy option (think the most expensive player this year, Rory Laird). Ideally, these players are kept for the entire season, although injuries and other factors can affect that.

Secondly, you have your rookies (cash cows). These players roughly cost between $100-200k, and their job is to spend part of the season in your squad, accruing value as they outscore their very low initial priced to average, and you trade them out for a new rookie, and the generated funds are used to acquire new premiums throughout the season.

In between these players are the midpricers; they're generally SC no-mans land, where they'll neither score enough to be an outright gun, nor make as much cash. However, there's about a dozen or so exceptions every season.

So, what kind of players should you be looking for?

In Supercoach, not all playing positions are created equal. The most valuable positions are:

Inside Midfielder.
#1 Ruck (especially solo)
Half-Back flanker (especially when taking kick-ins)
7th defender (especially if they're both a good interceptor and their team funnels the ball through them).

Positions to avoid:

Any Key Position Player.
Forward and Back Pocket
Pure Wing roles.

When picking guns, this is generally advice that gives a baseline, however with rookies, the restrictions can be lifted (though rookies with better roles would have an easier time scoring), but more importantly, a more crucial factor is Job Security. A rookie can't make money if they're not playing.

So, guns score the points, rookies make the cash to earn more guns, and midpricers do a little of both.

So let's go through your team:

Docherty, Ridley, Yeo, Crozier and McKenna are solid picks.

Himmelberg could have been an excellent pick, however, he's been touted to be playing in the forward line, which is far less lucrative for point scoring.

Vlastuin and Frampton I literally have no idea on. Vlastuin might work depending on if he has the lion's share of distribution duties in Richmond's backline.

Your midfield is a little too shallow. Take Himmelberg and Frampton out of defence, put Constable and Ginbey into defence, opening up two midfield spots. Take Hobbs out of your forward line, and put Fyfe there instead. Pick Jacob Hopper in your midfield. You should have 2 spots open. Pick another gun to assist Oliver - my personal choice would be Bontempelli, which leaves about $250k to spend.

You could either buy another cheaper midpricer to act as a cash cow (popular options would be Callaghan or Flanders), or invest in turning Draper into a more established ruck.

Last thing, turn Wardlaw and Cadman into Oscar Baker and Fergus Greene. This will give you another $160k to play around with.

Appreciate the welcome from you all, glad I caught some forum vets somewhat by surprise with a couple of head-scratcher picks. Admittedly Cadman, Howes and Wardlaw were some "sleeper" POD bench picks sponsored by Jock Reynolds, Sporting News Aus and Honeyball. You're right in that I didn't take ownership% into consideration as much as most of you here.

Greatly appreciate the write up Eagling, likewise Vicwood. I haven't managed a Supercoach team in over 10 years, but have mostly kept up with the league, so the tips help out a lot.

You've all got me second guessing Vlastuin - I believe Tigger will trend upwards this year. I was actually torn between him and Rioli based on one; price, two; his durability, and three; the idea that our backline should be applying more pressure keeping the ball up front for Lynch, Bolton, Riewoldt, Dusty and the rest of the frontend - hence more disposals. Or.. maybe I just wanted more yellow and black.. haha

I was most concerned about my midfield, glad you called it out for what it was.

I've made some changes based on everyone's advice (attached screenshot of both teams below, new and old respectively):
- FWD: Hobbs out. Fyfe shifted over. Hopeful for King to play next week, will keep a close eye. Cadman dropped for Greene.
- DEF: Gonna stack on Saad in replacement of Vlastuin/Rioli, there's going to be a lot of action in Carlton's back-half. Crozier and McKenna to start. Ginbey benched but I believe in that single anonymous Rising Star-to be vote he got.
- MID: Bont and Hopper in, I'm sorta embarrassed I didn't have the latter in already lol.
- RUC: Zilch. I'm doubling down on Draper. Unlike you lot, I haven't lived the underwhelming experience, and I'm a glutton for punishment in fantasy/supercoach. Love a good risk, evidently. :p

I've now managed to bank just under $200K at the cost of 8 less round one projected points, despite how insignificant that measure can be. Let me know what you guys think, should I make use of all this spare coin?

Happy with where I’m at, barring rd 1 rookie selections. Any advice welcome, especially if anyone can figure out how to get Hopper into my team! View attachment 53502 View attachment 53503
It’s much easier if you just put Hopper in your in team and never remove him. You’ve got no cash left in your rookies so unless you’re willing to run Davey on field for Bruhn switch - (don’t do this) then you need to move from 12 to 11 premos or downgrade a premo selection by 70+ to send Callaghan up. That move is Dawson/Stewart to your favorite value pick back. Or all the way down to Bowes if you go 11 premos and just upgrade Davey to Hopper.

looks like a team after the unofficial practice matches! I like that you can just see who breaks first second and third in the ruck line and jump on the only surviving option. I do think the risk though of one getting away is significant. Want those defence premos to score comparably. Good luck. PS love it, do it.

I've ended up at a point where I kind of comfortable with the this team, except for Bowes - if there was a decent swap for Bowes+Macrae to faux premium+premium I'd probably take it.

Just generally curious about anyone else's opinion on it.
solid set with $ in r3 nice, $ in F7 a bit more sketchy, consider moving those $ on field.

This is where I've landed at the moment. I've been considering the idea of Ziebell down to Fyfe in order to get one of the 123k bench rookies up to Phillips. Also toyed with the idea of switching Laird & McKenna to Dawson & Flanders but still leaning option 1 at the moment. Would be keen to hear people's thoughts...

That's a really good team - I was just telling someone on another page I was concerned seeing Bruhn at F6 but I'll eat my words. Really like it.

I can't see much improvement on the below. Have tried a couple POD's in Setterfield and Ziebell. Really concerned about them though. Any thoughts would be most welcome :)

I think you're too lean in Defense and too heavy in the Mids. There are going to be some good scoring mid price mids this year IMO, and one of those Premium Mids could be moved to a Defender.

Too excessive in the forwards?

If it wasn't for the fact I think we'll get some good DPP forward options throughout the season (Gawn, Grundy, B.Smith in particular) I might actually be tempted to run with a team like this. Increased trades make sideways trading premiums less of an issue though so it still could work.
